Inagua Natural Integral Reserve
Many of the endemic species of flora and fauna rest here.
A long list of natural treasures.
The mountains of Inagua, Ojeda, and Pajonales at one side, and the Mulato and Mogán ravines to the other, mark out the area of this beautiful spot where Canarian nature reaches its maximum splendour. The Reserva Natural de Inagua is the home and refuge to many of the most characteristic species of fauna and flora, and the indigenous pride of the Canary Islands: for example, its mountains are inhabited by Canarian pine trees, which are endemic of the region, and these trees give balance the island's surface and allow to maintain one of the natural water springs which waters the island. Other typical endemic families from this reserve are Gildama and Helianthemum. You'll also find other species of animals here such as the woodpecker or the blue chaffinch, which is a protected bird in danger of extinction, and very special from the Canary Islands. You'll find this natural wonder in the southeast of the island, which is a real gift for your senses.
Tamadaba Natural Park
If you want to understand Canarian nature, this is the ideal enclave to do so.
A pine forest of the XL variety.
We return to the north in order to enter into one of the two natural parks that Gran Canaria has. The park's main characteristic is that it is home to a very steep orographic system with valleys, peaks, gulleys, and spectacular shapes created by natural elements of erosion, which is a special feature that has served to attract the attention of two aspects: on the one hand, the spectacular Roque Faneque, which is a cliff of more than 1000 metres tall that stands almost vertically over the ocean; and on the other hand, because this park features the largest pine forest on the island, which is perfectly maintained, and where birds come to make their nests and then leave the area to head for the African continent, due to the change of temperature. It's also home to unique species of Canarian wildlife. Parque de Tamadaba is located a little more south of the town named Agaete._x000D_
Roque Bentayga
It was the enclave where ancient tribes came to pay homage to their gods.
The island's mythological axis.
A mysterious, enigmatic place which was deified by ancestral tribes. A distinct enclave from the others. With these few words, we could define Roque Bentayga that hides a large part of the insular mythology, so it's no wonder that this area was the island's origin; a point where you'll have the chance to know and observe cult ancestral places in first person, and a place where ancient civilizations used to come and pray to the gods, in order to help and protect them. Thanks to the Centro de Interpretación, which was recently renovated and located at the base of these steep and well-known cliffs, it's possible to make out different manifestations of cave paintings and comprehend why these three gigantic rocks came to be the spiritual epicentre of Gran Canaria. You'll also find one of the island's most spectacular viewpoints.
Port of Las Nieves
Peaceful and inviting with incredible sunsets. This describes the town of Agaete.

Looking at the neighbouring island of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the edge of the island's northeast coast: this is exactly where you'll find Puerto de las Nieves. Dozens of boats mix here every day, from those which dock at the port after a day's fishing of Atlantic bluefin tuna, to the boats that go out to sea to work, without forgetting the small boats that take visitors to show them the beautiful surroundings. The port is located in the north of Agaete, a town which is ruled by tranquillity, and where the kindness of the local people stands out as a distinctive feature of the town. A recommendation? The unbeatable views that the sun creates over the cliffs towards the evening. In addition to the traditional boat excursions, you must go and visit the famous Playa de Las Salinas in Agaete, which is recognizable due to its oval shape and its average width of five metres, making an ideal place to unwind from stress, noise and problems.

Great archaeological interest.
It's as if you were transported back in time to completely isolate yourself from the world outside. The Barranco de Guayadeque is responsible for geologically separating the towns of Agüimes and Ingenio, a natural border that keeps a thousand and one secrets, and offers visitors some incredible panoramic views over its fifteen-kilometre stretch. This valley isn't only characterized by accommodating beautiful indigenous vegetation with multiple endemic species, it's also characterized for being an important archaeological point, as a large part of pre-Hispanic objects come from here, which can be appreciated in the Museo Canario, located in the capital of the island. Besides this, an interesting point is that a multitude of caves are still preserved, which have been bored are formed in the rocks, and have been inhabited as people's homes, rural houses, or even restaurants that preserve the indigenous essence, and turn your visit into what will surely be a new experience for you. Well worth visiting.
The Bandama Caldera
A very beautiful ecosystem with spectacular pre-historic engravings.

