Chapel of the Virgin of the Sea
Its design is nothing spectacular, but the area in which it stands is film-worthy. This is where its real importance lies!
At the foot of the cannon.
Named after the city’s Patron Saint, the chapel is located on the Virgin of the Sea Island and has been withstanding the force of the waters for many centuries. Its origins are vague, as some think that the first building could date back to the 13th century, but nobody can be sure, as it has to be reconstructed on several occasions. The never-ending seasons have decimated this building, but you can still visit it. The architecture itself may not be spectacular, but its surroundings are out of this world. From this little peninsula, you will be able to see all the city’s outskirts, the beach and the cliffs. We recommend a stroll across the fields (called ‘praos’ here) that surround the chapel, and take in the views of Cabo Mayor all the way to the open sea. This is Santander.
