Revolution Square

The symbolic centre of Managua

Located in the historic heart of the capital, alongside the boardwalk, Revolution Square is the symbolic centre of Managua. Formerly the Plaza de Armas, this was the spot where revolutionary fighters took up arms to establish democracy, and today houses the National Palace of Culture and the Old Cathedral buildings, which represent political and religious power. The palace was constructed in 1940, and is regarded as one of the country's most notable examples of Neoclassical architecture. The Old Cathedral, designed by Pablo Dambach and finished in 1938, is found opposite. This also emphasises its Neoclassical markings. The earthquake of 1972 damaged the Nicaraguan capital's iconic structures, but this square remains a symbol of power.
