The chocolate that we know nowadays has a Swiss origin.
The great sugary pleasure
The story has it that the famous Swiss chocolate tradition began right here in Zurich: it's said that it was here in 1697 when the city mayor, Heinrich Escher, came across chocolate on a visit to Brussels and introduced it to the country, but it was exclusively reserved for the wealthier classes during that period. Incidentally, chocolate was rejected by Swiss society until around the beginning of the 19th century when it was attributed to possessing aphrodisiac properties. Although the origin of this food substance was found elsewhere, it was the Swiss production that gave chocolate its worldwide prestige. The first step occurred in 1850 when Charles Amédée Kohler produced the first chocolate varieties, and then of course when Rudolph Lindt produced his first chocolate in 1879, just like we enjoy nowadays. The Lindt & Sprungli Chocolate Factory Shop is open to visitors on a street known as Seestrasse.
