Koutoubia Mosque

The most representative building of Almohad art

The architectural legacy of the Almohads is no better reflected that in this mosque. Its minaret is what dominates your view when you see Marrakesh from a distance for the first time. It is one of the oldest monuments of classical Moroccan architecture and the city's highest. Its construction dates back to the 12th century. It gains its charm from the fact that each façade and arch is different. And yes, its entrance is prohibited for non-Muslims. However, everyone can stroll through its surrounding gardens which are freely accessible. It is open 24 hours a day. In this natural space you will also find the remains of an Almoravid palace and the excavations of another ancient mosque that was demolished as it was not correctly aligned with Mecca.
