Any clothes shop needs to make an impact to survive, but the secret to a really successfully one is to build this impact to epic proportions. In this respect, La Habitación de Lolita is unquestionable the most eclectic shop in and around Vigo. It is just outside the city, in the nearby town of Cangas de Morrazo, which is just a short boat trip across the estuary. In and among its famously elegant and beautifully designed decor you'll find a variety of brands including Flamenco, Dolores Promesas, Flamenco or Jocomomola at more accessible prices than usual. The bags, dresses, trousers, accessories and jackets range from subtle vintage styles to much more daring models. It doesn't tend to stock that many sizes, in an effort to keep the clothes as exclusive as possible.

Vigo's connection with the sea isn't all about fishing; Galicia's largest city has a strong surfing scene with a lot of history and a special place in the locals' heart. As a long-standing feature of this thriving scene, Novalbos is the go-to shop for surfing equipment and for all things related to bodyboarding, skating, diving or snowboarding. Located in the O Carme neighbourhood, Novalbos has steadily kept up to date with the latest needs, tastes and trends, offering an ever-increasing stock to satisfy even the most demanding professionals. El Calvario

The heart and soul of Vigo.
If you want to try and blend in with the locals, this is definitely your best bet. This traditional working-class neighbourhood in the northwest of the city, next to the train and bus stations, is home to one of the largest shopping areas in Vigo. Totally pedestrianised and all in the open air, you'll be surprised by the peaceful, relaxed atmosphere and the traditional market, established in 1920 and seen as one of the treasures of the city. O Calvario has every kind of shop you could image: clothes, pharmacies, bazaars, jewellers, shoe shops and a large collection of traditional bars with a real sense of timeless charm. Nearby, you'll find the church of the Immaculate Conception (Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción) which is also known and "the church of the peaks" for its peculiar design.
A Pedra Market

We are talking about one of the most visited tourist spots in the city, especially in summer and on days when cruise ships arrive, since it is located in the heart of the port area. Although the market and its establishments are currently closed, the famous atmosphere that exists in Calle de las Ostras is still intact: you will not find a better place in Vigo to savor its most typical dish. Its oyster vendor stalls are famous, opening them in front of you and having the opportunity to eat them on the go, but also its crowded terraces where you can savor this and other seafood delicacies, always accompanied by a good local wine and, in occasions, traditional Galician music. A perfect area to have an aperitif or to enjoy a promising romantic evening.
Rúa dos Cesteiros

Let the magic begin!
As one of Vigo's most enchanting streets, the Rúa dos Cesteiros has been a symbol of the city for decades. Thanks to the close and crucial link between the city, the sea and the fishing trade, the demand for wicker and straw products became so high that these artisans came to occupy this entire street, which even today has a unique, magical feel. Take a stroll along this narrow, cobbled street in the historical quarter of Vigo and you'll be amazed at the delicate baskets, hats, furniture and accessories which have all been lovingly made by expert hands. The goods are displayed inside the workshops, on doorsteps and in the street, creating a quaint and very picturesque vista. At the end of the Rúa dos Cesteiros, you'll find the Casa de Ceta; a small urban palace dating back to the 15th century.

This is not your usual shopping centre: Centro Príncipe is a totally open-air area, with a wide variety of different shops in the centre of Vigo. Known locally as the "golden mile", for its location between the Puerta del Sol and the Gran Vía street, at the heart of the city, it has everything you could possibly need: clothes, home items, jewellery, accessories and electrical goods, as well as plenty of bars and cafes for taking a break between shops. This all makes for a very popular and busy area, from dawn till dusk. Over the year, a range of events are organised to promote the centre, such as Vigo Shopping Night, when big discounts are up for grabs, the shops, bars and restaurants stay open until midnight and shoppers are treated to live music and food tasting sessions.
Feirón de Bouzas
Make a date any weekend to visit this market in a traditional fishing neighbourhood.

