Although you're in the La Latina neighbourhood, it is not too well trodden by tourists. Experience the real Madrid!
Madrid de los Austrias.
It is one of the most charming spots in Madrid de los Austrias. You'll be blown away by its monumental gate and its traditional pipeclay floor, that is very hard to come by now in Madrid. Although you're in the La Latina neighbourhood, it is not too well trodden by tourists. It will be much quieter here. During the centuries XIII ans XIV it was the city's commercial axis and now is its packed with restaurants and lovely cafés where you can enjoy a sunny afternoon. One of the most attention-grabbing buildings is the Casa del Obispo, dating back to the sixteenth century, that is found adjacent to San Andrés Church. The rotund Palacio de los Vargas maintains the same architectural style. The square is sloping and simple but it could not be more effective. A secret awaits at its lower part: the garden, the Jardín del Príncipe de Anglona, a well-kept secret even for many locals. This little 500 square metre haven of peace was built in the eighteenth century and belonged to the palace to which it is attached. Today it is a public space and is almost always empty, so its a great place to rest and clear your head. Walk through its little labyrinth and sit on its benches with a good book. Not even a trace of the action of the city.
