Museum of Moroccan Arts (formerly the Museum of Oudayas)

Enjoy the kasbah to its fullest

The old Museum of Oudayas recently changed its name to the Museum of Moroccan Arts, but in any case, the hotel you’re staying at will surely be able to tell you how to get there. Located within the Kasbah of Oudayas and regarded as one of the ethnographic highlights of Rabat, its exhibitions exude with history and beauty, and document everything from Prehistoric times to the Islamic era. Particularly worth mentioning are the rooms dedicated to Arabic musical instruments, the utensils used in preparing typical Moroccan cuisine, and the furniture of traditional houses, not to mention the range of ornaments on display. Equally as impressive are its collections of typical dress and elaborate carpets, making you want to rush out into the street to find an artisan who can recreate this age-old technique of rug-making. Indeed, one of the things you’ll pick up at this museum is how to distinguish between the Berber rugs – with their oriental influences – and the wool Maghrebi creations inspired by geometric patterns.
