Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption
This is a must-visit, not just for its architecture, but also for its history. If only the walls could talk!
Two in one!
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption is located at the end of the Pereda Gardens, next to the present-day Post building, in front of Porticada Square. It is unusual in that it is two churches in one. These two churches are superimposed and tell a large part of the city’s history. The Church of the Christ is located on the lower part and was built during the 13th century. The other, located in the part directly above, used to be the Abbey of Saint Emeterio and Saint Celedonio. However, it had to be restored, as it fell victim to an historic fire in 1941, which devastated Santander’s Old Town and destroyed part of the Cathedral’s structure. This event affected the city so greatly, that places like this cathedral are vital in the retracing of Santander’s history.
