Tourist guide: what to do and see in Montevideo
The city with the best quality of life in South America
You know you're in Montevideo when you walk through the streets and see that everyone is drinking maté. The capital of Uruguay is a hotbed of maté tea aficionados, as well as of tango and candombe, two dances on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Montevideo is said to be one of the cities with the best quality of life in South America, so although you might not find big flashy monuments, you will be able to breathe in that positive energy which, perhaps, comes directly from the River Plate. Smart Visit Planner: Organize your stay in Montevideo with the Intelligent Visit Planner and turn your trip into an experience full of emotions.

It used to be called "Central Park" but as it expanded and become more important it was given a new name: in 1929 it became known as Parque Batlle after the late president José Batlle y Ordoñez, who died that year and is commonly thought of as the godfather of modern Uruguay. The park is home to the Estadio Cenetario, another two smaller football stadiums, the Velódromo Municipal and a masterpiece by sculptor José Belloni entitled "La Carreta". The Parque Batlle is the ideal place for a long walk to reconnect with nature and get a good dose of fresh air. It is also a great location for a family day out.

Rambla de Montevideo
The most populated neighbourhood of the city has an irresistible charm. So much so that in its heyday, it was South America's answer to Biarritz.
Welcome to Biarritz!
This stretch of the coast forms part of the Pocitos neighbourhood, one of the most affluent in the city and the most densely populated, with close to 70,000 inhabitants. In its day, Pocitos was one of the first seaside resorts on the continent, becoming known as South America's answer to Biarritz. It has developed steadily since the early 19th century, thanks to its historic buildings, mansions and picturesque houses and today is home to a whole fleet of enormous buildings. There are always people on the Pocitos beach, whether in winter or summer when the locals flock here for football, volleyball and water sports. This neighbourhood offers a range of other attractions such as the obligatory photo at the classic Montevideo sign, the Museo Naval or shipping museum, the Castillo Pittamiglio building and the huge range of restaurants that line the promenade. There is no better way to explore this promenade than pedaling, unhurried and letting yourself be carried away by its charm. There are not a few agencies or hotels that rent bicycles, an experience in which you can mingle with the neighbors who come in procession to play sports, socialize with friends while sharing a mate or fishing. La Rambla is much more than a walk; it is a hotbed of personalities, it is the soul of the city.

In Montevideo there are more than 40 wineries registered with the National Institute of Viticulture
It is a place with a large number of wineries due to the favorable climate
Uruguay is distinguished by being in a privileged geographical position for the production of fine wines of different varieties. In Montevideo there are more than 40 wineries registered with the National Institute of Viticulture, most of them family-run. In addition to production, several wineries are dedicated to wine tourism, opening their doors to tourists from all over the world. Although different strains are produced, many of them internationally awarded, the flagship variety of Uruguay is tannat, a varietal wine with which commercial production began and with production volumes that exceed its place of origin. Throughout the year the wineries invite you to celebrate different traditional festivals: in March through the Harvest Festival to experience the harvest and treading of the grapes. In winter, between May and June, the festival of Lamb and tannat takes place, a classic pairing, or the festival of San Juan, with large bonfires and mulled wine.
