Although it is not as important as the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, this monastery is of great importance to the Catholic religion.
A journey through Liébana, a region of Cantabria.
Along with Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de la Compostela and Caravaca de la Cruz, Santo Toribio de Liebana is the world’s fifth unique sacred Catholic monastery, as the remains of Jesus Christ’s cross are found here. Its Confessional is open to the public at the beginning of the Lebaniego Jubilee Year, when believers from all over the world gather here to be pardoned for their sins. Although this cathedral is less popular than that of Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio Monastery, located in the municipality of Camaleño, is the end destination of the ‘Camino Lebaniego’ (Lebaniego Pilgrimage), which has increased in popularity in the past few years. The whole region of Liebana is also one of the province’s most important attractions, as it is home to the Picos de Europa.
