Walking isn't the only interesting way to tour the city, as both tram and bicycle are good modes of transport in Frankfurt.
Alternatives for touring Frankfurt.

Up the Main River, down the Rhine River.
A lovely and different way to get to know Frankfurt is to take one of these boats for touring the Main River from top to bottom. The city basically extends along the river banks, so this is a perfect way to keep your bearings and to get to know the city. The boats leave from the port of 'Eisernen Steg' and you can choose the route that you'd like to take from there. The first of these routes will take you in the direction of 'Griesheim', which is one of the economic lungs of the city, and up to the historical port of 'Westhafen'. The other option is to sail in the opposite direction until the Eastern port of the city and the area of 'Gernermühle'. Another option is to disembark at this point and go through the city from here. At number 1 on a street named 'Bernard-Grzimek Alle', you'll find Frankfurt Zoo. We recommend to come walking, since the zoo is just is a little outside the centre, but close enough to be reached on foot. You'll recognize it when you see the gigantic, golden-coloured central building and the enormous fountain that stands before the zoo. This gigantic estate with an area of nearly 14 hectares keeps a great variety of animal and vegetable species, which have been imported from all continents. In fact, certain ecosystems have been managed to be created, which make it the perfect place to keep the species that are in danger of extinction. One of the most popular attractions of this zoo is what's called 'Grzimek Haus'. In this enormous section of the park, a display of artificial lighting has been created to simulate nocturnal atmospheres. This way the visitor can observe purely nocturnal animal species which otherwise could not be seen.

A charming little village.
If you're thinking of going on an excursion to the outskirts of the city, don't hesitate because 'Heidelberg' is your destination. This little village, which is located around 70 kilometres from the city, is one of the most charming places in Germany. On the banks of the River Neckar, this old and small village is famous for its old quarter and the castle which crowns this area. This is Heidelberg Castle which has been there since the 13th century at least (although it's not known when it was built exactly). As well as this, you'll find Germany's oldest university in this pastoral location which is located in a secluded spot on the mountain. By the way, the old centre of the village enjoys a great atmosphere at night, especially during the summer with numerous taverns and terraces, where you can taste the town's local beer. In fact, many festivals are organized during the summer season which give this place an even better atmosphere.
Taunus
Besides the mountains, you'll also come across the famous geothermal springs between Frankfurt and Taunus that are well worth this tour!

The Tanus mountain range is one of the mountainous areas that surround the city of Frankfurt. The origins of civilizations were found here on these mountains which settled on what is presently the city of today. On the route that joins Frankfurt with Taunus, you'll find a few of the famous geothermal springs such as 'Wiesbaden' or 'Bad Homburg'. Within its enormous parks, you'll come across several circuits of natural thermal waters that have been around here for thousands of years. The town of 'Königstein' is waiting for you to pass the excursion's finish line. This town is one of the oldest enclaves of the region and as you walk and lose yourself among its stone narrow streets, you can observe the typically famous German houses with their gable roofs, balconies and their wooden and stone walls. The real adventurers can continue up to 'Grosser Feldberg', which is the highest peak in this area with a height of 881 metres.
The Palm Garden
This botanical garden is always popular and it features a really captivating corner of palm trees. A real must-visit.

