Cobbled streets, regional architecture, 80 inhabitants, delicious local dishes... Shall we take a look?
A Cantabrian testimony.
This little village is one of the most beautiful and historic places in the region of Cantabria. With only 80 inhabitants for the last decades, Barcena Mayor has become one of Cantabria’s greatest testimonies, so much so that it was declared an Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1979. Its cobblestone alleyways have now been pedestrianised and offer a truly local and regional journey. The ‘montañesa’ architecture is typical to Santander (it must be remembered that the region has always revolved around the Mountain). This village is located at the heart of Reserva del Saja, where traditional stews, venison and local desserts are made in a unique way. You can also go up to the village of Los Tojos (just a few kilometers away), which offers stunning views of a large part of the region.
