The comparisons are tedious, but to compare this cave painting work of art to the Sistine Chapel is a true compliment!

The ancient Sistine Chapel?

Those that refer to the Altamira Caves as the cave-painting version of the Sistine Chapel are not exaggerating. These caves and their prehistoric paintings dating back to the Paleolithic era are some of the world’s greatest testimonies to human art. Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola’s chance meeting with a hunter in the mountains that surround Santillana del Mar triggered the investigation into these caves. From then on, worldwide interest in this area increased, so much so that in 1985, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, due to the deteriotation that the vast amounts of visitiors caused, the caves had to be closed to the public. Nonetheless, they have constructed a true-to-life replica next to them, which you can still visit.
