Boat rides in Xochimilco, a borough declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco (pa. 109)
A ride in the trajineras boats to the sound of Xochimilco marimbas is a must for any tourist.
"The flower place"
Testimony of the advanced level reached by the Aztec civilisation are the ancient channels of this southern area of Mexico City, Xochimilco, a name that means "the flower place" in the Nahuatl language. Nowadays, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco for its ecological, cultural and historical value, it has become an essential visit for tourists and locals alike who, without leaving Mexico, can have a Venice-like experience. And it's all thanks to the trajineras (boats), in which the visitor can enjoy a pleasant water ride, more often than not with the company of musicians who will adapt to the client's taste: from rancheras to the soothing sound of harp or marimba (percussion instrument) for romantic rides. Still in the same borough, but away from the water, you will find the "Bosque de Nativitas", an area with tables and barbecues, as well as a number of street stalls selling traditional food. Another place worth visiting is the Parque Ecológico de Xochimilco and, while you're in the neighbourhood, take a look at the San Bernardino church.
