The José Martí monument
It's no coincidence that one of the most majestic monuments on the island is dedicated to one of its most revered heroes.
Centrally located and colossal.
"José Julián Martí Pérez was the most important politician and ideologue in Cuban history. Creator of the Cuban Revolutionary Party, he was the promoter of the so-called Necessary War or War of 1895, which defined the revolutionary political ideals of the island. A monument was erected to this Cuban national hero in the central Plaza de la Revolucion, a colossal construction 456 feet high visible from much of the city. Built during 1958, it shows the contemporary history of Cuba. On the ground floor the main precepts of the ideology of Martí are written, and we recommend that you make a point of reading it, as it describes a fundamental part of the history of the fifteenth and sixteenth century on the island and in the world. By the way, in the same place there is a observation deck no less than 423 feet up, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city".