Looking for an alternative Sunday morning activity? You're in luck: the Feirón de Bouzas, as it is known by the locals, offers a day out with a difference. This traditional market has a huge number of stalls selling clothes, shoes, jewellery and top-quality local produce such as cheeses, freshly baked bread or vegetables. It is also perfect for picking up typical souvenirs of Vigo for friends and family back home. Finding the market is easy, but we recommend taking public transport as the area gets really busy at the weekend: you might struggle to find parking if you go by car. Once there, just go with the flow! The market is down on the seafront, at the heart of the Bouzas neighbourhood, which is a charming maritime area with plenty of bars and cafes for a sit-down after visiting the Feirón.
ABC de Bio – Organic supermarket
Even if you just pop in for a look, this ecological supermarket is well worth a visit.
100% organic produce.
Until April 2013, finding organic food in Vigo was a near-impossible mission as wholefood shops were practically unheard of in the city. Come the opening of ABC de Bio and this all changed: this brainchild of a local married couple only sells organically farmed foods. The main idea behind the shop is to promote produce that is totally free from chemicals and genetically modified organisms, respecting organic agriculture and cattle farming methods. It offers a wide range of food and related products: baby food, fruit, vegetables, meat and even cosmetics, home accessories and cleaning products. In addition, it also has a good selection of gluten-free produce, macrobiotic food and vegetable-based drinks.
ANFACO museum of the canning industry
An unusual journey through the history of one of the oldest industrial sectors in Vigo.

Fish and seafood have always been the two great icons of Galician cuisine and, as such, it wasn't long before a fully scientific approach was taken to the canning process, being one of the most important sectors in the region. The museum of the canning industry (Museo de la Industria Conservera) is probably the most unusual of all Vigo's museums, offering the chance to explore the over one-hundred-year history of the sector and to learn all about the canning process. Original documents, old cans, canning machinery and a large collection of photographs accompany you on this unique journey, where visitors have been known to share their own personal memories and experiences. The section on how the advertising of canned goods has developed over time is especially interesting.
Francisco Fernández del Riego collection