Located very near to the park of 'Grüneburg', you'll find the Palm Garden. With its symbolic name, one of the most important botanical gardens is presented in the city. Opened in 1870, the Palm Garden has been growing throughout the years and it currently has an area of more than 20 hectares with countless vegetal collections. It's rather odd for a botanical garden to attract so much attention in a city, but this place has been one of the most visited and busiest places for many years. Perhaps this is due to the fact that there have been numerous acts of publicity since it opened, or maybe this was because the city itself was in charge of its management since 1901. Even the famous American celebrity 'Buffalo Bill' brought his show to this park. Now you can visit its famous 'Rosaleda', and its 'Rhododendrumgarten' with its plants imported from Asia and North America, but you particularly have to visit the 'Palmenhaus', which is the place where you'll find palm trees from all over the world. This place is a whole experience.
Europaturm
Its 337 metres in height guarantee it as one of the tallest towers in the world and logically its panoramic views are spectacular.
The asparagus of 'Ginnheim'.
The 'Europaturm' is also known as 'Ginnemer Spaschel' or the asparagus of 'Ginnheim', in reference to its neighbouring district. Designed by the architect Erwin Heinle and built in 1974, this tower took almost five years to complete. Its 337 and a half metres have made it the tallest tower in the region and one of the tallest in the world. The 'Europaturm' rapidly became one of the symbols of the city. Perhaps the restaurant and disco which were opened inside the building helped to increase its popularity. It wasn't only a milestone in the field of telecommunications, thousands of people came here for lunch, dinner, or to have a drink with such wonderful views. Unfortunately, these establishments have remained closed for many years now. Nevertheless, one of the perfect spots to observe the entire the city from a height is located in the district of 'Bockenheim'.
Hauptwache
Nowadays, it's an eye-catching baroque pile with an adjoining café. In the past, it was a passenger station and a police station with its own jail.
A special building.
This is one of the most special buildings in the whole city. If you come across this building, it surely won't leave you feeling indifferent. It's about a peculiar baroque construction built in 1730 that used to serve as a passenger station and a jail, since this building was an old police station. It was precisely due to this peculiar symbolism that this building was a victim of a revolutionary attack in 1833 by revolutionary democrats. It was taken and partially destroyed but soon after, it was reconstructed to show its peculiar facade again, which could be one of the nicest and most original that you'll ever see. Nowadays, 'Hauptwache' has turned into a café with a very nice terrace that's highly recommended and especially during summer. It's located in the 'An der Hauptwache' plaza and it's the perfect place to rest a while and to watch the coming and going of people on the street.

Its location necessarily connects it to the church of San Pablo. Both have experienced key moments in Frankfort's history.
Remarkable square.
This square is one of the most important and symbolic of the city. Located at the foot of the church from which it receives its name, the Protestant church of San Pablo. This place was the scene of one of the most special historical moments in Frankfurt. And it is that this church was named Parliament of the city during the years 1848 and 1849. In the church and in the square the decisions of a city were made that, like a good handful of cities in the country and the continent, faced in that year to what is known as the spring of revolutions. In 1903, the monument to unity was erected in the middle of the square, symbolizing the new spirit of the city and how its neighbors wanted to bury the conflicts without forgetting the past. The English Theatre
This initiative of importing English theatre arose in 1979. It was a success and it still continues to be successful: the tickets nearly always sell out!

In 1979, a group of actors came from the United States, England and South Africa to carry out a peculiar initiative, which was to create a theatre in order to bring the most important works in the English language. With such a crazy idea, they began a project which gradually became one of the greatest in the city and although the theatre had to change its premises and its name several times, it currently occupies an impressive building at number 7 on a street named 'Gallusanlage', and the spectators are delighted to sell out the tickets, week after week. Naturally, the key principle of this theatre is to bring the adaptations of works in the English language. This explains why its programme is eclectic, bringing classic and modern works to the boards which range from musicals to other forms of theatre.

Frankfurt's Most Emblematic Bar.
One of the most vintage and classy bars in Frankfurt is hidden on the ground floor of the hotel 'Hessischer Hof', which is located on the street named 'Friedrich Ebert Anlage'. As if it was kept as a secret, this curious piano bar named Jimmy's opened many decades ago. The bar's covered and classic-style walls could tell stories of the nights out that many of the city's artists have had in this establishment. Jimmy's was also the chosen place for long social gatherings of many of the intellectuals in the region. Perhaps this was due to the wonderful menu and their exquisitely prepared cocktails, or maybe the fabulous music coming from the bar's piano. Whatever the case may be, this bar is one of the great examples in Frankfurt. But it's their cigarette and cigar menu that makes this bar even more special. If you're a smoker, you'll want to make the most of your visit to try their products. Incidentally, you should also know that they even have their own brand of tobacco.
Financial Frankfurt
Both the European Central Bank and the Frankfurt Skyline provide the city with an important financial contribution.
Heavy weights.
Frankfurt is one of the cities which has the largest financial activity in the whole country. Although it's not a large city, it possesses a heart of enterprise and commerce which comprises the engine of the region. Many of these financial buildings can be visited and the first thing that you should be aware of is that the headquarters of the European Central Bank is located here. You'll find it at number 29 on the street named 'Kaiserstrasse', and this building is open to visitors. The Frankfurt skyline also welcomes visitors. Long live the good weather!
Perhaps the reason why Germans celebrate the arrival of spring and summer with passion could be due to the fact that they have really cold winters. In fact, it could almost be said that only two seasons exist in Frankfurt: the hot and cold seasons. But two large outdoor events take place with the change of season. In case you're in the city, we'll tell you about a couple of these that you can't leave without visiting them. The first one is the Skyscraper Festival. Curiously enough, this festival is organized during the month of May and curiously takes place in the financial district. It brings colour to these streets and provides an atmosphere which is completely different from the rest of the year. By the way, you'll be able to enter most of the skyscrapers in the city during this week, which are usually closed to the public. The other big event is the one that's organized between March and April in 'Festplatz a.m. Ratsweg', called 'Frühlings Dippemesshiuhih' and it's in charge of celebrating the end of the winter. The whole area is full of stalls offering local food and wines, and there are many musical performances.

