Special cases

Flights operated by Iberia Regional Air Nostrum
On flights operated by Iberia Regional Air Nostrum, we will collect and return your bag weighing up to 10 kg at the aircraft door to transport it in the hold due to space constraints.

Flights operated by other airlines
Hand luggage rules may vary if your flight is not operated by the Iberia Group. If you bought your ticket with Iberia but the flight is operated by another airline , the rules of the operating airline will apply. Check their conditions before travelling.

Connecting flights
If you are travelling on connection with different airlines, the hand luggage regulations may vary for each one. Check them before travelling and comply with the most restrictive policy to avoid unexpected issues.

Medical and mobility devices
You may bring walking sticks, walking frames, CPAP machines and other foldable assistive devices, which must be stored in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. If they do not fit in the cabin or you do not need them on board, we will transport them in the hold.

Musical instruments
You may travel with your guitar or another musical instrument, provided it does not exceed 30 x 120 x 42 cm, as your sole piece of permitted hand luggage. Depending on the dimensions, you also have the option to purchase an extra seat so it can travel with you.

What to do if
My hand luggage exceeds the permitted dimensions or weight
It will become checked baggage. If your fare includes it, check it in free of charge at the check-in desks. Add it in advance via iberia.com or the app to get a lower price than at the airport. Do not take it to the boarding gate: you will avoid surcharges and delays.
I have received a notice to check in my hand luggage
If your flight is very full, we’ll let you know by email or WhatsApp. In that case, drop off your bag weighing up to 10 kg free of charge at our check-in desk before going through the security control, or at the boarding gate, as specified in your message.
I am travelling on a flight operated by Regional Air Nostrum.
Make sure to carry with you all your essential items or anything you may need during the flight. You must hand in your baggage weighing up to 10 kg at the aircraft door so it will be carried in the hold, and it will be returned to you at the same place when you disembark.

Economy Class and Premium Economy Class: baggage allowance is up to 10 kg.
-
Business Class: baggage allowance is up to 14 kg.
Can I take a backpack and a suitcase into the cabin?
You may take a backpack and a suitcase as hand luggage, provided that the combination of both items complies with the permitted dimensions and weight.
-
A suitcase as hand luggage: The suitcase must weigh no more than 10 kg and may not exceed 56 x 40 x 25 cm in order for it to be stowed in the overhead compartment.
-
Your backpack as a personal item: It must not exceed 30 x 40 x 15 cm to allow it to be placed under the seat in front.
You can switch the roles (for example, take a large backpack weighing up to 10 kg in the overhead locker and a very small cosmetic case under the seat) or bring other items, as long as each piece of luggage strictly complies with the regulations.
What happens if my hand luggage doesn't fit in the cabin?
Because of the limited capacity of the overhead compartments on the aircraft, when flights are full, it may not be possible for all hand luggage to be accommodated on board.
To stay one step ahead of this situation and ensure your comfort, we are taking proactive measures to improve our service:
-
We will notify you in advance: If we anticipate that cabin space will be insufficient, we will send you a WhatsApp or email before your flight to inform you that your hand luggage will need to travel in the hold.
-
Check in your hand luggage: You must check in your suitcase weighing up to 10 kg at the check-in desks before going through the security control. This service will be free of charge for you, no matter what type of ticket you have.
-
Travel more comfortably: By dropping off your luggage at the start, you'll avoid carrying it around the airport, pass through security control more quickly and board the plane with complete peace of mind.
-
Prepare your luggage at your leisure: By notifying you in advance, we avoid having to take your suitcase away hurriedly at the boarding gate. This way, you will have time to close it securely and remove what you consider essential or valuable (documents, money, medication or electronic devices) to carry with you in your personal item.
What happens if my hand luggage exceeds the permitted dimensions or weight?
If your hand luggage exceeds the permitted limits, it will not be allowed to travel with you in the cabin and you must have it checked in so it can be transported in the aircraft hold; a checked baggage fee will apply.
To avoid issues at the airport, follow these steps before your trip:
-
Check your fare: See if your ticket already includes free checked baggage in the hold.
-
Save by purchasing online: If you need to add additional baggage, do so in advance via iberia.com or the app. Online fares are much cheaper than those at the airport.
-
Go to the check-in desk: If your suitcase exceeds the size limits, go directly to the check-in desks to check in before going through the security control.
How should I carry liquids in my hand luggage?
You can bring liquids into the cabin of the aircraft as long as they comply with international airport security regulations:
-
Total limit: 1 litre per passenger.
-
Individual containers: Each liquid or cream must be in a container with a maximum capacity of 100 ml (larger containers are not permitted, even if only partially filled).
-
Transparent bag: All containers must fit together inside a single closed, clear plastic bag (ziplock or similar) measuring approximately 20 x 20 cm. This bag does not count as an extra piece of luggage in your hand luggage.
-
Exceptions: Food or milk for infants (the amount needed for the journey), liquid medicines or syrups (it is recommended to carry a doctor's prescription), and purchases from Duty Free airport shops (sealed in their official security bag).
Store the bag of liquids at the top of your hand luggage. You must take it out and place it in a separate tray when going through the security control if requested by airport security staff.
Which items from my hand luggage do I need to present separately at the security control?
To help you comply with European Union airport regulations and speed up your passage through security, you must present the following in separate trays:
-
Your jackets and coats.
-
Your laptops and other large electronic devices.
-
Your bag containing liquids and gels (max. 1 litre in 100 ml containers) should only be presented separately from your hand luggage if requested by airport staff.