Vigo's best 20th-century art.
Francisco Fernández del Riego was an extremely influential 20th-cenutry intellectual who dedicated his life to Galician culture. He sponsored, for example, the Galaxia publishing house, which was highly controversial during the Franco years as it only published work in Galician. In 1995, he donated his artistic and bibliographical collections to Vigo, the city where he lived and with which he had a very special bond. The collection includes over 20,000 books and the correspondence he maintained with famous intellectuals during the interwar period, in addition to 254 works by distinguished artists such as Granell, Minguillón and Díaz Pardo. It also includes photographs and some of his personal belongings.
Liste ethnographic museum
A journey through local heritage taking in countless traditional objects and pieces of art.
The essence of Galician culture.
Customs, history and tradition: these three ideas form the backbone of the Liste museum. This leading centre of ethnographic heritage in Vigo offers visitors the chance to delve into Galicia's rich and varied culture. Established in what was once a detached family house, it has over two thousand objects related to all different aspects of the deep-rooted traditions of the region: artisan trades such as textiles or iron forging, carriages and wheels, light, folk medicine or the importance of rye crops. It also organises temporary exhibitions and educational activities for school groups. The estate surrounding the museum is home to various indigenous species of trees and also has a fountain, a former washing house and a hórreo; a traditional Galician building used for storing food off the ground to protect against the humid conditions.
Tui-Vigo Cathedral museum
This museum is home to pieces from the 14th and 15th centuries and boasts the only medieval cloister in Galicia.
Sacred art close to Vigo.
Vigo and Tui, which are around 30 km apart, form one of the Roman Catholic dioceses of Galicia. This border town with Portugal is the site of the Santa María Cathedral, its most famous building, which was originally built in the Romanesque style with a gothic façade added in the 12th century. It is one of the first works built in this architectural style in the whole of Spain. Inside, you'll find the Cathedral museum, which has some truly invaluable pieces on display, such as a ciborium from the 15th century and a 14th-century image of the Virgen Mary known as "La Patrona". In addition, the beautiful internal cloister, built in the gothic style, is the only remaining medieval cathedral cloister in Galicia. Despite having to leave the city, these sacred treasures make the journey to Tui well worth your while; it won't take more than 25 minutes by car.
Laxeiro Foundation
An institution that promotes the work of this great artist and 20th-century icon of Vigo.
Body and soul of the painter.
José Otero Abeledo rose to international fame working under the moniker "Laxeiro". He was born in the town of Lalín in Pontevedra, but his strong connection to Vigo has had his name synonymous with the city, where he died in 1996. The Laxeiro Foundation was set up in 1999 and both promotes and researches the work of this great artist who had such a unique impact on 20th-century Galician art. Located in the Casa de las Artes, the Foundation has a permanent collection of 62 of his paintings, including self-portraits, Carnavalada, Héroe and Maquinaria humana. In addition, it also hosts temporary exhibitions of his work on loan from collections outside of Vigo. The Foundation offers guided tours for an in-depth insight into Laxeiro's life and work, which we advise booking at least two days in advance.
Quiñones de León museum
An impressive collection of European painting in a beautifully maintained pazo.
First-class archaeology and art.
Highly recommended both inside and out, this authentic pazo (a traditional stately home typical of the region) is home to 29 exhibition rooms of the best 20th-century Galician art. The bottom floor of the Quiñones de León museum retains the ambience of the former stately residence, while hosting a permanent exhibition of the best European painting from the 17th and 18th century, which was inherited by the museum's patron Policarpo Sanz. These include, for example, pieces from the Prado museum in Madrid. The adjoining building is home to a select archaeological collection, with artefacts dating back to the Palaeolithic era. The grounds are famous for the beautiful gardens that surround the pazo and especially for the Sensory Garden; a space designed for visually impaired visitors to explore the essence of the garden through smell and touch.
Mar de Galicia museum
A centre dedicated to the wonders of the sea and its close link with the people of Vigo.
The DNA of any true Galician.
Aptly located on the Punta de O Muiño, next to the estuary, the Mar de Galicia museum transports visitors to a fascinating world with close ties to Galicia throughout the ages. It has a number of permanent exhibitions, with highlights including an exhibition dedicated to the art of ship building at the Vigo shipyards and another which explores the region's fishing industry, covering areas such as extraction, commercialisation and the different methods used to preserve fish products. It is also home to an aquarium with native marine species and an archaeological site. The building is on the site of a former canned food factory and was officially opened in 2002, thanks to the work of Galician architect César Portela and the Italian Aldo Rossi. Interestingly, the building turned out to be Rossi's only work in Spain.
Casa de las Artes
Local painting, photography and architecture all under one roof.
The nerve centre of regional art.
Known as the best place in Vigo for municipal temporary exhibitions of photography, architecture and visual art, the Casa de las Artes is a real symbol of the city, hosting works by some of its most famous artists. The bottom floor of the Casa de las Artes is home to the Pacheco Photography Archive, with over 140,000 historical photographs from 1879 to 1970 that show how Vigo has changed over time; the second floor is home to the Torras collection, established in 1998 after the donation made by this great artist from Vigo, with nearly seventy paintings; the third floor is the headquarters of the Laxeiro Foundation and Collection, a key figure in the history of Galician painting. Although the building was built in 1939, it only became a cultural centre in 1990. It is located in the historical quarter.
VERBUM
A unique insight into the world of communication.
The power of words.
Interactive is, without doubt, the adjective that best describes this unique museum, created by the architect César Portela. Directly opposite the Samil beach, VERBUM offers visitors the chance to learn about and experience all aspects of human communication. In fact, it is colloquially known as the House of Words. The content is divided into different subjects across the 81 units that make up the museum; cubicles equipped for exploring all forms of human expression: words, sounds, speech, languages, literature, writing and reading, with endless opportunities for hands-on interaction along the way. Highly recommended for children, where they can enjoy an unusual day out while learning through fun, interactive activities. The museum also has a room of very interesting temporary exhibitions.
Vigo museum of contemporary art: MARCO
This cultural temple is a must for all lovers of cutting-edge cultural expression.

