Museum of Military History

An old munitions warehouse, now a museum.

A section of the city's 16th-century stone ramparts where guns and gunpowder were once stored, was turned in 1997 into a military history museum with a grant from the Army Museum in Madrid to mark Melilla's 500th anniversary as a Spanish city. So the Bastion of the Most Pure Conception was reconditioned and divided into two grand halls filled with all manner of martial material, both historic and contemporary, and more general historic documents and maps relating to the city. Among the more than 500 items, undoubtedly the most eye-catching is the scale model of the Plaza de Melilla, ordered built by King Ferdinand VII in the early 19th century. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday.
