Uruguayan cuisine is the product of a melting pot, the result of the influx of Spanish and Italian immigrants, as well as smaller volumes of French, British, German and other nationalities, between colonial times and the mid-20th century. You will therefore find fish, sea food and pasta dishes as well as pizzas. Meat, the leitmotif of our traditional cuisine, was integrated into the dishes brought by immigrants, lending them a local flavour and transforming original recipes. Today, these assorted stews form part of the family diet.
As a result of autochthonous influences, the asado and mate consumed in the rural areas by the Charrúa, Guaraní and Creole peoples before the birth of our nation have gradually been embraced in the capital by every sector of society, to the point where today asado is the most popular food and mate has become the national infusion and beverage.

More information from Uruguay
Uruguay, known as the Banda Oriental in Colonial times, is the second smallest country in South America, and the only one to be fully located entirely within a temperate zone. This means that it enjoys a stable and temperate climate throughout the year, and therefore visits to both its cities and its beaches can be planned at any time of the year.
Montevideo, the country’s capital, is worth a visit, with its Old Town filled with book shops. This is why some say that this is the country where the best writers are born per square metre. The famous Carnivals are celebrated every January and February, which is a tradition passed down from the time of African slavery, and is today one of the city’s most important festivals. Punta del Este is another must-see, boasting marvellous beaches and a spa area, making it one of the country’s top tourist destinations.
However, this is not the only area for spas and thermal waters, as they can be found all the way along the Uruguay riverbank, with the Guarani Aquifer, one of the planet’s most important water reservoirs, ranging from 38 to 46 degrees. Other interesting attractions include the Sacramento Colony, Salto, Lavalleja and Rocha.