Home to the most modern and innovative artistic creations in Vigo, this museum plays host to a plethora of creative, multi-disciplinary work, including cinema, visual art, design and architecture. The avant-garde is the body and soul of the MARCO museum, impressing even the most demanding visitors. The building, designed by José María Ortiz and renovated to house the museum in 2002, plays host to a range of world-class, temporary exhibitions all year round under the museum's superb cultural programme. One of the distinguishing features of the museum is its support of up-and-coming Galician artists. It also offers regular educational activities for school groups and specialist courses for artists. The museum also has an information centre, a multimedia library and a traditional library.
Cíes Islands
Beaches, flora and fauna of indescribable beauty and a fascinating natural environment.
Vigo's greatest natural treasure.
This set of islands is one of the most special places not only in Galicia but in the whole country; in fact, the Cíes Islands are already in the process of becoming a World Heritage Site. These three small islands (Monteagudo, Illa do Faro and San Martiño) at the mouth of the Vigo estuary are a real must for anyone visiting the city; sublime beaches, unparalleled natural beauty, flora and fauna unique to the islands and one of the richest underwater ecosystems on the entire Galician coast. The Romans actually called the Cíes Islands the Islands of the Gods. They can only be reached by boat from Vigo and, as visitors rarely want to leave, there is a small campsite if you choose to stay the night.
Portuguese Camino de Santiago
Complete the stage of this famous pilgrim route to Redondela and become part of this unique tradition.

Vigo is one of the main stopovers on the coastal Portuguese route, one of the many pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostela, which begins in Oporto and runs along the Atlantic coastline through breath-taking landscape. It is the only pilgrim route that goes through the largest city in Galicia. If you want to experience life as a pilgrim with your own two feet, you can start in Vigo and follow the route to the town of Redondela, where it joins the central Portuguese route, passing through the parish of Teis and the towns of Cabanas, Rande and A Formiga. This stage covers a total of 17 kilometres over largely flat terrain, making it ideal for most people without too much forward planning. Tighten your laces and get set to become part of a magical adventure!
Vigozoo
Exotic animals and a spectacular venue for a fun-filled family day out.

The smallest members of the family are guaranteed an unforgettable experience, meeting all sorts of animals they might not have even heard of before. Vigozoo is one of two zoos in Galicia and has around 400 animals from over 150 different species, including impressive creatures such as zebras, kangaroos, griffon vultures, yellow-bellied slider turtles or kinkajous. It has three aquariums, a planetarium with room for twenty people, a butterfly house full of beautiful species and a building known as the "Nocturama", which is home to nocturnal animals such as bats, bush babies or Eurasian eagle-owls. It is located on the A Madroa hill, around ten kilometres from the city centre, offering fantastic views of the estuary. From April to September, it is open every day of the week.

Vigo is the ideal place for action-packed holidays and adventure sports. Thanks to its unique location, there are countless possibilities out there for even the most intrepid holiday makers. How about an unforgettable hot air balloon ride over the estuary? You won't find the same views anywhere else in the city. Or a quad bike or buggy tour? You'll certainly feel closer to nature after an adventure like this. The possibilities are endless. Monte Galiñeiro is one of the best places in Galicia for trekking, rock climbing or bouldering, which is like climbing but without ropes. If you're no expert or you want to give your kids a taste of adventure, the As Travesas sports centre has a climbing wall with activities for the whole family. The Miño River is also a great place for rafting or kayaking.
O Baluarte beach
Tranquility in the environment and in its waters, ideal for nudists.

Baluarte Beach is popular for its tranquility, for being one of the favorite places for people from Vigo to rest without any noise other than that generated by their own thoughts. Of course, if you are going to step on it for the first time, remember to ask for 'Breadouro beach', one of the bars through which you can access it, and which is how it is known colloquially. It is also possible to get there from the A Fontaíña sandbank and from the O Vao wooden walkway. It is a cove of white sand with calm waters that is only 120 meters long and 45 meters wide, really discreet; So much so that it stands as another of the key points in Vigo for nudism and enjoying nature to the full. In its surroundings it has various places where you can quench your thirst on days of high temperatures.
Monte de O Castro

Where it all began.
Monte de O Castro is well loved by the locals of Vigo. Not far from the sea and at the centre of the city, this is one of Vigo's largest parks, offering breath-taking 360⁰ views. Brimming with greenery and maintained to a remarkable standard, the Monte de O Castro park can be reached by car or by foot. We strongly recommend the second option, stopping along the way to enjoy the delights of the city and the sea. The importance of this place lies in it being the very origins of Vigo. The site of this ancient settlement dates back to between the 3rd and the 1st century BC and can be visited within the park. You could also seek out the huge anchors of the Monument to the Rande Galleons, which commemorates the ships that were sunk during this famous 18th-century battle.

