Of all the bakeries in Algiers, this is the most highly recommended for sampling traditional cakes and pastries and for taking home an exquisite, sugary tray of souvenirs. The Pâtisserie Noor el Hani was opened in 2002 by the great pastry chef Idiri Malika. It has been such a success that it now has three sister stores in the capital and is considered as a real gourmet option. The key to its success lies in the use of top-quality ingredients and the combination of traditional recipes with more modern creations. At Pâtisserie Noor el Hani, you'll be treated to the cream of Algerian sweets, where honey, almonds and pistachios take centre stage, but with a very characteristic personal touch. They even do low-calorie options. There’s no better souvenir than an edible treat!

Home to the great artisans of the city
This district is at the feet of the Casbah and has strong bohemian and working-class roots. It is one of the main artisan centres of the city and has been home to the largest number of workshops for decades. This tradition, artisan crafts, has been experiencing a considerable boom as the number of tourists continues to rise. In Bad El Oued, you'll have the chance to visit small craft markets, see first-hand how some products are made and buy directly from the artisans, with no middle man. You’ll find a wide range of tapestries, carpets, fashion jewellery, decorative items, fabrics, leather goods and other beautiful, handmade products. A word of advice? Be prepared to haggle, as you might get a better price than the one you're first offered. The best place to buy that special something you've spent ages looking for.

A deep-rooted tradition
If we had to choose one Algerian tradition related to the world of shopping, it would have to be a trip to the city's main bazaars. These bazaars are small markets that are usually held in the open air and offer the most eclectic range of good you could image, from antiques to food to decorative items. The common feature that links them all is the constant flow of people, a thriving mass of shoppers that never seems to let up: you'll end up loving it or hating it, depending on your personal tastes. In Algiers, there are lots of different bazaars in the different districts of the city, but perhaps the most famous are those around the Mosque of the Fishermen and the Chaat Market, in the centre of the city. At these lively markets, you’ll get first-hand experience of the haggling between sellers and buyers and you'll have the chance to buy exotic fresh fruit, tapestries and local artisan products.

If you're an avid reader, this bookshop will soon become one of your favourite places in the capital. The Librairie des Beaux-Arts is thought of by many as the best bookshop in Algiers, both for its intellectual atmosphere and its rich history, as it was the meeting place for writers such as Albert Camus, Tahar Djaout or Emmanuel Roblès, the masters of Algerian literature. Opening in the 1950s, it has been a bohemian haven ever since and is still a cultural reference point in the city today. It has a large selection of books about Algeria, as well as all the great works and others that are less well known by the country's leading authors that would be hard to find elsewhere; there are also special editions from local publishing houses and some contemporary magazines. If only to soak up the very special atmosphere here, a visit to the Librairie des Beaux-Arts is well worth it.

Options for all tastes
The culture of shopping centres is slowly taking hold in Algiers, but there is still a way to go before it reaches the same level as in Western cities. As well as those mentioned above, there are other large centres such as the Zemzem Shopping Centre or the Taiba Shopping Centre, enormous buildings that are full of fashion boutiques. However, many locals still prefer to go to the street bazaars or the traditional supermarkets like UNO or Ardis, which offer most services at more affordable prices. Other main avenues that are full of shops, such as Hassiba Ben Bouali, complete the broad range of shopping options that make Algiers not only the political capital of the country but also the nation’s largest trading area. Shopping fans can rest assured: in Algiers, you can shop till you drop.

Located on the outskirts of Algiers, in the popular Bachdjerah district, the Hamza Shopping Centre is one of the main attractions for the younger crowd and a real paradise for all shopping fans. The best thing about this place is its famed eclecticism, as it is home to all kinds of shops with very clearly defined styles that cater for all tastes. You’ll find shops selling all the latest fashions alongside other for more conservative families, selling very traditional Algerian clothes. This allows visitors the chance to see different social classes interacting on a daily basis, creating a very striking crowd of shoppers. An afternoon spent at this shopping centre is sure to be a very unique experience. What's more, it also has cosmetics shops, beauty salons, book shops, accessories, home ware, numerous restaurants and a cinema.
Bab Ezzouar Shopping Centre

The largest in the city
Bab Ezzouar is the largest and best-known shopping centre in the capital, a gigantic space of over 100,000m2 dedicated to leisure and, above all, shopping. It opened in December 2009. There are over one hundred shops selling the largest range of goods you could image: fashion jewellery, electronics, home accessories, household goods, lingerie, opticians, stores selling beauty products, make-up and more. You'll have no problem finding anything you want here! It has an outstanding range of fashion brands for both men and women, which is quite rare compared to the rest of the city, including Levis, Bershka, Diamantine, Tommy Hilfiger, Zara, Lacoste, Mango or Punt Roma, among many others. There is also a good selection of restaurants, with various international options (Mexican, Hindu, fast food, Italian), which are ideal for recovering from a busy afternoon of shopping.