La Caldera de Bandama, located in the north-east of the island near the town of Telde is one of the most stunning points on the island. There are three reasons for this: on one side, its due to the spectacular mountain of volcanic origin which is raised to more than five hundred metres above sea level, and has turned into one of the most characteristic geological occurrences on the island. Considering its altitude, it's no wonder that it's visible from different points of Gran Canaria. On the other side, it's because you can find a large part of the most important pre-historic engravings of the Canarian archipelago inside its cavities that bear witness to, and show us how the first civilizations were that populated the area. Lastly, it's due to the wild and desert-like character of the area that allowed to create a unique and special ecosystem which is of great interest for nature lovers. So, there's no lack of reasons for visiting this marvellous enclave, right?
The Historic Centre of Teror

Declared as a "Conjunto Histórico Artístico" (historical-artistic group) in 1979, many Canarians travel to this place on the island at different times of the year, as the Basílica a la Virgen del Pino is located here which is the patron saint of the island. As we saw earlier, it's the epitome of religious construction in Gran Canaria, and even the architecture alone is well worth a visit to the town. But the excursion mustn't end here: it's still necessary to go round the square of Plaza de Teror, and go down towards Alameda passing by the row of balconies throughout the streets which are still paved, and show the colonial houses that are so typical on the island. It seems like time has stood still due to the walls. There are another two things in this town that you can't miss: on one side, you have the central Plaza Teresa de Bolívar where you can observe the statue of the liberator, Simón Bolívar; and on the other side, there's the beautiful and historical natural spring, which has become quite a symbol of the town.
The Sand Dunes of Maspalomas
A natural enclave of special beauty which is unique and changes every day of the year.

This place has the honour of becoming Gran Canaria's most visited natural attraction, and with good reason: these dunes are unique thanks to the winds that give them free reign around the southern part of the island, changing the way in which the sandy hills want to settle, so that the present landscape here is different each day of the year. This is where a good part of their charm lies. The sand dunes of Maspalomas start in the famous Playa del Inglés, and together with Palmeral and La Charca, forms a declared special nature reserve of great ecological value. Its plant life and many of the birds that migrate to the area from the African continent are protected, so this gives you an idea of their great natural symbolism. When is it best to explore the sand dunes? You decide whether you'll go during the daybreak or in the evening, as the beautiful sights that the horizon creates can't be described with words: you have to experience them.
Port of Mogán
A calm and peaceful place but with endless sports and touristic alternatives.

Despite being one of the most important points on the island, the sea port of Mogán is ruled by peace and quiet. It's famous for its pedestrian streets with its little colourful houses, and walking along the narrow alleyways will make you feel especially privileged, as we are talking about an exceptional environment. This place mixes the sports area, in which you'll be able to distinguish all kinds of vessels, with an infinity of options related to tourism, such as the possibility of renting a boat to sail the bay and discover the beautiful hidden coves among the small surrounding mountains. Established in 1882 in Las Palmas de Gran Canarias' Doramas Park, this faux, traditional-style Canarian village is home to shops, a restaurant, and an art museum. In addition, every Sunday at 12 noon there are performances of folkloric music and dance such as the Sirinoque, Aires de Lima, and Baile del Trigo (look for the special ukulele-like instrument known as the timple). And the audience is encouraged to join in!

Alfredo Kraus Auditorium
The largest cultural events on the island take place in this distinctive building.
An emblem of modernity.
This symbol of island culture was built in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria between 1993 and 1997, turning into one of the most unique and modern buildings in the whole city. This was a project that was carried out by the well-known architect Óscar Tusquets, who came up with the design of a lighthouse that stands on the upper part of the building, so that it could be distinguished on the horizon; so much is the case that this has turned into the most recognized part of this auditorium. Some of Gran Canaria's main events take place in the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, such as the "Festival de Cine" (film festival), or the "Festival de Música de Canarias" (Canarian Music Festival), which are the island's biggest attractions. Inside the auditorium, its enormous hexagonal-shaped symphony hall measures more than 1,600 m² with a capacity of 1,650 spectators. The grandeur of its enormous window through which you can see the Atlantic, turns this auditorium into one of Spain's most spectacular concert halls.