Stressful day at work? Exciting weekend coming up? An unexpected reunion? All paths lead to Churruca, Vigo's thriving party area. A trip to Vigo without coming here would be nothing short of criminal: the Churruca area offers countless possibilities for early evening beers or a quick nightcap to turn into an unforgettable night out, with live concerts and cultural shows practically every night, thanks to the variety of cultural events organised in the area. On Churruca street or others in the area such as Rogelio Abade, Irmadiños or Marín Codáx there is something for everyone, whatever your style: reggae, rock, electronic, pop, indie, etc. Brilliant atmosphere.
Vigo scenic trail
Views, green areas and archaeological ruins just a short walk from the city.
Captivating natural alternative.
At a total of forty kilometres, this is the longest of the many walking trails around the city. With easy access and fairly flat terrain, it's suitable for walkers of any age or ability who are keen to get out in the fresh air. The Vigo Scenic Trail not only provides incredible views of the entire city and the estuary, with one excellent viewpoint after another; it also takes in a series of archaeological ruins such as the Fragoselo petroglyphs and several prehistoric dolomens. As part of its unique appeal, this trail goes through eleven of the twelve forest parks in Vigo. If you prefer a shorter walk, you can just do smaller sections, allowing you to explore the secrets of the trail in greater detail.
Rodas beach
Awe-inspiring natural haven with calm waters suitable for the whole family.
The best beach in the world.
Once you've been to this beach, you'll know there's no need to go any further afield to swim in crystalline turquoise waters or stroll through white sands. It's no wonder that the Rodas beach was voted the best in the world by British newspaper The Guardian. Located on the Cíes Islands, just off the coast of Vigo, the beach is sheltered from strong currents, providing calm, still waters that are ideal for the whole family. The surrounding area is full of trees, running parallel to the beach. It is about one kilometre long and does sometimes get quite busy, despite its rather isolated location; however, this doesn't take away from its unique charm. A series of natural sand dunes just next to the beach complete the scene.
A Fontaíña beach
A natural treasure unspoilt by mass tourism, with white sands and crystal clear water.

It's no secret that Vigo has an impressive coastline, but this beach has managed to slip below the radar and is a world away from the typically overcrowded tourist spots. A Fontaíña, which is also known as 'La Sirenita' after a sculpture found on the beach, is a real slice of paradise: fine, white sands and crystal clear blue water against a stunning backdrop of natural beauty. It comes as no surprise that the beach has been granted the blue flag award for its quality and respect for the Environment. This shell-shaped cove is also a popular nudist beach; although by no means compulsory, no-one would blink an eye if you decided to partake. The A Fontaíña beach is a beautiful place where to relax and get away from the stress of everyday life.

The location of this restaurant is first class: with stunning views of the estuary, the Cíes Islands and the island of Toralla rivalled only by its proximity to the nearby beach. The Timón Playa restaurant also stands out for its exquisite food, such as monkfish in beer, sea bass with almonds or rice-based dishes with lobster or scallops, all prepared from scratch and seasoned to perfection, making for an unforgettable dining experience. Picadillo restaurant

Famous for having one of the most varied menus in the city, the Picadillo restaurant is an interesting option for escaping your usual dining routine, offering peculiar yet highly convincing combinations. Highlights include the salads, with a perfect balance of fruits, nuts and seeds, the filloas and the spectacular fish dishes such as the turbot. As for desserts, if you get the chance, the Cheesecake surprise is bound to put a smile on your face. An original range of tapas is served in the evenings and on Saturdays, which vary depending on the products in that day. Picadillo is always very busy, so we recommend booking a table in advance if you don't fancy having to wait.
Gálgala restaurant

Making a real name for itself on the restaurant scene, Gálgala is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Vigo. Its stone walls and antique furnishings create a perfect setting for savouring the mouth-watering combinations of vegetables, cheeses and nuts. The menu changes from time to time but you'll always find a selection of quiches (like the excellent spinach one), salads and desserts, which are a real treat at Gálgala. All dishes and drinks, including craft beer, are made from organic produce. A daily set menu is also available. At just a stone's throw from the town hall, this restaurant also has a small shop where you can buy organic and vegetarian ingredients to prepare your own meals at home.