We've arrived at the main street in Algiers. This brief description gives an idea of the importance of this street within the city as a whole, an extensive boulevard that has also become the main shopping area. It is always really busy at any time of the day and has two distinguishing features: the huge array of shops on both sides of the street and the intense traffic it sees every day. The ideal place for shopping in the capital, it is home to the best boutiques for national and international trends, luxury jewellers, shops selling all kinds of accessories, including delicately embroidered garments that are much more typical of the country, and bohemian bookshops. The Rue Didouche Mourad is also the best place to buy a souvenir of your time in Algiers, as it would be difficult to find such variety in any other part of the city.

The Mediterranean Sea takes centre stage
It would be impossible to understand the history of Algeria without looking to the Mediterranean Sea, one of the elements that has defined traditions and the way of life in a large part of the country; perhaps unsurprisingly, as the Algerian coastline is over one thousand kilometres long. Covering invasions, battles, the influence of other cultures and the coastline as an economic driver, this museum celebrates the country’s invaluable connection to the sea through temporary exhibitions, workshops, documentary screenings and conferences that are held all year round. The museum not only explains the various missions undertaken by the Algerian Navy and the models of boats it has, but it also promotes the nation's subaquatic heritage and maritime archaeology. A highly recommended visit for exploring a different side to the Mediterranean Sea and finding out about its influence on the Maghreb region.
Public Museum of Illustration, Miniatures and Calligraphy

Original, to say the least; and it is that there are few museums in the entire African continent as specialized as this one, dedicated entirely to illustrations, miniatures and calligraphy. The axis on which this center turns is the enluminure, a French word that designates illuminated manuscripts, that is, those in which the text is complemented by large decorated letters, striking borders and certain miniature drawings. They are codices characterized by bright colors, some of them even decorated with gold and silver, very beautifully made. Here you will find excellent historical specimens and other more recent works, the result of the meticulous work of contemporary artists who master the miniature technique. It is also the venue for international festivals on Arabic calligraphy and on these handwriting techniques, where the best creators in this field come together. It is located inside the well-known Mustapha Pacha Palace, whose walls are decorated with around half a million tiles.
Children's Museum

Little known even among the residents themselves, it is one of the great secrets of the capital. And it is that the Children's Museum has everything to become an unavoidable reference if you are traveling with your children: an incomparable environment (the leafy Beyrouth Park), a beautiful Moorish-style building and contents that will delight the youngest of home. Inside it has a fun collection of dolls with typical costumes from different countries, a library with comics and children's books and samples of 'works of art' made by themselves. Throughout the year they also develop theater, painting and calligraphy workshops so that they can enjoy learning while playing. It is the only museum of its kind in the country and one of the few you will find in the entire African continent. It opened its doors in 1965. Enjoy it!

The war against France, in detail
A real national icon, symbol of the Algerian liberation. This museum takes you on a journey through the history of the country's army and the most significant conflicts fought within its borders, from prehistory to the 20th century. It focuses especially on the War of Independence against France between 1954 and 1962, with photographs, documents and eye-witness accounts from the great heroes of the nation. This very thorough collection explains the causes of the revolution, the guerrilla warfare and the development of the conflict from the victors' perspective. You'll also get an up-close look at original, life-size military equipment, such as rockets, missiles, armour, old cannons, weapons and vehicles. It opened in 1968, inside a former church, and has five large floors. Photographs are not permitted inside the museum.
Palais des Raïs
Visual arts and sculptures in one of the best buildings in the city.
A luxurious cultural centre
Located at the heart of the Casbah, this building is perhaps the best example of the city in terms of the combination of historical and culture space. It is a stunningly beautiful, 18th-century palace which has had many different uses over time; for example, it was once the main site of the National Library. It is currently home to the Palais des Raïs Centre of Arts and Culture, which hosts evocative exhibitions of visual arts and sculptures, and has a broad programme of conferences and activities. It also organises more informal events, such as children's shows or collections of Algerian craft. And the best thing? The architecture of the palace complex, a real decorative treasure with carved wooden ceilings and symmetrical arcades complete with Solomonic columns and an incredible array of coloured tiles. There are Arabesque reminiscences everywhere. You'll love it!
Museum of Antiquities

