Official ceremonies, tributes, a military parade - welcome to September 17 in Melilla.
A celebration of the founding of Spanish Melilla.
September 17 is a festive occasion in Melilla, commemorating the date in 1497 when its capture by Spanish troops made it part of Spain. Official ceremonies include the Tribute to the Flag, held in Pedro de Estopiñán Square, named for the general considered the city's founder and graced with a statue of him. Another important part of the day is the big armed forces parade, attended by multitudes of locals and visitors who show up streetside early in the morning to be sure to get the best viewing spots.