There are many spots off the coast of Gran Canaria to enjoy the magnificent art of fishing, which is a hobby that will reel you in as far as turning you into a real fan. From Bañaderos at the north of the island, as far as Maspalomas in the extreme south, you'll find small ports where you can enjoy a lively and enjoyable day of fishing, but it's in the latter area where it's said that the island's best port is located. Not only does the famous blue marlin swim in these waters, there are tuna, bonito, and some barracuda with some luck. Boats continually set sail from this port, navigating visitors with experts of this noble art, and also for those who want to try casting a fishing rod for the first time. The best time of the year for finding these fish is between May and November, but any month is good to enjoy the sea, the sun, and a relaxing day of fishing on the Canarian coast.

When the bottlenose dolphins are seen on the surface of the sea, it is time to head there: it is this name that defines the dolphins' fins and the signal that indicates that the ceremony is about to begin. Boats depart from Puerto de Rico every day, and several times each day, that will take you to see up close the dances, jumps and applause of these friendly marine mammals, a sway of movements that will accompany you throughout the voyage. They are dances that seem as if they were rehearsed, and somehow they are. The calves imitate their mothers by attempting the same antics and, although they often fail, are still more conspicuous to watch than those of the older dolphins. Islander's sporting excellence.
It is undoubtedly the most respected and characteristic sport of the area that has been practiced for centuries throughout the seven islands. And yes, it's true: it was the way to elucidate conflicts with neighbours or land, where the opposing representatives of each party used to meet in the so-called 'terreros' (or sand circle) that were always made of sand. Nevertheless, we're talking about a clean fight with numerous rules involved so that they make a sport and a show that's worth watching. Proof of this is that both opponents shake hands at the start to show the tradition and nobleness that it is characterized by. The teams are made up of 12 fighters, and the confrontations are in pairs with the winning group having the least participants knocked over. Many of these fights are held on the beaches, which makes them a real show at the seashore. You can't miss it!

From the Agaete area to the port of Mogán or Arguineguín, or in other towns like Telde, the mix of rocky and sandy seabeds allows you to easily appreciate the fauna that lives in the Atlantic, which turns itself into a real spectacle. Some of the shipwrecks are more than fifty metres deep, making an exceptional underwater landscape, and the typical rocks have a very interesting variety of flora that recreates a stunning and beautiful palette of colours. For all these reasons, there are many coastal points where they offer courses for diving, free diving, snorkeling, and so many other underwater activities - a sport with which you'll end up falling in love.

To relax by the sea, or to walk along more than 12 kilometres of the coast isn't the only attraction of Gran Canaria's beautiful beaches. Since many years ago, water sports have turned into a big attraction of the island, thanks to a perfect temperature during the whole year and gusts of wind that allow for an unbeatable practice of specialties like surfing, windsurfing, bodyboarding, and for the most adventurous - kitesurfing, which has many followers. Athletes from all over Europe come here occasionally because they are attracted to this natural paradise. And don't worry if you have never ridden the waves because there are academies that offer courses for beginners, as well as shops just about on every beach for renting equipment. Naturally, there are areas in Vargas and Pozo Izquierdo, which are the most recommended for practicing your aquatic baptism.
The Vegueta District