A stroll through the history of the country
This museum opened in 1897, making it the oldest in Algiers. It is known for its enormous collection of relics and objects that help explain the extensive history of Algeria and the way in which other cultures, such as the Roman or the French, have shaped the country as it is today. At this museum, you'll find an evocative array of classical art, with works in marble or coloured tiles that reflect the power held by this region in centuries gone by. There are also sculptures and bronze statutes from the Roman Empire; some of which are impressively large and in very good condition. The room dedicated to the worship of pagan Gods is especially interesting. There is also an excellent collection of Islamic Art, including numerous pieces from both Algeria and other countries in the region.
Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions
A journey through the country's most deep-rooted customs and the Algerian way of life.
Incredible artisan creations
Believe us: this will be one of the most interesting places you'll visit in the city. Located in a pretty Ottoman-style building, this centre will take you on a detailed journey through the customs, traditions and most deep-rooted aspects of the country, such as its artisan crafts and classical culture. The museum has a large collection of everyday Algerian objects, many of them already antiques, such as traditional cooking utensils, fabrics, jewellery, exquisite decorative elements and more, which paint a vivid picture of what everyday life was like in Algeria and how it has changed over time. You'll also see a range of beautiful artisan craftwork, such as rugs or furnishings, and you can even buy an original piece as a souvenir. The museum opened in 1961. From the upper level, you'll get a spectacular, panoramic view of the sea and the old town of Algiers.
Public Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
It doesn't have a permanent collection, but its temporary exhibitions are invaluable.
Internationally renowned
Commonly known as MaMa, its acronym in French, the main aim of this centre is to support and promote the work of contemporary Algerian artists. It still doesn't have a permanent collection, due to its recent creation (it opened in 2007), but the temporary exhibitions it hosts each year are superb and have won international acclaim. In fact, no small number of European and North African artists have been lucky enough to exhibit their work here. At this museum, you’ll find interesting photography displays, paintings and all the latest, most cutting-edge trends, as well as other regular activities such as workshops, talks or entertaining performances. What’s more, the Mama building is especially eye-catching and an incredible example of Neo-Arabic Architecture.
National Museum of Fine Arts
Over eight thousand sculptural, visual and decorative pieces of art. Spectacular!
The biggest museum in Africa
Only a building as beautiful as this would be fit for the largest museum of fine arts in Africa. With over eight thousand pieces of art, it is truly unmissable and not only for its priceless collection but for the grandeur of the building; a four-story, art Deco masterpiece by the architect Paul Guion. Highlights includes the porcelain collection, decorative arts and furnishings, but the most impressive pieces are probably the first-class paintings and sculptures by the likes of Rodin, Degas, Delacroix, Monet or Renoir. A true testament to good taste. The work by the 19th-century Orientalist painters and the highly valuable pieces by contemporary Algerian artists are also worth a special mention. The National Museum of Fine Arts is next to the Jardin d'Essai, offering some spectacular views of the park and the Mediterranean Sea.
Bardo National Museum
A complete journey through Algerian history based on ethnographic exhibitions.
The soul of Algerian culture
You'll find no better place for learning about the history of Algiers, from its deepest routes. The Bardo National Museum is the main ethnographic centre in the city, a place where you'll get the chance to take a complete journey through the soul of the national culture and to gain a first-hand insight into the richness of the country. It is home to various ethnographic collections in the main building and prehistoric collections in the adjoining section, which take you through the various stages of human development from the prehistoric era to present day. The exhibitions run in chronological order. Inside, you'll find various objects from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic eras, a room dedicated to cave paintings and, curiously, a collection of ostrich eggs that our ancestors used as bottles. That said, the most popular exhibition is the tomb, skeleton and grave goods of the Tuareg queen Tin Hinan. You'll be lost for words!
A stroll around the historical town of Kouba
A former colonial settlement that still maintains its original layout within the capital.
Unexpectedly grand
Located to the south of the city centre, this district is an interesting alternative for exploring a side of Algiers that doesn't often feature in travel guides, beyond the most typical spots. Kouba was a colonial settlement built in the mid-19th century but which, due to the growing population, was engulfed by the capital. As such, it has become a district with its own unique personality, maintaining its original layout of large villas, low houses and building that are no more than four or five metres high. A stroll through this area of broad streets and large avenues is a breath of fresh air within the city, as it seems like you're suddenly in a totally different place. It is ideal for an insight into normal life in the city and for sampling a delicious mint tea in one of the tea rooms you'll find along the way.
Tombeau de la Chrétienne
Not only worth a visit for the mausoleum but also for its natural surroundings.
A place of great beauty
If you'll be Algiers for a few days, we recommend getting out of the city and visiting the famous mausoleum known as Tombeau de la Chrétienne, which is in the region of Tipasa, just 45 minutes away by car. This is the burial place of the Berber rulers Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II, whose tombs lie under an enormous circular, domed pyramid, which is 32 metres tall and sixty wide; making it visible for miles around. It isn't currently possible to go inside, but visitors can see the mausoleum from the outside and take in the grandeur of the building, which is also a World Heritage Site. Its prime location on the top of a hill also provides some very pretty and truly inspirational views of the surrounding landscape and the Mediterranean Sea. A place of extraordinary beauty.
The cave of Cervantes
The author of Don Quixote hid in this cave during an attempted escape in 1577.
Curious historic place
A place of pilgrimage for Spanish speakers and for all lovers of universal literature. It was in this cave that the great writer Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote de la Mancha, took refuge for nearly two months in one of his attempts to escape from Algiers in 1577, when he was held captive in the city by pirates. Since the end of the 19th century, it has become a kind of shrine and is recognised as such by the Algerian and the Spanish governments. No small number of visitors come here every day to image what those moments in the life of the genius were like. The outside of the cave has been remodelled to look like a natural spring and there is a column with a marble bust of Cervantes and two commemorative plaques about the writer and this bizarre episode of his life. A curious historic place.
Bordj de Tamentfoust
Climbing the octagonal tower is like travelling back in time.
Sublime views of the Mediterranean
This could be described as one of the city's best kept secrets, a place that has managed to avoid the attentions of mass tourism. The Bordj de Tamentfoust is an old Ottoman fortress built in 1661 which will take you back in time: its walls, which have been very well preserved, bear the scars of age-old battles and the tell-tale signs of a stormy past. The distinguishing feature of this fortress is its octagonal layout, the only example of this style in the entire Maghreb. What's more, it is built following the customs of the era, with small turrets, slots for archers and a moat that could only be crossed by drawbridge. There is a museum inside the complex and the terrace at the top of the tower offers unforgettable views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Algiers. Taking in the immenseness of the sea from this viewpoint is truly spectacular.
Square Port Saïd
Sea-facing and especially enchanting at night.
Green zone at the feet of the Casbah
If you are staying in the centre of Algiers, you'll definitely pass through these gardens at least once. The Square Port Saïd is a 5,500-m2 green zone at the feet of the Casbah, consisting of a series of very popular, intertwining paths. It is named after the French and British Suez campaign in 1956 and is one of the few places in the city that hasn't been renamed after the independence. Its pedestrianised centre is full of palm trees and gardens and it is surrounded by beautiful buildings: The National Theatre of Algiers, the Hotel Terminus shopping galleries and the mythical Café Tantonville. The gardens are especially spectacular by night, when the lighting combines with the Mediterranean breeze to create a sublime, especially enchanting atmosphere.
Ben Aknoun Park and Zoo
As well as its large natural area, there is also a zoo and an amusement park.
Children, the real stars of the show
One of the largest green areas in Algiers, located to the south of the city. It covers an area of over three hundred hectares, and it is the ideal place to get back to nature and escape the hustle and bustle of other parts of the city. A stroll through its greenery will be a more than relaxing experience. It also has two large attractions that give it its own unique personality: a zoo and an amusement park. The first covers over forty hectares and is home to all the most typical African animals including gazelles, lions, camels and various species of birds; the second has several play areas and attractions, although they may appear slightly dated by today's standards. That aside, the Ben Aknoun Park is a great choice for a fun-filled family day out, where the children will have a wonderful time and be the real stars of the show.
Le Jardin d'Essai du Hamma
Home to an enormous range of plants and trees on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
The number one green space in Algiers
A stroll through this beautiful park is always good for the soul, one of those moments that you'll cherish from your visit to the Algerian capital. This is a huge botanical garden, spanning over thirty hectares, where you'll find one of the largest collections of plants and trees in the country, with both native and foreign species. Construction of the park began in 1831, in the French and British style, and it has been the top green space in the city ever since. It is especially popular in the afternoons. Two things really stand out about the park: firstly, its location on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, in the Hamma district, adding an extra facet to its natural charm; and secondly, its flat layout in contrast to the rest of the city. A stroll around Le Jardin d'Essai du Hamma is a real must and the best way to enjoy the more natural side of the city.

