Torralba d'en Salord Neolithic Site

Another 3,000-year-old jawdropper

Together with nearby Torre d'en Galmés, Minorca's second largest Iron Age town (500 inhabitants) is the Balearic Islands' most important prehistoric site, dating back to around 1000 BC. Interestingly, Torralba d'en Salord continued to be occupied during the Roman occupation and, indeed, into the Middle Ages. The settlement is also home to Minorca's most popular Neolithic structure, a taula (a vertical pillar topped with a massive horizontal stone and usually surrounded by a u-shaped wall) some five metres (16 feet) high. In the process of excavation and reconstruction, remnants were found of celebrations and ceremonies, leading archaeologists to believe this was also a site of sacred significance.
