Conventico Caves

A curious place of refuge in times of attack.

Located in the City Wall of the Cross next to the Church of the Conception, these curious caves were for years among the most important places in Melilla not just for their storage capacity but because they served as shelter for residents when the city came under attack from the Moroccans. During these periods, it was commonplace to celebrate religious services and other public acts in these caves. They consist of three levels and date from the beginning of the 18th century. And through the centuries they remained in such good condition that entire families lived down here. Nowadays they have been restored, have added multimedia exhibits about their history, and are open to the public for free visits.