A great place to get away from it all
Picture it: a beautiful seaside walk, the enviable local climate, a warm breeze caressing your face and the Mediterranean Sea as an exceptional companion. Can you think of anything more relaxing? We bet you'd struggle. Located on the outskirts of the capital, Sidi Fredj Port is a haven for fans of water sports and for people looking for a bit of time out. It is very popular at the weekends but, despite this, is still one of the best places for getting away from the hustle and bustle of other more central parts of the city. The views here are unbeatable, especially towards the end of the day when the sun starts to set. What's more, after an enchanting stroll along the coast, you can enjoy a romantic meal at one of the numerous restaurants in the area. Ready to discover another side to the city?
Bulevar Che Guevara
Its central location makes it the ideal spot for a pretty night-time stroll.
The seaside promenade par excellence
This is one of the main arteries of the city and one of the busiest streets in the old town. The Bulevar Che Guevara has the honour of being the most famous seaside promenade in Algiers, thanks to its historical importance, its proximity to the city centre and to the monumental buildings that line the street. These include masterpieces dating from 1840 and designed by the architects Pierre-August Guiauchain and Frederic Chassériau, which are easily recognisable thanks to the impressive arcades that form a truly beautiful sight. On the other side, there is a large pedestrianised walkway that is ideal for a peaceful seafront stroll; exploring this area is a real must when in the city to experience the Mediterranean in all its glory. At night, the promenade is very well lit, making it an ideal place for a picturesque walk before bed.

