Our Lady of Grace Cathedral

A unique slice of Nicaraguan architecture

Our Lady of Grace Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Central America, and the historic and cultural heart of León. Its eclectic style – a mix of Colonial Baroque and Neoclassicism – makes it a unique slice of history and religious architecture, and one of Nicaragua's most iconic monuments. Construction began in 1747, based on a design by Guatemalan architect Diego José de Porres y Esquivel. Consecrated in 1860, its majesty, both external and internal, gains an even greater appreciation upon learning that it is built on an area known for seismic tremors. Its crypts house the remains of Nicaragua's most famous international export, Rubén Darío, the father of Modernism. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2011.
