Shrine of Our Lady of Carmen (Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Carmen)
You will recognize this instantly: It is the only monument in the area that radiates light and colour!
A rainbow of colours.
This site gives a touch of colour to the city's old town. It is without doubt a much-appreciated contrast with the sober colonial style streets that La Candelaria comprises. Both its exterior and its interior provide an unmissable visit even though it is a hidden treasure. This national monument is also the city's youngest: it was completed in 1938 when it replaced the Church of Carmen that stood there previously. You can get there from the Plaza Bolivar. Go down Carrera 7ª to see the Senate or the Presidential Palace (Palacio de Nariño) and then take Calle 8 towards the west. You will recognize it as soon as you see it. Its gothic and slightly Arabic facade coupled with its red and cream colouring make it truly unique. Even so, when you arrive you might need some space on the street in order to appreciate its frontage.
