-10% emissions per passenger
Improve the efficiency of our flights, by reducing grams of CO2 per passenger and kilometre travelled.
We are aware that we must spearhead the ecological transition of the aviation sector. That's why we have set ourselves a very ambitious goal: to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, as defined in the Flightpath Net Zero plan.
And little by little we're getting there. According to IBA,
in 2022
Iberia was the world's second best-performing airline in terms of reducing the CO2 output of its long-haul flights: down 17% per seat kilometre since 2019. Despite our efforts, there is still a long way to go and that is why we remain alert and continue to promote the advancement of the most modern decarbonisation solutions. In this sense, the IAG group has already invested more than $900m in various technologies, with the commitment to SAF being one of the main ones.
According to science and as established in the Paris Agreement, in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the increase in global average temperature should not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. However, the global average temperature continues to rise, so it is urgent to act decisively and achieve everyone's commitment to the 2050 goal.
It is therefore urgent to contain this warming, and, in order to achieve this, emissions must reduced to as close to zero as possible. As in 2050 there will still be some residual emissions, these must be extracted from the atmosphere through natural mechanisms, such as oceans and forests, but also with the help of new technologies, which allow us to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions.
Improve the efficiency of our flights, by reducing grams of CO2 per passenger and kilometre travelled.
Reduce our emissions by 20% in the coming years, both in our direct and indirect activity, that is, both in the consumption of fuel and electricity and in our value chain.
To achieve net-zero emissions from our activity and those of our entire value chain by 2050.
To meet our emission reduction targets, we have to make our flights more sustainable. In order to achieve this, we need to take certain measures such as the renewal of our aircraft, with more modern and efficient models; in-flight and ground operations that use less fuel; and strong support for the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
When you fly with us, we want to take you on planes that have the lowest possible environmental impact
Since 2019, all the electricity used in our buildings comes from renewable sources. And in 2021 we launched our self-consumption plant, which takes up the entire roof of our engine workshop in La Muñoza, which is next to the Madrid airport.