World Heritage Site
A visit to the citadel of Algiers is like stepping back in time to the historical heart of the city, to a place where you can still sense the grandness and splendour of days gone by. The Casbah, the Arabic name for a medina, is located on a small hill facing the sea and is home to an infinite number of winding, cobbled streets full of steps and hidden treasures at every turn. It is divided into two sections: the top part, which is the oldest and where you'll find most of the attractions; and the bottom or French part, where you'll see a clear change in architecture. A stroll within these walls will be an indescribable experience, and you'll feel the atmosphere wash over you as soon as the magic takes holds. The Casbah is so special that it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Completely unmissable.

Live the emotion of soccer
Football lovers have an unmissable date in this historic venue during their time in Algiers. The July 5, 1962 Stadium, whose name pays tribute to the date of the country's independence, is the main sports venue in the city and one of the largest in Africa: the remodeling that is currently being carried out will allow a capacity for 85,000 viewers. Here, the Algerian National Team plays a large part of its matches and is the headquarters of MC Alger, the most successful team in the capital, where state league matches are also held. Witnessing a match in this stadium will be an unforgettable experience, as the fans get excited in a very different way than what can be seen in other European stadiums. If you are lucky enough to coincide with a day in which the national classic is played against JS Kabylie, do not hesitate: you will enjoy it to the fullest!

The most fashionable club in Algiers
For a night of partying till dawn, the best place in town is unquestionably Triangle Club, the most famous night club in Algiers. Very close to the Martyrs' Memorial, this is a real symbol of the night-life in the city thanks to its enticing music and the great atmosphere you’ll find in any of its three rooms. One room is dedicated to jazz music, another to techno and the third, and perhaps most interesting, is where you'll hear bands playing raï, the great icon of Algerian music. This style of music fuses classical melodies with other genres like rap, rock or reggae and uses contemporary elements such as synthesizers. The result? A combination of Arabic music with Western touches that is often performed live while the audience dance along in unison. Seeing this type of music live will be, at the very least, a unique experience. The Triangle Club is the most fashionable in the city.