Although Frankfurt isn't known as one of the capitals for its nocturnal atmosphere, the city has a few places that are well worth visiting. First of all, you must head down to the district of 'Alt Sachsenhausen'. It's the area of nightlife due to its own merit. You've really got to lose yourself in the so-called kneipen (bars). But the route doesn't end here. The night continues in the districts of 'Zeil' and 'Bleich' . These are especially known for their disco music, and some of the city's liveliest discos open on these streets. As well as those that are open until later. You must know that these two areas are also known for their gay atmosphere and for having a variety of the most designer and state-of-the-art pubs in Frankfurt. Last but not least, the area of 'Kaiserstrasse' also enjoys a fair amount of nightlife atmosphere but it can be somewhat wilder.

Its programme welcomes all kinds of theatre shows from classic representations to those of the most state-of-the-art variety, although it is true that the latter of these are the mostly performed. 'Oper Frankfurt' and 'Alte Oper'

Are you wondering why there are two operas in Frankfurt? We'll tell you the story. The famous 'Alte Oper' inaugurated in 1880. This was a project by the architect Richard Lucae, which didn't only become the headquarters for Opera in Frankfurt, it also turned into one of the most popular buildings among the locals. Even Kaiser Wilhelm I showed his pride to have this opera in its city during its inauguration. Unfortunately, the building was practically reduced to a pile of ruins due to the bombings of the Second World War. That's why the new opera house was built between 1959 and 1963. The new building is located in the square named 'Willy Brandt'. As this new construction was, and continues to be a wonderful setting that was very popular with the public, it was a public outcry that prevented the 'Alte Oper' to be demolished. In fact, some refurbishing has begun and although this will be expensive, it will allow the old building to open its doors. The city of Frankfurt can now show its two operas with pride.
Sachsenhausen
This district isn't just a must-visit due to its authenticity, it also has to be visited for its atmosphere and there's always something to do here!

You'll find these kinds of shops mainly on the streets named 'Scweizer', 'Berger' and 'Börsenstrasse'. But if you're around there, we recommended you to lose yourself among the side streets and you'll surely find a variety of interesting shops. Every Friday, the district of 'Biebergrasse' transforms and becomes a colourful place which is full of people and this is because the Flower Market or 'Blumenmarkt' is organized here in this area. As its name suggest, the first thing that you are going to find in this market are all the flowers and plants that you can imagine. You'll find bunches of flowers of all species and colours, to plants from the area and any other place in the world. In fact, its exotic plant stalls are very popular, where you can find bonsais to small vegetable plants that we have never heard of. But it doesn't end here because you can find all kinds of different stalls here as the market is so big. There are also many little stalls that sell regional products and organic food. It's worth a visit just for the atmosphere that you can enjoy here.

The Kaufhof Shopping Centre

Now, you should be aware that it's one of the most expensive and exclusive shops as far as food in Frankfurt is concerned. During your visit, you can also enjoy a terrace, and a café on the top floor of the building where you can see views of the whole city from this viewpoint. A commercial artery of Frankfurt.
Zeil Street is the large avenue that runs through the city centre which joins the two squares of 'Hauptwache' and 'Konstablerwache'. This street and its surrounding buildings were built during the 19th century. Unfortunately, this place was reduced to ruins due to the Second World War and the famous bombings that destroyed the city. But it wasn't rebuilt in this case because now it's the main shopping street in the city. Throughout this walk (as this is a pedestrian street), you'll find all kinds of shops and in the middle of this golden mile of shopping, you'll see the Zeilgalerie shopping centre, which is one of the main shopping areas in Frankfurt. You'll also find another big shopping centre in Hauptwache Square. This lively avenue has a busy atmosphere during the whole day, but it's during the weekends when this street is absolutely teeming full of people.
Grüneburgpark
29 impressive green hectares help to oxygenate the city and it's said that Goethe was inspired under its trees.
The park of the green castle.
Just like the vast majority of Germany, this city is very much aware of the environment and how important green areas are. This explains why it's normal to find a good number of parks in the city. In this case, 'Grüneburg' is a park which makes up one of its large green areas. It's also called the park of the green castle which refers to a castle that unfortunately no longer exists. Occupying a total of 29 hectares, it's the largest park in the district of 'Westend' and since it was built around the 14th century, this park has always been property of the city's wealthiest families. Bankers, entrepreneurs and politicians have owned this property until the Rothschild family acquired it, who were in charge of building the park that you see nowadays. The folk legend has it that Goethe composed a large number of his works under its trees, while he used to walk around these endless paths. Besides this, the Palm Garden is located very near here, which is one of the loveliest botanical gardens that you could ever see.

