Algerian currency, haggling and other tricks

Self help tips

As we know that you are going to go shopping when you visit Oran, pay special attention to this really useful advice. Firstly, the country’s official currency is the Algerian Dinar, which replaced the French Franc which was in use until 1964; the Dinar is divided into 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 santeems and, although it may seem trivial, it is important to know this when dealing with change. It is most likely that the majority of your purchases in Oran will be made at stalls, markets and street fairs, and in these places everybody haggles. Secondly, in restaurants and other businesses it is customary to leave a tip, and usually amounts are rounded up as a way of doing this, in contrast to other places where a percentage is calculated.
