Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations
Inaugurated in summer 2013, it's highly acclaimed for its interdisciplinary, international approach.
A fascinating new museum.
Within three months, the latest jewel in Marseille's museums crown, 5,700 square metres next to the seafront Fort de St. Jean, had already become one of the world's 50 most visited museums. Conceived as a kind of independent mini-city, MuCEM aims to distill the essence of Mediterranean civilisation through its art history, archaeology, and anthropology. Besides its permanent collection, there is a busy schedule of fascinating temporary exhibitions, conferences, and documentary films. It's open daily except Tuesday from 11am to 6pm; access to the grounds is free and to the interior collection is 8 euros.
