La Magdalena Peninsula

Royal love for Santander.

This small seaside town was in full swing in the first decade of the 20th century, and used to be the summer home of King Alfonso XIII. The monarch and his family were particularly enamoured with this part of the capital and began building Magdalena Palace in 1909, which was to be the royal family’s summer residence. This was the case up until the beginning of the Second Republic. Afterwards, this peninsula was made into a public park for the city, and is now one of the most charming places in Santander. This area has a lot to offer, including Magdalena Beach, the enormous park that surrounds it, the palace itself and the zoo in its suburbs, where you can see sea lions, penguins and replicas of Columbus’ ships: la Niña, la Pinta and Santamaría. This truly is one of Santander’s treasures.