Three words are suffice to define the historic relevance of this well-known district of Las Palmas: everything started here. It was in Vegueta where Las Palmas de Gran Canaria started to rise as a city, being the capital of the island, and the best place for getting to know its real spirit. Founded in 1478, its narrow and hidden corners speak for themselves while they offer the opportunity of feeling how life was like in first person more than five centuries ago. Many of the original buildings in this historic centre are still preserved, and here you'll also find the most emblematic monuments of the capital such as the Catedral; the Plaza del Espíritu Santo; the Museo Canario; Casa de Colón, and the Casas Consistoriales. A blast from the prehispanic past
Established in 1879 in the old quarter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the Museo Canario offers a fascinating look into the culture of the Guanche, the inhabitants of these islands before the Spanish arrived beginning in 1402 (originally from nearby North Africa, they were related to the Berbers). On display are artifacts including ceramic vessels, religious idols, bone and wood tools, as well as mummies and a reproduction of the Painted Cave in the town of Gáldar, 40 minutes west of here. _x000D_

Amid the historic charm of Las Palmas' old quarter, Canarian specialities on display.
As Las Palmas de Gran Canarias' most historic district, Vegueta provides a charming backdrop to the outdoor crafts market held every Sunday 9 am to 2 pm in cobbled Plaza del Pilar Nuevo behind the cathedral. More than three dozen vendors sell Canarian specialities such as lace, linens, leatherwork, earthenware (some with pre-Hispanic Guanche designs), jewelry, and clothing, along with produce and foods such as honey, jams, and baked goods. Add a handful of attractions for kids and live music, and you've got a very nice way to spend a morning!
The Wines of Bandama
Volcanic soil surrounding a caldera is one of the secrets, and dozens of wineries welcome you to experience it.

The fertile volcanic soils around the dramatic Bandama Caldera just south of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have since the 16th century nurtured grapes yielding a wide range of crisp, aromatic, intensely flavoured wines, especially whites. You'll find some of Europe's oldest vineyards here, as they were never affected by the phylloxera that devasted the continent in the 19th century. And until fairly recently, production was for extremely local consumption, but a new generation of winemakers has been changing that, and several dozen wineries open their doors to visitors for tours and tastings. Also, the town of Santa Brígida is home to a very good wine museum. The Gran Denomination of Origin (DOP) covers various varietals, the best known of which is the Malmsey white, but others include reds such as Listán Negro and whites like Moscatel.

This doughty bastion helped fend off Sir Francis Drake and other marauders, and now teaches about the city and the sea.
A 16th-century fort with a 21st-century history museum
A later addition to Las Palma's defensive network, built in 1614. the Castillo de Mata, located in the Triana district next to Gran Canaria's Cabildo (administration headquarters) takes its name from the term "casemate", meaning a fortified structure from which weapons were fired. It was part of the old city wall, playing an essential role in warding off attacks from bucaneers and privateers including Sir Francis Drake. These days the fully restored stone structure also sports a modern annex, and visitors can learn more about the the fort's and city's history in the Museum of the City and the Sea; guided tours can be arranged by appointment. And if you're lucky you may also catch a historical re-enactment of the rough-and-tumble days of yore._x000D_

La Luz Fort

The oldest defender of Las Palmas
Built in 1494 on the coast of a small peninsula also home to the fishermen's quarter known as La Isleta, the doughty, square Castillo de la Luz has a decidedly medieval air about it, thanks to its thick stone walls, turrets, towers, and cannons, along with a wooden drawbridge. Gran Canaria's first defensive structure, the "Castle of Light" defended Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from pirates and military foes alike into the 19th century (though it did suffer grievously and was rebuilt after an attack by Dutch pirates in 1559). After more than a century of abandonment it was restored in 1969 and again in 1998, and today in addition to walking its keep and ramparts, visitors can also take in the collection of the Martín Chirino Foundation of Art and Thought, showcasing the abstract sculpture and other works of the eponymous Canarian artist, a Las Palmas de Gran Canaria native who passed away in 2019.