Apfelwein in Hesse.
Although it's beer which is the most famous and widely exported drink from Frankfurt and the rest of the country (and rightly so with more than 5000 of their own brands and a tradition that goes back to medieval times), there is another traditional and special beverage in the city that you are in. It's known as 'Apfelwein'. This beverage is a wine which is made from apples and it's said that the taste is similar to that of cider (the Spanish drink which originates from the area of Asturias). It's typical from the district of 'Hesse' which is why we recommend you to try it here in this area. There is a place in the heart of the 'Sachsenhausen' district called 'Zum Gemalten Haus', which is the main place for this unusual alcoholic drink. Besides this, you must know that this beverage is protected. Such is the case that the local government has enforced a law to keep it as the cheapest and most affordable drink in the establishments of this district.

Built during the 14th century.
At around a half-hour walk away, you'll find this place in the outskirts of the city. This is the castle of 'Sachsenhauser Warte'. This building has been standing there since the 14th century and it had to be reconstructed during the 18th century when it was practically in ruins. The castle then had to bear the Second World War bombings, which practically destroyed it in the same way as they did to a large part of the city. Nevertheless, it now stands tall and proud after its reconstruction with a yellow tower, so that it can be easily located. Inside this castle is a lovely restaurant which is set in unique surroundings. We especially recommend its enormous terrace with wooden banquet tables which maintain the original decoration of the building. Once seated, and to kill some time, it's traditional to order a 'Schöfferhofer' beer, since this brewery is based around this vicinity. The kitchen in this restaurant is famous for their meats and their typical recipes of the area, which turns it into the ideal place to try the steak or the 'Frankfurter Rippchen'. Wagner Restaurant
This restaurant is highly recommended for both lunch and dinner, and it's located in the heart of the 'Sachsenhausen' district.
Traditional food and an unbeatable atmosphere.
If you happen to be in the district of 'Sachsenhausen' with the intention of going to lunch or dinner, the choice is endless in the Wagner. It's true that any tavern or bar is highly recommended in this district, but we'll give you an option if you're not sure know where to begin. The Wagner restaurant is located on the street named 'Schweizer'. This is one of the most popular restaurants in the area and it's the perfect place to eat. Now, you must be aware that they are experts in traditional food. Local recipes and regional cuisine are their specialities and it's also worth coming to eat here for its atmosphere. During the day, the restaurant is full of locals and workers who come to relax and have a beer or to eat some lunch, in order to continue with their day. Later on, it becomes the district's epicentre of leisure at night. There are many people who don't even order any food, they only come to have the first beers of the night. This same goes for the cakes made by 'Lebkuche-Schimdt'. There is a large variety of places where you can buy these type of desserts but we recommend that you visit 'Leyssieffer', which is located in the old train station (a place which you'll surely pass by at some time during your visit). You'll understand why all neighbouring residents of the city come to this place as soon as you walk in the shop.

