Travel guide: what to do and see in Split
Tourist Gem: Joya Adriática de Historia Viva
Split, the second-largest city in Croatia, is famous for the ancient Diocletian's Palace, a 4th-century Roman fortress that forms the core of the old town. This UNESCO World Heritage complex is a maze of narrow streets where modern shops and ancient ruins coexist.
Its Riva waterfront promenade, lined with cafes and palm trees, is the center of the city's social life. Likewise, its Cathedral of Saint Domnius, originally Diocletian's mausoleum, offers incredible panoramic views of the city from its bell tower.
In addition, Split has magnificent beaches like Bačvice, a perfect place to relax and enjoy the Adriatic Sea. Marjan Forest Park offers trails for walking and cycling with spectacular views of the city and nearby islands.
For its part, Dalmatian gastronomy, with its fresh seafood and local wines, is an additional attraction. Open-air markets, such as Pazar, offer local products and an authentic experience as Split combines living Roman history, Mediterranean beaches, and modern Croatian culture, offering a unique experience on the Dalmatian coast.