Tasty Canarian seasoning.
There's no question that "mojo picón" (spicy sauce) is the most well-known Canarian recipe on a national and international level, and it's quite an emblem of the islands. And with good reason: it's a real gift for your taste buds. We're talking about a sauce that comes in a variety of ways, which varies in colour and taste, according to the ingredients. All share a spicy taste. For example,"mojo picón verde" (green spicy sauce) is made with garlic, oil, vinegar and coriander which give it that particular colour, while "mojo rojo" (red mojo) has a more intense taste including paprika, garlic, cumin, vinegar, olive oil, and peppers from the island, which are very typical dry red peppers from the area. There are also other varieties that are not so well-known but that doesn't mean to say that they are less tasty: there's "mojo de zanahoria" (carrot sauce) which is a little more milder, and "mojo plamero" (Las Palmas sauce), which is really spicy. Enjoy this excellent Canarian sauce in some of the restaurants with their traditional "papas arrugadas" (crinkled potatoes) and you'll be licking your fingers!

Besides, the massive turn out turns it into a real social event every week, especially for a small village which is more used to a quiet lifestyle. At the Teror street market, you'll find typical gastronomical delicacies of the area like cold meats, cheese, and their excellent sweets, religious symbols, textiles, and an outstanding representation of the best craftwork on the island, which is perhaps its most representative aspect that will surprise you the most. The Timple

This musical instrument is one of the most traditional folkloric elements of the region, which is used extensively and especially in the eastern islands, among which Gran Canaria is located. The timple is a small instrument (no larger than 40 cm), which is generally made up of five strings, and it's very characteristic due to its incisive and high-pitched sound. It usually forms part of the brass bands that liven up the parties of each village and city throughout the island, especially during summer. This is one of its distinguishing marks and they are still being manufactured in the traditional way by luthiers who are experts in shaping the wood, so that they result in sounding ethereal. If you'd like to see a timple up close, or even acquire one if you are a music-lover, it's easy to find them among the street markets in towns such as Tejeda or Telde.

It will never be known for sure if the cultivation of sugar cane was developed in the village of Arucas before it was planted in Cuba, but it is a fact that this inland town was one of the economical resources in Gran Canaria before the 19th century due to its cultivation. As a result, the place started to develop an important industry for distilling rum which still runs today, and at a very good pace. A peculiar contribution from Arucas was its honey rum, a traditional drink from the islands that is different from others as bees honey is added at the end of the distilling process, which reduces its proof and gives it an even sweeter taste. The Arehucas Distillery is the oldest and largest rum distillery in Europe that has been running since 1884, and it's possible to do a guided tour round the premises with free tasting included.
Canarian Bananas
It might sound like a myth, but it isn't: no banana can rival Canarian bananas.

Although it sounds like a cliché, we can confirm that it's true, with no fear of being wrong: Canarian bananas are one of the best gastronomical products in the region, and one of the world's most appetising. What you probably don't know is that the cultivation of this typical island fruit wasn't initiated by the people from the Canary Islands, it was the British who started to cultivate them during their stay on the island throughout the 19th century, while they developed their cultivation techniques. They did this so well that the quality of the banana reached international fame, and the cavendish variety is exported to a large number of places in the world. A typical Canarian recipe? Try the famous "plátano escarchado con gofio" (sugar coated banana with roasted maize meal), as a kind of breakfast and prepare yourself to start the day with energy. It's unmistakable extremely sweet taste won't leave you feeling indifferent.

The small town of Tejeda is located right in the centre of the island, making up a new contrast in relation to the famous coastal villages. In gastronomical terms, the town stands proud as the main place for some of Gran Canaria's most representative deserts, which are characteristic for conserving the tastes and aromas of the past. Tejeda is renowned for its traditional bienmesabe, which is a mixture of sugar, almond, cinammon and egg yolk that turns it into the perfect accompaniment for ice creams and cakes, or to simply taste it on its own with your finger. Unbeatable almonds grow in this area which is full of them, and these are used as a base for other appetizing creations such as "polvorones" (light, crumbly short bread) or "mazapán" (marzipan), which are still being prepared in the traditional, homemade way. Quality that is hard to beat.
To the southwest of the island in one of the most remote spots of Gran Canaria, you'll find this little sea village which is known for its mix of small colourful boats surrounded by steep cliffs at the other extreme. The king of the Village of San Nicolás is, without a doubt, the tomato, a fruit of excellent quality that's exported to numerous European ports such as those in the United Kingdom or the Netherlands, for example, and are then distributed around the continent. The qualities that this variety contributes to the Canarian vegetable garden are unique, and this is something that you can taste, but you won't be able to compare to any other tomato that you have tried before, as these have a particularly intense taste. The Village of San Nicolás also has indigenous livestock, which allows them to prepare delicious cheese. And if you're still hungry, we recommend that you continue a little further as far as Tasarte, which is another little coastal village where you can taste a very special octopus dish: la ropavieja de pulpo.

