Churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo
Two historic landmarks to admire in a natural setting very close to the city.
Two monuments on Naranco Hill.
Less than three kilometres (2 miles) from Oviedo, this imposing pre-Romanesque structure on Mount Naranco does not look like your typical church, as it was originally the private residence of King Ramiro I. All the monuments and churches in the area exude history from every pore. It suffered various changes during the Gothic era, which were fortunately removed at the beginning of the twentieth century to recover its previous appearance. The upper floor offers entrancing vistas of the surrounding green mountains, while on the lower floor you'll find a totally windowless crypt. Very close by you'll find the Church of San Miguel de Lillo, which despite being but a fragment of its original self, still transports you to medieval Asturias.
