Whatever time of year, a visit to Pombo Square will immerse you in its long history and its endless charm.
Instead of recommending a specific shop, shopping street or market, we suggest a shopping spree at Pombo Square, which is one of the most charming and historic squares in Santander. Although it’s hard to believe, this space had to be reclaimed from the sea, as the port once stretched to Cañadío Square and boats were actually docked here (which is why the surrounding streets are called ‘cuestas’, meaning slopes). When the square was built, it became the commercial centre for the entire city. Although there are no fixed stalls, this square hosts all kinds of markets, such as the Book Festival, depending on the day and time of year. We highly recommend a visit here, and if you are lucky enough to be visiting during the ‘Big Week’ (around the 25th of July), sample some of the delicious festival tapas that are sold at the food stands.