Thanks to its central, busy location, this restaurant is a popular choice for pre-dinner drinks, so we recommend arriving early to get a table. Another word of advice: the drinks all come with very generously sized tapas! Both the food and the prices are unbeatable; you won't believe your eyes when you see the bill. If you fancy a quiet sat-down lunch, the daily set menu is also very reasonable and includes a drink, dessert and coffee.

As Esteban would say, the food here is based on "market cooking" or recipes that marry first-class local ingredients with the chef's unique creative flair. With highlights including the scallops with pâté and mango or steamed fillet of sea bass with Galician seaweed, this restaurant more than lives up to its famous name. Reasonably priced set menus are available throughout the week. Although this restaurant is not actually in Vigo, it is well worth a visit to the nearby town of Mos, just twenty minutes from the city centre.

The Galician architect César Portela is to thank for this magnificent building located between the Port of Vigo and the shipyards, offering stunning views of the city's estuary. With a capacity of nearly 1,500 people, the Mar de Vigo auditorium regularly hosts national and international stars, while putting on other events such as monologues or fun activities for the youngest members of the family. The acoustics and layout are second to none. Over the summer, open-air parties and concerts are held on the terrace against the unforgettable backdrop of the city's magical sunsets. The auditorium is in the same building as the city's conference centre.

Vigo's vibrant cultural scene ebbs and flows around the Novacaixagalicia cultural centre which, in addition to a theatre, has several concert halls, an exhibition space, an auditorium, a conference room and a library with 200,000 books. Opening in 1984, after an intense renovation project, it is located in the former García Barbón theatre, created by the Galician architect Antonio Palacios. The façade is designed in the Neo-baroque style. Its programme of events includes classical music concerts, plays, ballets and exhibitions by local, national and international artists. The centre receives an estimated 300,000 visitors each year.

The Reconquest of Vigo

The most important event of the year.
A real symbol of the city with its historical connotations, this is the most important festival of the year in Vigo. Over the weekend closest to 28 March, the city takes to the streets for three days to commemorate and recreate the popular uprising that ousted Napoleon's army in 1809, making Vigo the first place in Europe to pull off such an incredible feat. The festival takes place in the historical quarter of the city, which is transformed into one enormous food and craft market, where you'll see the locals dressed as soldiers, peasants or fishermen and women in celebration of this historic event. There is a continual stream of street performances, re-enacting the fights between the French and the inhabitants of Vigo, in an authentic journey back to the 19th century. In 2015, it was decided that the event should be extended over two weekends.
Los Mayos festival

An age-old tradition, whose exact origins remain a mystery, the Los Mayos festival takes place each year in the centre of Vigo to bid farewell to the winter and to welcome in the spring, in clear homage to Mother Nature. The streets are lined with multi-coloured flowers and filled with tradition Galician music, which keeps the party going all through the night, showcasing all the most characteristics elements of Vigo culture. The locals usually dress in white and sing songs celebrating the arrival of the new season while processions of floral monuments or people on shoulder-borne platforms file pass. The festival takes place in the second week of May.
Ensalle theatre

The Ensalle theatre is home to the best independent culture in Vigo. Opening in October 2003, it has just 81 seats and hosts performances with a very different narrative style from the classical world of theatre. Each season, the Ensalle presents the most avant-garde trends to hit the stage, which are eagerly received by audiences on the lookout for new experiences. It has two resident dance companies and hosts shows and plays all year, except during the summer months. It also offers specialist courses open to anyone with an interest in theatre productions. A fantastic option for a night of cultural delight.
Festivities of the Virgen del Carmen
It is the most relevant summer event in Vigo, a must-see.

