Either for an initial overview of Bordeaux or especially if you have just a short amount of time in town, the best way to orient yourself is to hop on the red doubledecker buses of Visiotour which depart daily from Place des Quinconces at 11am, 1:45pm, 3:30pm, and 5:15pm. It's a brisk 70-minute tour of the city's highlights, with the best views of its top monuments along both sides of the river (from four metres/13 feet up, if you're on the top level). In addition in July and August there's a special Friday-night bus tour so you can soak in some of that cosmopolitan nocturnal illumination.