The famous German sausages are probably the product which is most genuinely German or they are the most famous, at least. But there is a great variety within this type of meat and according to the area of the country, there are different variations from others. In Frankfurt, the typical sausages are called 'Frankfurter Würstechen'. They are made from pork loin meat which is smoked and seasoned with salt, pepper and sometimes with other spices. The usual way to eat them is to simply heat them up and accompany them with a salad and potatoes (often presented in the form of a puré), radish, bread and especially mustard (the king of sauces in the area). Any place is good to try them since they are the traditional dish of the city, but the district of 'Hesse' has a great tradition of making these sausages. We present you two of the sweetest places than you can find in Frankfurt. They are two cake shops that don't only prepare the typical sweets and chocolates of the city, they're also specialists in cupcakes. The first one is called 'We Love Cupcakes' and it's located at number 35 on the street named 'Gartenstrasse'. The second is another institution in the world of sweets. It's a place called 'Jenny's Cupcakes' and you'll find their shop at number 154 on Berger Street. Both premises have developed the special feature of elaborating these cupcakes in an original way. On one hand, you can try interesting mixtures like the popular butter cupcake or the Spaghettieis (a type of ice cream in the shape of Italian pasta). Naturally, they're also specialists in the elaboration and spectacular presentation of cupcakes, which are made with typical sweet products of the area, famous brands of chocolate and using original, home-made recipes. Kleinmarkthalle
A fabulous and friendly street market where the most glamorous range of foods has the leading role. This is one of Frankfurt's must-visits.

The Kleinmarkthalle market is located at number 5 on the street named 'Hasengasse', in the heart of the city centre. This market has been open for trade since 1870 and it makes a nice contrast to the seriousness of the financial centre. Although this enormous place was on the verge of being closed down due to the bombings during the 40's, the market recovered to be the main place for all those interested in gastronomy. Throughout more than 60 of its stalls, you'll find gastronomical products from all over the globe and particularly from the same region. This place is a paradise for gourmet food and you can find products which come from the Asian continent and many of the world's remote places on stalls on the second floor. Naturally, you'll also find all typical foods used in German cuisine. There's even an exquisite and very economically priced section of prepared food, as well as a restaurant in which you can taste everything that you see.

The Icon Museum
Frankfurt is a puzzle of artistic expressions where any artistic style fits. This museum completes that puzzle.
Another piece.
As you go around the streets of Frankfurt, you'll notice that this small city has the capacity for nearly all artistic trends. Practically all historical moments and their corresponding works of art are gathered in some place in the city and the Icon Museum puts the Eastern counterpoint into this puzzle of artistic expressions. Since its opening in 1990, it has been gaining a space in the cultural attraction of the city and it's currently one of the most visited exhibition halls. This museum started with a donation by a doctor named Jörgen Schmidt-Voigt who possessed a collection of 800 pieces. All of them are of Eastern origin. The donation was made in 1988 and it has increased since then. The building which houses this museum was designed by the popular urban architect, Oswald Ungers, who also designed the German Architecture Museum.
The Giersch and Portikus Museums
Art hidden in a mansion that dates back to 1910. The mansion itself is worth visiting.
Regional and contemporary art.
This museum opens its doors to contemporary art lovers. The Giersch Museum is made up of two visits in the one building. The first visit is the building itself in which the museum is based. Set on the 'Museumsufer' (museum embankment), this neoclassic-style villa appears on the banks of the Main river. It's worth coming to visit this place just to see this mansion which was built in 1910. On the other hand, there is a good variety of collections on exhibition in the museum, which feature 19th-century artists as well as other artists from later periods. Most of them are closely related to the city of Frankfurt and the region of the Main. The intention behind this museum was to make space to exhibit expressions of regional art, which is why it's a good place to understand the culture and a good way to understand the art from this area. The Museum is located at number 83 on the street named 'Schaumankai'.
The Communication Museum
This is a different and interesting artistic refuge of telephone equipment and stamps, among many other items and objects.
The needle in the haystack.
On the street named 'Schaumainkai' in the city centre, you'll find this unusual museum which is a different kind of place from the rest of the exhibitions and it's called the Communication Museum. This peculiar museum offers you a journey through the evolution of modes of communication which takes you up to our time nowadays. You will find all types of ancient and baffling machines or gadgets used for communication purposes. However, there are two collections that you have to go and see. The first is a collection of telephone equipment which ranges from 1863 up to nowadays and the second collection is an exhibition of relics from postal services, especially stamps that have come from all over the world and from all periods in time. In contrast, there are usually peculiar and state-of-the-art modes of communication in the museum's temporary exhibition halls which are based on the publicity and the marketing that the most innovating modes of communication have to offer.
The German Architecture Museum
Scale models, plans and photographs housed in an 18th century villa - it's worth the effort to visit the museum only for these.
An extremely important DAM.
The German Architecture Museum ('Deutsches Architekturmuseum' or DAM) is one of the most important museums in the city and it's part of the museum embankment tour of 'Museumsufer'. Dedicated to the history and evolution of German architecture, it mainly focuses on modern trends and buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries. Inside this museum, there's a tour of more than 600 scale models, 160,000 plans and innumerable photographs on display throughout these artistic trends. They show works by historic architects such as the multitalented Frank Gehry, Archigram, Mies van der Rohe and Erich Mendelsohn. Located in an old 18th-century villa, this construction itself is a work of architecture to go and see. It was a project by the well-known architect Oswald Mathias Ungers. Close to bathing in the waters of the Main River, it's worth going just to see this building.
The Naturmuseum Senckenberg
A perfect museum for the little ones in the family: dinosaurs, birds, cave men… what else can you ask for?
Fossils galore.
You must know that this is largest and most important natural history museum in the whole of Germany and you also must be aware that it's one of the most popular museums for children. So, if you are travelling with children, it's a good opportunity to visit this museum. The most outstanding feature of this gigantic building is the unprecedented collection of dinosaur and bird fossils that are kept inside the building. Complemented with another collection of hominids, a beautiful story of animal evolution is told through this collection, which is very entertaining for children. This museum has been open since 1907 and since then, it's been updated with the intention of offering a tour throughout human and animal evolution which can be shown to all age groups. This is why those interested in science and evolution theories must visit this museum.
Goethe House and Museum
Goethe's legacy has incalculable value within global culture. It would be a mistake not to know this when you are in Frankfurt.
A universal man.
Johann Wolfgang van Goethe was one of the most important poets, dramatists, writers and scientists of the 18th century. In fact, it's said that he was one of the last universal men because he practised all forms of art. Besides this, he was one of the founders of the Romantic movement which was especially rooted in Germany. Goethe was born in 1749 at number 24 on a street named 'Grober Hirschgraben' and this birthplace, in which the writer grew up is now a museum which is open to the public. Inside this building, you can visit the rooms such as the living room where he wrote a large part of his works, or his bedroom and the rest of the house. There is also a large exhibition of writings and manuscripts of his works that are worth unspeakable value. This house is a place of worship for all those who are generally interested in literature and culture.
The Städel Art Museum
This spectacular and giant building conceals an artistic collection with a long and tragic history.
Cruel history.
This gigantic museum which is located on the banks of the Main River is home to some cruel history which is stored inside this building. A large part of the collection that this spectacular building contains was declared as degenerate art during the Thirties. This was the period of the national socialists when public exhibition of this art was prohibited. In addition, the arrival of the Second World War meant that many works of art had to be hidden so that they wouldn't suffer any damage, or they were robbed in the frequent pillaging that occurred in the city. It was thanks to these precautions that the art survived because the building was actually seriously damaged due to the bombing and was in need of reconstruction. The museum opened again during the 60's with works by Beckmann and Cranach. Works by Rembrandt, Boticcelli and Rubens were subsequently added to these collections and the Sculptors of more recent creations such as Picasso and Rodin appeared later.

