Malvarrosa Beach

Valencia's top strand

There are quite a few beaches lining the Valencia shore, but perhaps the best known and most popular with both locals and visitors is Platja de la Malvarrosa, a strand more than 1,000 metres (more than a half mile) long. Back in the day, much of this area was a hollyhock (malvarrosa) plantation established by Félix Robillard, the 19th-century head gardener of the city's botanical garden. But since the beachfront boulevard, the Passeig Marítim, was given a makeover in the 1980s, this zone has blossomed into one of the city's top leisure magnets, with numerous restaurants, cafés, and chiringuitos (beach kiosks) to keep beachgoers fed and watered during the day and partiers entertained after dark.
