Day trip to Colonia del Sacramento
Between Montevideo and Buenos Aires, this world renowned treasure is waiting to be discovered.
Half way between Montevideo and Buenos Aires you'll find this pretty, picturesque hideaway which is one of the most famous parts of the country. Colonia del Sacramento is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but a place where time seems to stand still, offering visitors a never-ending chance to enjoy its unique charm. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese, it was the first European settlement in Uruguay. The influence of these first settlers can still be seen today in the churches with tiled facades, craft shops and a museum called the Museo Portugués. Step into the historical quarter of Colonia and you'll enter a world of shady squares and narrow cobbled streets like the picturesque and poetic calle de los Suspiros or street of whispers, a real treat to behold. The beauty of places such as the Paseo de San Gabriel, the Puerto Viejo, the Plaza Mayor 25 de Mayo or the leafy Plaza de Armas will make this a trip to remember. It is around 180 kilometres from the capital.
