Las Coloradas Castle

Small but doughty

The southern municipality of Yaiza was another coastal area of Lanzarote that for many years suffered mightily from pirate raids, and so the Castillo de las Coloradas (aka Castillo de las Águilas) was built circa 1740. It's the smallest of Lanzarote's defensive fortifications, meant for defensive purposes and to monitor naval traffic in the Bocaina Strait. Circular in form, it's built in masonry, wood, and lime; and surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. It wasn't large enough to shelter nearby residents, but only a military detachment along with installations like a pair of cannons, a powder magazine, a brig, and a well. The inside is not currently open to visitors, but this is under active consideration as of this writing.