Every July 16, Vigo dresses in its best clothes to honor the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of sailors and especially loved by its neighbors. It is one of those spectacles that you must see at least once in your life: all the boats are decorated with flowers and flags and accompany the ship carrying the statue of the Virgin in a maritime procession, filling the Vigo estuary with color, music and an endless number of feelings that sprout on the surface. Once they reach land, the virgin is carried on the shoulders to her parish. The two most significant Carmen festivals in Vigo take place in O Berbés, which has the honor of being the oldest in the city, and in Coruxo, where a procession begins on O Vao beach and runs through dreamy landscapes . If you visit Vigo during the month of July, mark this date in red on your calendar.
Bar Maispalá

Ask any local if they've heard of or been to Bar Maispalá and they're sure to answer with a resounding yes to both. You can bet on it, as this is one of the city's most classic bars. It has a distinctly bohemian, relax atmosphere which is perfectly in tune with the eclectic range of music, including rock, blues and indie classics. What's more, the incredible decor never fails to impress: impossible to put into words, you simply have to see it for yourself. Once inside, don't forget to take the mythical spiral staircase to the second floor, especially on a stormy night when it becomes the most romantic hideaway in the city. What's more, with its stone façade and bougainvillea-clad balcony, Maispalá is beautiful both inside and out.

Known for its classy alternative vibe, this club offers a unique mix of events from concerts to shows, performances or dance exhibitions. It has also put on shows for children and craft markets for the whole family, living up to its solid, eclectic reputation. Despite only opening at weekends, it packs in a range of live music and offers a long list of cocktails to begin the night in style. A drink or two at this club will turn into a night to remember, with a new surprise in store each time you come back. A word to the wise: if you're a fan of funk or black music, La fiesta de los maniquíes should be top of your list.

Co-cathedral of Santa María
You can't miss its legendary sundial and image of Cristo de la Victoria.
The biggest church in the city.
Popularly known as "La Colegiata", the Santa María cathedral is the most impressive example of sacred architecture in Vigo. Built in the neoclassical style (although the towers are a baroque addition), it has a rectangular layout with three naves and an altar flanked by two vestries. The façade has a simple, understated design, with the cathedral's famous sundial taking full centre stage. This is an unusual piece as it doesn't face south like most sundials. In addition, the cathedral is home to the famous image of Cristo de la Victoria which was created by the sculptor Sebastián Ucete and is the most revered religious sculpture in the city. It plays a leading role in Vigo's main festival when it is paraded through the city on the first Sunday in August to call thousands of locals to the most popular event of the year. You'll find the cathedral at the heart of the historical quarter.
La Puerta del Atlántico
Created by Silverio Rivas in 1991, the Puerta del Atlántico is tipped as his most accomplished work.
Emotional homage to emigrants.
Easily the most famous of his many creations, this sculpture pays homage to the Galicians who emigrated to America during the past century in search of a new life. In the form of an arch with two additional central features, this popular symbol of the city is carved in pink granite from town of Porriño in Pontevedra. Its impressive dimensions, at fourteen metres high and weighing a hefty 427 tonnes, are testament to the robustness of this structure, which stands in the Plaza de América at the end of the Gran Vía. Installed in 1991, fans of Celta de Vigo, the city's top football club, have adopted the monument as the site of their match-day celebrations.
El Sireno
An impeccable and invaluable piece of contemporary sculpture.
The symbol par excellence of the city.
Stood in the Puerta del Sol, in the heart of the historical quarter, this sculpture by Francisco Leiro is Vigo's most iconic image and is a real emblem of the city. "El Sireno" depicts a mythical character: half man (head and legs) and half fish (body) who stares impassively out to sea as if on permanent guard for the people of Vigo. Weighing in at fourteen tonnes, the sculpture is mounted on two enormous black granite columns, each a lofty thirteen metres high. Inaugurated in 1991, it soon became one of the most popular meeting places in the city. It was also the first public sculpture in Europe to be made from stainless steel.
Silverio Rivas sculptures