Perfect start to the night
This is the best place for going out in Algiers and a favourite with the younger generations for kicking off a big night out. Bois des Arcades is located at the highest point of the El Madania district and offers numerous options for having a few drinks or an unforgettable, romantic meal. If you're warming up for a big night ahead, you'll find lots of bars with live music and a relaxed atmosphere that are ideal for groups. There are also a few nightclubs to keep the party going all night. However, if you're looking for a culinary treat in a top restaurant, Bois des Arcades is also home to some of the most famous restaurants in the city, such as Le Tantra, El Boustene or Auberge du Moulin, which are sure to delight even the most demanding palates. Thanks to its prime location, the pretty views of the Bay of Algiers have become the priceless calling card of this area.

We have to admit: the inner city beaches in Algiers do need a bit of work and you even have to pay to go on some of them. However, the solution to this is simple as the capital is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. What’s more, getting to them is no problem at all as it takes under an hour by car, which is ideal for a day trip. To the east of the city you'll find the famous Emerald Coast, one of the country's flagship resorts thanks to its luxury accommodation and range of water sports on offer, such as diving or sailing; to the west, you'll find the Turquoise Coast, with crystal clear water and large holiday and leisure complexes, making it ideal for a family day out. A little further away, but just as good, are the beaches of Tipasa, around 70 kilometres away. You'll be spoilt for choice!

A historic institution
This is one of the cultural icons of Algiers, a film library that in its heyday was the second most important in the world. Opening in 1965, it has been the city's cinematic point of reference ever since. It screens the most varied range of films, with something for everyone: from classic cult offerings to the most modern films, as well as themed cycles focusing on specific topics or countries. It works especially hard to promote Algerian productions and has a hugely valuable catalogue of works, including old films, photographs and cinema posters. The Cinématheque Algérienne also show films from other African countries, presenting a unique opportunity to enjoy productions that don't often reach Europe or the US. It is open every day except Fridays.

Epicentre of the capital's art scene
This is where the capital's cultural scene gets its name. The Moufdi Zakaria Palace, as well as being the head offices of the Ministry for Culture, is the leading centre for events and conferences in the city. Every season, it organises a quality programme of events for all tastes: seminars, conferences, music concerts, national and international symposia, film screenings, plays and much more. It is made up of various halls around a pretty central patio that are equipped for a range of uses: an auditorium with capacity for four hundred people, a full library, a main external square used for stunning open-air events, a pair of galleries for temporary exhibitions and a main hall reserved for official events. It opened in 1984 and is named after the famous Algerian poet who wrote the words to the national anthem. Would you want to miss it?

Au Bon Gibier has made perfect combinations its calling card and we're not just talking about the food: the décor is a perfect blend of picturesque, rustic style and surprisingly modern touches. The menu offers succulent meat and fish dishes complete with show-stopping presentation: seafood-filled bureks, fried red mullet, duck served with orange, roasted baby goat, chicken with cabbage, grilled salmon and endless options that are anything but conventional, in keeping with the ethos of the restaurant. An extensive range of national wines is also available. The dining hall is very elegant and there is a charming, romantic atmosphere, thanks to the soft lighting, and a pretty terrace. It is the ideal spot for a well-deserved treat.

Attention all meat lovers! This restaurant will become one of your favourite places in the city. Le Tyrolien is known for its huge central grill, where its friendly owner cooks up some of the best cuts in Algiers. What's more, you'll feel right at home here as there aren't any tables: everyone stands at the bar that runs around the grill, which is great for striking up conversation with the other guests. Being such a small place, where there is barely room for twenty people, you'll often find a mix of locals and tourists. The menu includes chicken, lamb, vegetable brochettes, sausages and appetising salads that are served on the house. Simple, but really tasty. Another unusual feature is that Le Tyrolien serves beer and a selection of the best national wines, which are always hard to find.

The country's most popular meat
Algeria acts as a bridge between two very different culinary worlds, allowing it to combine the best of Mediterranean cuisine with the exquisite tradition of Arabic gastronomy. The result, as you can probably guess: marvellous. With the absence of pork for religious reasons, lamb has become the star ingredient in many national dishes. Not only eaten with couscous, it is also found in other typical dishes: lham liahlou, a delicious, slow-cooked lamb stew with cinnamon, plums and orange blossom water; chakhchoukha, where the lamb is mixed with bread, tomato, onion, chickpeas and other vegetables; or the well-known mechui, which is spit-roasted lamb. Trying at least one lamb dish during your time in Algiers is a must. Whichever you choose, you're in for a treat.

