If you want a taste of the student experience of a lifetime, don’t miss out on a stroll around this iconic university.
A temple of knowledge (and good fun)
This is one of the most prestigious universities in the world and one of the oldest in the country. Founded in 1636, it has a highly cosmopolitan campus, welcoming over 30,000 students from 80 different countries every year. The legendary Harvard Square newsstands, called Out of Town News, are amongst the university’s most popular attractions and its world-renowned museums are also not to be missed (for more information, see the Museums section of this guide). Harvard College, as the whole site is known, extends for around 220 acres along the banks of the River Charles. It includes some 400 buildings and various residential areas for students. Its library, with over 15 million items, is the largest in the entire country. From Boston, it is around 8 miles (13 kilometres) to Cambridge, where the university can be found.