Silverio Rivas, another big name in Galician contemporary art, is the artist behind some of the most popular symbols of Vigo. These sculptures can be found all over the city centre; for example, you'll find Horizonte para o sol on the university campus and the Bicententario monument, a five-metre-high sculpture commemorating the 200th anniversary of the city, in a small square with the same name. Other works by Rivas include a methacrylate sculpture on the façade of the Casa Galega da Cultura and a sculpture in the Quiñones de León museum. His impressive career, over which his work has been displayed in various European countries, was acknowledged in 2015 with the Laxeiro prize; a prestigious award from the Foundation of the great Galician painter.
Self-portrait of Xoán Piñeiro
A commemorative bust in memory of the learned sculptor and master of Galician art.
Homage to the illustrious Galician artist.
Xoán Piñeiro is one of the most iconic symbols of 20th-century Galician culture. He lived in Vigo for many years, where his beautiful religious artwork has left a timeless mark in the churches of San José Obrero and Los Apóstoles. The bust can be found in Xoán Piñeiro square and, despite being a copy (the original is in the Alameda Soage in Cangas do Morrazo), this gift from the sculptor keeps him alive in the memories of locals and visitors alike. The square is also home to a commemorative relief by the artist Manolo Buciños. Since 1999, nearly two decades after his death, the Xoán Piñeiro Foundation has been on a mission to promote the work of this remarkable artist.
Los Bañistas
Enormous sculptures that depict a swimmer submerged in the city streets.

Installed in 1997, this piece by Francisco Leiro, a sculptor from Pontevedra, is one of the most recent additions to the city. "Los bañistas" (or "los nadadores" as it is commonly known) is a set of two large bronze sculptures that depict a professional swimmer at two key moments of a race. The first, at the Estación Marítima (Marine Station), shows the swimmer poised to dive into the water and the second, in the Praza da Estrela, captures the swimmer mid stroke, showing the sheer effort and determination on their face. You won't believe how big they are until you see them up close.
Simeón building
With a touch of the monumental, this building's stylised decorative features are second to none.
A modern gem in the historical quarter.
Also known as "Almacenes Simeón" as it was used by the Simeón trading company as a warehouse, it is an iconic example of Vigo's modernist architecture. What really stands out about this building is its lavish granite-carved decoration, with a mixture of floral and animal motifs such as roses and dolphins and a handsome cock standing guard from the very top. It also boasts an impressive blend of materials, mixing stone with wrought iron on the balcony railings, whose curving lines are typical of the art nouveau style. The project was initially led by architect Benito Gómez Román, but his brother Manuel took over the commission when Benito fell ill, finishing the building in 1911. Curiously, the face of an old woman on the first floor of the building is said to be the architect's mother, carved by his own hand.
Yáñez house
The façade of this architectural masterpiece never fails to turn heads.
A magnificent corner of the historical centre.
No other corner of the city is home to such an impressive display of compacted beauty. Built by the same architect as the "El Moderno" building, the stunning façade of the Casa Yáñez is a prime example of architectural historicism with notable neo-Gothic touches. Its most characteristic feature is undoubtedly the wooden chamfer in the form of a neo-Gothic gallery looking out onto the Compostela square, which is easily recognisable by its thin pointed arches. The eclectically styled front door is flanked by heavy corbels that support the chamfer. The building dates back to 1900 and was commissioned by Paulino Yáñez, a close friend of the talented Pacewicz who was one of the most famous civil architects of the time.
"El Moderno" building
Its characteristic façade symbolises the grandeur and history of the city.
Exemplary and unmissable architecture.
A real must, "El Moderno" is a building of unquestionable beauty born from the very best architectural eclecticism of the late 19th and early 20th century. Standing at the centre of Vigo's historical quarter, this masterpiece is the work of French architect Michel Pacewicz, who finished the building in 1902. For many decades, it was home to a hotel called "El Moderno" and the name has stuck to present day. The French influence on the building shines through in the elaborate design and the delicate balance between the multiple elements of the façade. To name but a few, the façade includes Corinthian columns, arches and garlands, topped by a dome and pavilion which add a sublime finishing touch to the "El Moderno" building. Its multiple balconies, some of which extend across several windows, also add to its unique charm.
Julio Verne monument
A seafront sculpture that pays homage to the French writer.

In one of the city's best-known sculptures, the famous author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea sits proudly at the heart of the Bay of Vigo; an area to which he dedicated an entire chapter of this literary masterpiece. On the 100th anniversary of his death in 2005, the Association of Female Business Owners of Pontevedra commissioned local artist José Molares to create this bronze sculpture and donated it to the city to keep the author's famous name alive. The sculpture shows Julio Verne calmly gazing out to sea while sat on the tentacles of a giant-squid-like sea monster. It can be found just outside the Montero Ríos gardens.