If you're into modern and contemporary art, don't skip this visit for anything in the world: Warhol is waiting for you!
Pop art in action.
Just as the city covers a large amount of artistic trends and historical periods, so do the museums in Frankfurt. Along the Museum Embankment and around the rest of the city, you'll see different, eclectic and heterogeneous museums that must be visited. The Museum of Modern Art is one of these museums. It opened its doors in 1991 and this musem exhibits one of the most important collections of modern and Pop Art in the world. These collections are continually moved and updated but they are always focused on American and European art from the 60's to the present. In fact, there are also temporary and permanent exhibitions of contemporary artists. One of the most interesting parts could be the exhibition on post-war art, which features works by German and American artists such as Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg.
The Museum Embankment
A really lovely and interesting area: the museums on summer nights are a must-visit!
A night in the museum.
The museum embankment is called 'Museumsufer' in German. Many of the city's museums are concentrated on the banks of the Main River and this is why the city of Frankfurt decided to carefully restore the whole district during the 80's. The majority of neighbouring houses and buildings were added to the project. People started to look after and maintain the historic character of the structures of these buildings which is why most of these buildings maintain their original and historic shapes. You can therefore observe the evolution of civil architecture on the same street which is so typically German. As a result, you'll find one of the loveliest cultural areas in the city. We recommended that you visit the Icon Museum, the Museum of Applied Arts, and the German Film Museum. All these (and many others) are located here in this area. By the way, a museum night is organized each August in which all of the museum's rooms remain open. If you're in the city, it's a rare chance to visit these places!
The German Film Museum
For lovers of the seventh art - this museum is a must-visit and you'll leave here with a very good feeling!
Peculiar and interesting.
The German Film Museum is one of the most peculiar that you can visit. It opened during 1983 and 1984 as part of an initiative by the city to promote cinema in the region and the country. What they achieved, however, was to create one of the most interesting exhibitions on the seventh art that you can find. Its tour focuses on three different aspects. The first part shows technical elements of cinema such as cameras, lighting, settings and costume designs. The second section of the visit is shown by testimonies and memories of film shootings by means of original clothes, photographs and all type of real and different elements which are preferentially related to the city or the country. And finally, there is a journey through time which goes through different moments in cinema through the use of projections, films and news articles. Although it focuses on German cinema, this museum shows a complete overview of this art throughout history. It's essential for film buffs.
St. Paul's Church
This historic church is an important democratic symbol for the city. Find out why!
Green with red to match.
This is one of the most important churches in Frankfurt for three reasons. First of all, its oval shape and green roofs mixed with the reddish colour of its walls turn it into a very well-known and original piece of architecture. Secondly, it was a church which was built in 1789 as one of the first protestant churches in the city. The Protestant religion is the second largest in the city and one of the most important points for being able to understand German culture and history. But most of all, it's remembered because this circular-floored church was chosen as the parliament headquarters for the city of Frankfurt during the so-called 'Spring of Nations' in 1848. With this status, the church hosted each National Assembly meeting for two years and it was due to this that it has gone down in history as one of the most important democratic symbols of the city.
Main Tower
It looks like there are two, but there is actually only one. With its rectangular and cylindrical shape, this building is really something special.
Two in one?
In the city centre, there is a building which is different from the others. It's easily recognizable, it measures about 200 metres tall and it looks like two buildings in one. In effect, the Main Tower building, or Frankfurt Tower, was built between 1996 and 1999, and it's a project that integrates two buildings in one. The smallest is attached to the larger one as it ascends up. The mixture of both cylindrical and rectangular shapes also make it very original. This has made the Main Tower immediately become one of the city's trademarks. In fact, it's the only skyscraper built in this way. As well as this, the building contains an observatory at the top of its 56 floors which is open to the public. It is highly recommended to go up to its observatory because as you can imagine, the views are impressive from this point, and they allow you to get a different perspective of Frankfurt.
Römer
These buildings show the splendour of Frankfurt's past and present.
Central and important.
The 'Römer' is one of the most important buildings in the city. Located in the central square of 'Römerberg', these buildings fulfilled the function of the city council during more than four centuries, since 1405 onward. In fact, what's left of this square is a reconstruction of what there was in that period, since the city of Frankfurt was particularly damaged during the Second World War and this square in particular was left in ruins. But the loyal reconstruction of these three buildings that preside over the square do justice for the glorious times that Frankfurt lived when it was the headquarters of the coronation of German emperors. Besides this, to observe this place also means to contemplate the perfect example of German architecture. Their wooden beams, gable roofs and the patterns in which they are decorated were carefully chosen to be one of the flags of the city.
