Valencia's waterfront promenade

By the sea, by the beautiful sea

Valencia is of course a city formed and informed by the Mediterranean Sea, and it's here on the Passeig Marítim (Spanish Paseo Marítimo, English Maritime Promenade) that its maritime side can be most fully experienced. It's a lovely, open-feeling area where you can stroll, bike (there's a dedicated lane), and check out the various sculptures and landmarks along the way. At one end, the Playa de la Malvarrosa is a particularly lively area of restaurants, bars, and nightspots, with its roots in a plantation of hollyhocks (malvarrosas) founded by botanist Félix Robillard, the mid-19th-century head of the city's botanical garden.