The national dish
Tasty, appealing and cheap. There is no better way to describe the star dish of Algerian cuisine, it's bound to be love at first bite. This is the national dish par excellence. Couscous is made from semolina (granules of durum wheat) that, after being steamed for several hours, becomes light, fluffy and enriched with an unmistakeable flavour marked by spices. Therein lies the essence of an excellent dish. The ingredients that couscous is served with give each dish a unique character and allow the chef to make their own personal mark: lamb, chickpeas, chicken, vegetables... Indeed, it's been said that no two couscous dishes are ever alike. Some people eat it with a spicy red sauce called harissa, made from red peppers, garlic and olive oil, for an even more intense flavour. Ready to tuck in?
Dar Hassan Pacha
A huge mansion in the Casbah that was home to the French colonial governor.
Spectacular interior design
A stone's throw from the Ketchoua Mosque, this is one of the biggest and most evocative mansions in Algiers; a real symbol of the luxury and good taste of the former governors. Dar Hassan Pacha was finished in 1791 and is made up of various rooms arranged around a large patio, characterised by very elegant Moorish decoration and show-stopping blue and white tiles. The arcades and columns surrounding the rooms complete the stunning layout. The roofs are also very ornate and the façade boasts various stylised lancet windows. During the colonial era, the building was modified in the architectural style to become the official winter residence of the French governor and its name was changed to the Winter Palace. In recent years, intensive restoration work has been carried out to restore the palace to its former glory.
Villa Abd-el-Tif
A palace that combines architectural beauty with lush greenery and the sound of water.
An exquisite sight
A small yet very beautiful palace, built in the 18th century. Over the years, it has had numerous uses, including a residency for artists, until becoming one of the cultural centres par excellence of the capital. Today, thanks to its grandeur, it is also a national heritage site. The Villa Abd-el-Tif is an elegant, stately home built around a central, square patio surrounded by galleries of braided arches, colonnades and a terrace. Marble decoration, tiles and floral motifs are common throughout the building, setting a spectacular scene that is shared by trees, greenery and the sound of water, which is so typical in Arabic architecture. The porch and entrance are especially magical, giving a hint of what's in store inside the complex. You'll love it!
Palace of the Dey
Pretty rectangular patio surrounded by three floors of arcades, a mosque and a gunpowder magazine.
Remnants of architectural splendour
Initially built as a military fortress, this palace ended up as the luxurious and elegant home of the last deys (governors) of Algiers, serving as a perfect example of the past splendour of the city. Located in the highest part of the Casbah, the Palace of the Dey was built in the mid-16th century. Although it is currently under restoration, you can still make out the pretty architecture that makes it one of the great architectural relics of Algiers. It is made up of a central, rectangular patio surrounded by three floors of symmetrical arcades, a gunpowder magazine and a mosque; these are the remains that have survive the passage of time. It has also borne witness to more recent historical events, as the site of the famous "fan affair", which sparked the French military expedition that led to the colonisation of the country.
Martyrs Monument
Its three enormous palm leaves honor the fallen in the War of Independence.
A symbol of the capital
Without a doubt, we are talking about one of the most spectacular buildings in the city and one of its most visited places, even by heads of state from other countries. The Monument of the Martyrs is made up of three immense concrete plates in the shape of palm leaves that rise towards the sky as a sign of respect and homage to those who fell during the Algerian War of Independence; their curvilinear shape allows them to touch in their central part. In the lower hole left by the structure, there is an eternal flame that the Algerian army is in charge of guarding day and night, and at the foot of each palm it is possible to see the statues of three soldiers representing different stages of the conflict. It was inaugurated in 1982, coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the liberation, and its height of more than ninety meters allows it to be seen from almost any part of the capital.