The towns of Santa María de Guía, Moya and Gáldar to the north of the island kept a secret until recently, which is a culinary treasure that has turned into one of the most cherished symbols of Canarian cuisine. It's no wonder, and even though they decided to give its origin away, and explain the way in which the milk is curdled and the use of the thistle flower as the star ingredient, the popular flor de guía cheese is still inimitable and unique in the world; so much so that it enjoys its own certificate of origin. It's made by mixing sheep and cow's milk, it has a creamy texture inside and has a slightly sour taste. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to find throughout the whole year, as it's during the months of July and August when the thistle flower is in a suitable condition, but don't hesitate in tasting it if you have the opportunity. You'll want to taste it again.

Together with the Museo de Arte Reina Sofía and the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, this cultural centre has the honour of being one of the three unique Spanish museums which are completely dedicated to contemporary art. Located in the very centre of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, this museum is characterized by explaining a large part of the archipelago's artistic reality, which is so different to the rest of the peninsula. The Centro Atlántico, which is part of its own premise of three continents, is a kind of artistic symbiosis which has been influenced by European, American and African cultures, forming a perfect map of Canarian heterogeneity. An authentic melting pot. Inside its collection, there is space for international artists such as Dokoupil, Roberto Cabot and Longobardi, in addition to native sculptural creators like Martín Chirino, Óscar Domínguez and Manolo Millares. The building is a neoclassical-style construction.

The mixture and diversity that shaped the Gran Canarian cultural identity find their biggest and best representation in this centre. There are more than 4000 m² divided into twelve rooms around two beautiful buildings made of stone and wood that guard one of the island's secrets: we're talking about the Santa Lucía de Tirajana area, which is an important agricultural area in the southeast of the island. Throughout the rooms of the Museo de la Zafra, it's possible to observe the main processes and materials that have given shape to the agriculture and stockbreeding in Gran Canaria, paying particular attention to the cultivation of the tomato and the water culture, which are essential in island farming. The museum has a plot of land on which different crops such as bananas, sugar cane, and prickly pears are exhibited in a demonstrative way. It's also worth mentioning the original 85-metre deep well which is still preserved with its machinery.

If you visit the Catedral de Las Palmas, take advantage of this: just in the side corridor of the church, you'll find the Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro in which is known as Patio de los Naranjos where the largest collection of religious art in the whole island nestles in its interior. The museum has five rooms in which you'll find some real historic treasures of scared art which has been stored in relation with Gran Canaria, either for having been elaborated on the land, or for having played an important role in its history. Especially remarkable pieces are the figure of Santa Catalina, for example, which is an effigy that came from the church of Puerto de la Luz from the 16th century, or various barroque carvings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Sala Capitular is a must-see which houses the traditional polychrome mosaic. The Museo Diocesano is linked to the cathedral through the Renaissance-style Puerta del Aire.

This building, which was built in 1786 has been home to a variety of uses throughout its history, ranging from a hospital to a prison, military barracks, and then resulting in this spectacular Centro de Cultura Contemporánea (Contemporary Culture Centre). This museum was opened in 2011 to make space for all the cultural disciplines and curiosities that have emerged on the island during the last decades, putting a special emphasis on the artists from the archipelago. It stands out due to its interesting temporal exhibitions which are distributed over two floors, but also for driving the cultural concern and initiative of the residents, by managing an extensive programme of conferences, art workshops, seminars and guided tours throughout the year. The museum is home to representations of theatre plays, modern music concerts and cultural conferences that turn San Martín into the best option for becoming acquainted with contemporary Canarian art.
Nestor Museum