Frankfurt Stock Exchange
While you visit this place, take a look at the statues opposite the building - apart from being amusing, they're very symbolic!
In third position.
Although it's not as popular as others, the Frankfurt stock-market is the most important in Germany and the third most important in the world. It's one of the key places for investment and finance in the whole country. After the Second World War and the fall of the Nazi government, the city was gradually restored and it recovered its confidence to become an objective for investment for a large amount of companies from all over the world. In fact, it had to become the headquarters of the Central European Bank due to the enormous stock-exchange and enterprise movement that developed. It has to be taken into account that Germany is one of the strongest economic powers in the European Union. In front of the stock-market building, there are two amusing and symbolic statues. These are the bear and the bull, which are the two symbols that represent this institution. You only have to look at their position to understand that the bull symbolizes the peaks of the stock-market and the bear represents the troughs.
Commerzbank Tower
A 90's skyscraper with large windows. The natural light in the building and its nocturnal lighting are both impressive.
A financial symbol of Frankfurt.
This tower, together with the Main Tower, make up the two most characteristic symbols of Frankfurt's financial buildings. This skyscraper was built in the middle of the 90's by the architectural firm, Foster & Partners, with the intention of showing the strength and rise of the region's economy. That's why the tallest tower in Europe was erected and this construction stands 259 metres tall. This title was held until the year 2003, when it was surpassed by the city of Moscow and its Triumph Palace. At present, the Commerzbank is still the tallest building in Germany. As a usual feature of the constructions by these architects, this building was constructed and based on the sets of its enormous glass windows. Unfortunately, the only floor which is open to the public is the ground floor, but it's worth a visit just to see how the light and glass is enjoyed inside this building. Its nocturnal lighting is a also quite a spectacle.
Höchster Schlobplatz
1,100 paved and magical square metres in the middle of the old town. You can't leave without visiting this place!
A strategic location.
Located in the old city centre, this square is a strategic location for planning a journey through time around the city of Frankfurt. Located at the end of the street named 'Bolongarostrasse', you'll find this square which is surrounded by several historic buildings. To one side, you have the South Tower, which is to the west of St. Justin's Church (the oldest church in Frankfurt and among the longest-standing in Germany) and to the north, you'll see where the 'Schlob Höchst' starts. This enormous paved square has an area of nearly 1,100 square metres and a stone ground that's been there since Medieval times which is just waiting for you to come and visit it. It's one of those magical places in the city, which is why a few cafés and terraces have been opened here by the side. It's worth taking a seat for a while here and to have a drink or something as you gaze at the landscape. Think that the origins of the city took place around here. There's a great atmosphere in the square that continues late on into the night and especially during the spring and summer seasons.
St. Catherine's Church
This church is a good example of the religious diversity and the mixture of cultures in Frankfurt.
Evangelical and colourful.
The cultural fusion and the religious diversity that Frankfurt has enjoyed throughout its history has caused quite a collage of cultures and civilizations that you can find throughout its streets. One of its most representative signs of this are the churches and temples. Throughout the city, you'll find buildings that represent the traditions and beliefs of some of the people from Frankfurt. This is the case with this Church of St. Catherine. This evangelical church already displays a different shape to the others. Raised in 1681 in honour of a Christian martyr, this church mixes ecclesiastical architecture with typical elements of German civilian constructions such as the noticeable gable roofs. Its colourful facade in tones of yellow also make it original, as well as its peculiar clock with golden hands that crowns its main tower. Despite the bombing of this church during World War II, it survived to remain as one of the nicest churches in the city.
St. Justin's Church Frankfurt
To visit the oldest church in the area and its surroundings means to immerse yourself in the origin of the city. Interesting and steeped in history!
The oldest.
St. Justin's Church is located in the area of one of Frankfurt's suburbs known as 'Höchst'. Located to the west of the city, this suburb has been popular due to the intense industrialization which occurred here during the 19th century. Nevertheless, few people know that the city's most interesting old town is located here. Among its narrow medieval streets, you'll arrive at this church of St. Justin. It stands out primarily due to the beauty of the building, which is an example of the area's religious architecture. But its true interest lies in the fact that it's the oldest church of the region. Besides this, it's believed to be the oldest church in Germany. The building was built in year 830 (although its chapel dates back to 1441). Since then, its stone walls of the Carolingian period have been standing the test of time. Apart from visiting this church, we recommended that you take a walk around this suburb because the origins of Frankfurt are there to be discovered in its streets.