You'll be lost for words
One of those places you simply have to visit when in Algiers. The stylised lines of this stately post office form the best example of Neo-Mudéjar style in the city, resulting in a magnificent combination of tradition and elegance. In addition to its bold white façade and walls, its delicate layout is also bound to impress, mixing arches, large windows and balconies. And it's not only the outside that's remarkable, the building is home to one of the city's best kept secrets: its ceiling, which will leave you speechless. Built in 1910, following the designs of the architects Voinot and Toudoire, it was created to house the city's main post office and continues to do so today. Try to visit Sunday to Thursday so you can go inside, as it is only open during normal office hours.
Grande Poste Square and Sofía Square
Aim to visit these squares at sundown, the views of the Mediterranean are spectacular!
Nerve centre of the city
These two squares, which are very close to each other, form one of the nerve centres of Algiers. Located at the heart of the city, they are popular with locals and tourists alike, as the large hotels are just a short walk away and it is very common to cross them at the beginning or the end of a tour of the city. They are surrounded by large buildings, some governmental, and are home to pretty fountains and gardens, making them the ideal place for a pleasant stroll. You'll also find various statues in these squares that commemorate the independence of the county, the famous flower clock and Le Grande Poste d'Alger, which is probably the most eye-catching building in this part of the city. And the best thing? The beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea that can be enjoyed from these squares, a real treat for the senses. They are especially magical at the end of the afternoon, thanks to the beautiful lighting.
Sacred Heart Cathedral
A church characterised by its modern lines. Very recent: built in 1956.
Originality above all else
Another Catholic bastion of the Algerian capital; a building that is anything but ordinary. The Sacred Heart Cathedral filled the gap left by the Muslim reconversion of the Ketchaoua Mosque; a very modern church, it was built in 1956. Its design is nothing like the traditional idea of a Christian church; on the outside, it looks more like a tower at a nuclear power plant than a cathedral, making for a truly original place of worship. It was designed by the architects Paul Herbé and Jean Le Couteur. Its dimensions are also pretty impressive: the dome stands 25 metres tall and the nave is 52 metres long. Its numerous stained-glass windows, bathing the church in colour and light, and the slanting lines of its pillars are two of the most impressive features. It is located in the upper part of the city.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Africa
Built in the Byzantine Revival style, its eye-catching, wonderfully colourful interior is a sight to see.
Referential Catholic church
Although it might seem unlikely at first glance, this is a Catholic place of worship, one of the architectural legacies of the thirteen decades of French rule in Algeria. This Basilica was built following the designs of architect Jean Eugène Fromageau, who chose a Byzantine Revival style, making its most impressive elements the various domes that crown the church. Inside, the choir is especially interesting as it faces south east and not east, as was tradition, and the large fresco behind the choir is not to be missed. The range of colours is also one of the star features. The church took forty years to build and it didn't open to the public until 1872. It is home to the image of Our Lady of Africa, after which the church is named, a bronze statue of uniquely dark hues.
Ketchaoua Mosque
Arabic, Ottoman and Byzantine: an architectural mix that won't leave you indifferent.
Stunning combination of styles
Dating from the 17th century, this much more modern mosque is one of the most iconic buildings in the Casbah. Thanks to its stylised and well-balanced combination of Arabic, Ottoman and Byzantine architectural styles, it is certainly quite unmissable. Its façade is no less impressive, boasting a portico with lofty arches and black-veined marble columns, in addition to the 23 steps leading up to the main entrance. The entrance is flanked on both sides by two large octagonal minarets, setting a very majestic scene. Most interestingly, it was converted into a Christian church, the Cathedral of St. Philip, during the French rule and it wasn't until 1962, the year of independence, when it was changed back again to a mosque. Thanks to its prime location, it is one of the best starting points for a stroll around the city centre.
The Great Mosque of Algiers
Built in the 11th century in the almoravid style, it is the oldest temple in Algiers.
An impressive building
We have arrived at the city's most important temple: it is not only the oldest but also the largest in Algiers. The Great Mosque, called Djama’a al-Kebir in Arabic, was built in the 11th century in an unmistakable almoravid style, where its elegant poly-lobed arches, which are so typical of that era, combine with the traditional double tiled roof to create a true masterpiece of urban architecture. New decorative elements have been added over the centuries, while other features have been carefully restored to reflect the Mosque's former glory. The intense white of the façade is broken by just a few blue motifs on the upper section, creating an overwhelming sense of sobriety; the same can be seen on the minaret, rising proudly above the rest of the building. Interestingly, the complex as a whole is wider than it is tall. Inside, the mosque is decorated with ceramics and wood.