A tribute to the great painter.
There's no question that the most outstanding cultural figure of Gran Canaria, at least when it comes to painting, is the artist Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, who is quite an idol on the island. The works by Néstor, as he was known, have an essential role inside the symbolist and modernist movements; so much so that many experts have considered them to be essential, in order to comprehend these vanguards. His creations appear scattered in some of the city's most important buildings, decorating the walls of the Pérez Galdós theatre, for example, but the most outstanding part of his work rests in this museum that was opened to the public in 1956, thanks to the private transfer of various families: throughout twelve themed-halls, you can enjoy his gallery of portraits, his masterpiece titled Epitalamio, or particular series such as Poema de la Tierra or Visiones de la Isla. Did you know that when Christopher Columbus set off towards America, he was forced to make a stop in Gran Canaria to repair one of his three caravels? This is only one of the curious things which explain the important role that Gran Canaria has always played in the route between Europe and America, and it's a relationship that the island has always wanted to maintain forever. Perhaps the best example of this is the Casa de Colón, a beautiful building located in the Vegueta district which was the old governors' residency on the island, and was visited by Columbus himself. The building's interior houses exhibitions of an empirical nature in which a large number of materials are exhibited that detail the island's history of the routes through the Atlantic Ocean, and there is also a display of an extensive collection of works that go through how the island evolved between the 16th and 19th centuries, tracing an accented line between the American continent and Gran Canaria.

Between the Barranco de la Virgen and the Barranco de la Madrelagua, the other side of the coin appears in Gran Canaria, beyond the coastal towns with beaches: areas of wild, desert and volcanic nature that are characteristic for their impressive landscapes. The municipalities of the interior have known how to survive a harsh and dry climate in a different way from the rest, and the MECIV, one of the most interesting museums on the island, is in charge of showing and preserving their deep-rooted customs. It is made up of various permanent exhibitions in which elements traditionally used for weaving wool, the creation of pottery items or a very complete craft section are shown. But, without a doubt, what will catch your attention the most is the explanation of the origin and preparation of gofio, the gastronomic product par excellence in the Canary Islands.
Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park
A route around the archipelago's real history in an exceptional environment.

Should you wish to know the real roots of the island, you mustn't overlook this cave, as we are talking about the best prime example of pre-Hispanic art that exists in the whole Canarian archipelago. Since its discovery, various prehistoric paintings were also discovered that decorate its walls and the remains of an indigenous area were found in the vicinity after arduous excavation work. The Parque Arqueológico Cueva Pintada means a true reconciliation with the cultures and civilizations that inhabited the island before the Spanish and European arrival of which so little is known until now, and its privileged geographical environment helps even more to recreate this precious journey in time. It's located in the very centre of the town of Gáldar in the north of Gran Canaria, and in an exceptionally beautiful place. An essential visit.

Epicentre of Canarian Culture
The exponential growth that the Island of Gran Canaria underwent during the 19th century meant that the centres which existed back then like Teatro Cairasco couldn't completely cover the eager public with cultural shows. This situation triggered the construction of a new theatre originally called "Tirso de Molina", but this was changed to its present name due to the big hit it had in 1901 due to the premiere of the play named Electra by Benito Pérez Galdós. The building attracts attention and not just from its exterior thanks to its exquisite mix of neoclassic architecture and lancet arches, it's also due to its meticulous art-nouveau style interior decoration. It's beautiful to highlight the beauty of the perfectly executed Salón Saint Saëns. Nowadays, it's the main building of the city's Opera Festival and it has an interesting programme based on concerts of ancient music, theatre plays, and other meetings with more modern content.

