Home base for Lyon's culture
Of the many, many distinguished fine arts museums throughout France, Lyon's very centrally located Musée de Beaux-Arts is the finest outside the Louvre in Paris. This lavishly financed, enormous institution (70 halls covering more than 14,500 square metres/3½ acres) holds displays more than 1,000 statues dating back to the 15th century as well as a treasure trove of largely European paintings back to the 14th (among them Tintoretto's celebrated Danae, and other masterpieces by the likes of Monet, Gauguin, Dürer, and Picasso; rounding it all out are impressive collections of coins, medallions, and stamps. The ancient cultures of Greece, Rome, and Egypt are well represented, too (a particular treat is the sarcophagus of the Pharoah Isetemkheb). Its impact of on local culture is of course incalculable
