César Manrique Foundation

The epicentre of Lanzarote's most famous figure

César Manrique (1919-92) was an environmentally minded architect and artist who before his death in a car crash had become Lanzarote's best known figure of modern times. He used his vision of art and nature as two very complementary forces, in creating many Lanzarote landmarks, and also influenced tourism development on the island in a more sustainable, lower impact direction. The Fundación Manrique promotes his legacy and preserves and operates his home/studio at Taro de Tahíche as a museum. Just north of Arrecife, it was built on lava rock in the 1960s and includes a gallery of work by Manrique and other artists including Picasso and Miró.