The Basílica de San Juan Bautista is located on the eastern part of the island in the town of Telde. The church is one of the reasons why the town was established because there was nothing around it when they built the primitive temple back in the 15th century. The village settlement started since the foundation of the church. This basilica was constructed using stone that was brought from Arucas, which is characterized by its dark colour and gives it that very special shape of Canarian religious architecture. The basilica houses two very valuable jewels inside the building: on the one hand, the main altarpiece, that was brought specifically from Flanders at the start of the 16th century; on the other hand, the Christ of Telde which arrived in the town around 1550 and was carved using an indigenous technique from Michoacán in Mexico is a singularity that makes it a unique image. _x000D_

Calm, peaceful, and serene; three synonyms that reflect a unique feeling which is expressed to perfection in this forum: peace. Having always been conceived as a crossroads, the most typical part of this square is the pavilion which is made of stone and was designed by Manuel Ponce de León. Its very special, covered fountain reminds us that the water network used to start from this point in the city. This square is surrounded by majestic buildings that were built during the 16th and 17th centuries and it's named after the Ermita del Espíritu Santo that stands at one of the sides. Easily recognizable due its two magnificent twin towers that watch the city from high above, the Catedral Basilica de Santa Ana is found located in the Vegueta district in which stand the majority of the island's historic monuments. One of its main characteristics lies in the time that it took to build, as the construction work had to be stopped on several occasions, which is something that allowed it to be home to such different styles such as gothic or neoclassic. The perfect place for admiring the most representative buildings with just one look.
The central square par excellence.
This square is one of the two main places in Las Palmas, and it's an exceptional point surrounded by the Casas Consistoriales, Palacio Episcopal, Museo Diocesano, and the Casa Regental, which are the most important establishments in the city. And if that weren't enough, it's also here where you'll find the Catedral de Santa Ana, which turns the square into a place that is particularly favourable for starting the touristic visit round the capital. Incidentally, if you ask any local to show you something characteristic about the Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana, they're sure to talk to you about the eight dogs that protect it: the eight statues have been there for so long witnessing the daily to-ing and fro-ing, and it's not known exactly how they appeared or how they remain captured there. The images of these dogs were turned into an icon of the district years ago, and the statues perform as the usual recreation area for young children who ride on their backs every day.

This church has the honour of having been turned into the first basilica that the Holy See named on the island, which allowed it to enjoy great affection among the residents. The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino is located in the town of Teror, and next to the chapel of San Antonio Abad, which make up the most important place for the Christian pilgrimage in Gran Canaria. Its construction began in 1514, and was erected as the first Marian church in the archipelago. It's highly recommended to stop outside the building and observe its beautiful exterior, on which you'll find some of the keys of typical Canarian architecture. Another one of its recognized connotations exercises the contrast of the white of the facades with yellow of the towers, which makes a combination that you'll see repeatedly throughout the islands, and turns out to be especially sculptural during the evening. _x000D_

The first Christian church on the island.
Vegueta is perhaps the most famous district in the city, which is always proud of keeping the island's origins; an island that was raised as the epicentre for the activity of pre-Hispanic civilizations before being conquered by the Spanish crown. Its orography provided some extraordinary conditions for founding settlements for both the cultivation of agriculture and livestock and for its own defence, which is why it was also the centre of the first Spanish settlements. This origin is especially marked by the chapel of San Antonio Abad, which is one of the first churches that the Castilian crown erected on the island. Its primitive building was constructed around 1478. This church was dedicated to Saint Anne and despite its small size, it became one of the most important churches on the island since then; so much, that the sign hung in its entrance announces that the very same Christopher Columbus used to come here to pray.

The great cylindrical guard.
We are talking about one of the great symbols of Gran Canaria, a cylindrical building that rises over the Atlantic and existing in anticipation of the tides that allow its access. Located on the shores of the island's north coast, Castillo de San Cristóbal was built in 1577 with the firm intention of defending the city, which was a mission it fulfilled for the first time in 1595 during a battle in which it was left practically destroyed as a consequence of the bombardments and invading attacks. But this didn't matter as it was rebuilt in 1638 and continued to form part of the defence of Las Palmas until well into the 19th century. From then, this castle which is also known as Torreón de San Pedro Mártir was responsible for keeping the memories of the old city alive and show that the history of the Canary Island was based on the quantity of some invasions which came from all parts of the world.
