International Museum of Contemporary Art

Another old castle turned new museum

Another of this island's old defensive fortresses, the 18th-century Castillo de San José, like others of its ilk, was turned into a museum, in this case the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo (MIAC), established in 1976 by - you guessed it - artist/architect César Manrique. The draughty old spaces were modernised and adapted with an eye toward emphasising both art and nature - and it's a fascinating experience from an architectural and design standpoint as well as artistically. The collection stars the likes of Francis Bacon, Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tápies, Julio Le Park, and Antonio López, to name just several. It's open daily 10 am to 8 pm, and you can also grab a bite at an extraordinary on-premises restaurant with lovely ocean views.
