More information from Paris
The City of Lights is, for many, the most beautiful city in the world. This comes as no surprise, as, in spite of being the capital of a country that finished off its monarchy with the slash of a guillotine, Paris owes much of its splendour and magnificence to the Bourbons. Many of its most emblematic monuments, squares and Parisian gardens are closely linked to the monarchy, and you too can visit them with one of our cheap flights to Paris.
The Louvre Museum, the old Royal Palace, the Garden of Tuileries, Vosges Square in the Marais district (the old Jewish quarter, now the gay district par excellence) and the enormous Versailles Palace (in the adjoining district of the same name) are just a few prime examples of this. Without a doubt, it was Napoleon who made this city what it is today. During his regime, he built wide avenues, such as Rue de Rivoli and modern buildings, such as the Garnier Opera House. The Byzantine Sacré Cœur basilica, located on top of the Montmartre hill, is a must-see. On the way, don’t miss a stroll through the alleyways of the bohemian Montmartre neighbourhood, which served as a meeting point for painters and writers in the 19th Century. Marvel at the setting of one of the world’s most famous pieces of literature, the Notre Dame de Paris, written by Victor Hugo. This is a prime example of Gothic architecture. Just a few metres away, on the left bank (‘Rive Gauche’), is the Saint-Michel neighbourhood, also known as the ‘Latin Quarter’. This area boasts lively nightlife, and is home to the Sorbonne University and the Pantheon.
Relax for a while in the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens, then head to the Grand and Petit Palais palaces, go shopping on the Champs Elysées, stroll along the Banks of the Seine, visit the Orsay and Orangerie (for lovers of Impressionism) museums, and don’t miss out on a trip to the Eiffel Tower. This 330 metre tall monument (made with two and a half million nuts and bolts!) offers the most beautiful and impressive views of the city.