Throughout the city, you can find catholic and evangelist temples as well as those of other orders and trends. The 'Frauenfriedenskirche' is a unusual temple which was raised during the inter-war period between 1927 and 1929. Unlike the other churches in Frankfurt, this one has elements of the Bauhaus Movement and expressionism. This building was an initiative by the Catholic German Women's Organisation and it has become a peace symbol.
St. Bartholomew Cathedral
What was an imperial cathedral in the past, is now an immense and reddish-coloured historical church nowadays. A must-visit.

St. Bartholomew Cathedral or Frankfurt am Main Cathedral is an enormous church of nearly 100 metres in height which witnessed the city of Frankfurt's growth from the 9th century. With its reddish colour caused by its sandstone structure, this church was consecrated to Saint Bartholomew in the year of 1239. The fact that several German emperors were crowned in this place also during the 13th century, is the reason why it was named an imperial church and then 'Kaiserdorm' or Imperial Cathedral. Unfortunately, Allied Forces bombed Frankfurt between 1943 and 1944, which left the city deeply devastated and resulted in human massacre. There was an enormous amount of damage caused to this church, and in fact the interior of the building was completely burned. Nowadays, the cathedral has been completely reconstructed. To the side of the cathedral stands the 'Dommuseum', where a large part of the archaeological heritage can be observed which has formed part of the cathedral and the history of Frankfurt since its beginning.
