Carriage of pets

Fly with the Iberia Group and bring your pet with you. It will either travel in the cabin or the hold, depending on the weight and breed.

Check in online and collect your boarding card at the airport desks when you show your pet's documentation. Our agent will also have to check that you meet the conditions of carriage.

Assistance dogs

There is a specific procedure for guide dogs. Please check the assistance dogs to find out how to fly with these animals.

Acceptance in the cabin

Dogs, cats, ornamental fish, tortoises and birds (except poultry and birds of prey) are accepted in the cabin provided you obtain prior authorisation from our Booking offices.

In order for your pet to travel in the cabin, you must provide documentation and the conditions must be checked at the check-in desk. One of our members of staff will check them and fill out the official International IATA form. Please bear in mind that if any of the requirements are not met, we can refuse transportation of your pet on board, as safety comes first.

  1. A maximum weight of 8 kg, including the carrier.

  2. The maximum carrier size is 45 cm (length) x 35 cm (width) x 25 cm (height), and the sum of these dimensions must not exceed 105 cm.

  3. The carrier must be robust and ventilated (at least 16% of the total surface of the four sides), with a safe, leak-proof base. On Iberia flights operated by Air Nostrum, the carrier cannot be rigid.

  4. Birds must be transported in a strong cage with a secure lock and non-spillable food and drink, and the cage must be kept covered at all times.

  5. Three small, lightweight animals of the same species can be transported in a single carrier. The price to be paid stated in the table is per carrier, not per pet.

  6. Pets travel with the owner at their own responsibility and must not cause inconvenience to passengers travelling next to them. The carrier is not allowed to be placed on a seat. Whenever the seat belt sign is on, it must be secured under the seat, at the passenger's feet. In addition, your pet must remain inside the carrier for the duration of the flight.

  7. We do not accept animals with special characteristics, e.g., a strong odour, etc., that may inconvenience other passengers and the crew.

  8. For safety reasons, you cannot travel with your pet in a seat next to the emergency exit.

Acceptance in hold

Iberia allows dogs and cats to travel in the hold, with the exception of snub-nosed dogs and dangerous breeds.

To transport your pet in the hold on flights operated by the Iberia Group (Iberia, Iberia Express and Regional Air Nostrum Iberia), you must present the necessary documents and meet the following conditions:

  1. The maximum weight allowed is 45 kg (pet + carrier).

  2. The carrier must comply with international regulations:

    • The carrier must be robust and have a secure locking system to ensure that it remains closed at all times.

    • It must be comfortable for the size of the animal, enabling it to stand in a natural position, turn round and lie down.

    • It must not have any exterior or interior damage that could harm your pet and it must have adequate ventilation.

    • The bottom must be waterproof and have a cushioning material or insulating layer to avoid direct contact between the base and the aircraft floor.

  3. The same carrier may be used to transport two adult animals accustomed to living together and weighing no more than 14 kg each, or three animals less than 6 months old and born in the same litter.

  4. If you are taking a connecting flight, the transit time between flights must be no less than 90 minutes and no more than 4 hours. Otherwise, you can't take your pet with you.

  5. Permission to travel with your pet will only be granted when all the flights in the booking have been confirmed.

Keep in mind...

  • Different types of planes have different limitations regarding the number and size of pet carriers accepted in the hold. For Iberia Regional Air Nostrum flights, the maximum dimensions permitted are 83cm x 65cm x 56cm.

  • Book well in advance. Please bear in mind that the airport staff need to know that you will be bringing a pet. Bookings must therefore be made at least 48 hours before the departure of the flight and you will need to tell us the breed of your dog or cat.

  • Before you complete your booking, please remember that pets are not allowed in the hold on flights to or from Boston (BOS), Washington (IAD), Puerto Rico (SJU), Recife (REC) or Fortaleza (FOR).

Acceptance as cargo

If for any reason your pet cannot travel with you in the cabin or hold, you can transport it as cargo…

  • If it weighs more than the permitted 45 kg (total weight of the animal plus carrier).

  • If there are legal entry restrictions for animals in the destination country or if they are only accepted as cargo.

  • If your dog/cat's breed has transport restrictions (breeds considered dangerous or snub-nosed dogs and cats).

  • If the animal does not belong to any of the species we accept.

  • If you need to send your pet on its own.

To do this, you need to contact a cargo agent like WOOF Airlines to make the arrangements and book with IAG Cargo.

Documents

Travelling with your pet within Spain

You don't need a pet passport to travel within Spain, but you do need to bring your pet's official health card.

Vaccine requirements in Spain are limited to the rabies vaccine, which is mandatory in some autonomous communities and voluntary in others. If your pet isn't vaccinated because it isn't mandatory in your place of residence, check with your vet whether the vaccination needs to be administered to travel to your destination.

Check the requirements to travel with your pet from Ceuta and Melilla.

Travelling between member states of the European Union

To travel between the different EU states, and to Andorra, Switzerland, the Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Vatican City, Iceland and Northern Ireland, which are equivalent to the European Union in terms of health, you will need to get a pet passport to travel with dogs and cats as pets. This document must state that:

  • Your pet has been identified with an implanted electronic identification system (microchip) or has a clearly legible tattoo made before July 2011.

  • Has an un up-to-date rabies vaccination.

  • If you are travelling with your dog from a country other than Finland, Ireland, Malta, Norway or Northern Ireland, you must provide proof that it has been vaccinated against tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) no more than 120 hours (5 days) and no less than 24 hours before you arrive at your destination.

The transport of animals under the age of three months requires authorisation from the health authorities of the EU member states and the animal must have a pet passport and documentation certifying that it has remained in the place of birth without any contact with wild animals. It must also be accompanied by its mother if it is still dependent on her.

Regulations on pets entering the United Kingdom

Pets are not allowed in the cabin (PETC) on flights to London-Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh. London-Gatwick Airport does not allow pets in the cabin (PETC) on any arriving or departing flights.

Neither are pets allowed in the hold (AVIH) on flights to/from any airport in the United Kingdom. However, they are authorised to travel as cargo. You will need to make the necessary arrangements through a cargo agent, who will making the booking with IAG Cargo. (You can't do this directly with IAG Cargo.)

To enter the United Kingdom (always via London), your dog must meet the requirements of the Pet Travel Scheme of the Ministry of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

If you need to transport your pet to or from the United Kingdom, contact WOOF Airlines and fly with Iberia as planned.

Regulations on pets entering the United States

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have established additional requirements for the admission of all dogs into the country, regardless of whether they are travelling in the cabin or in the hold as checked baggage. This also applies to assistance dogs. For more information, check the regulation on the official website of the (available in English only).

You must fill in this official form a few days before you travel. In the yellow box at the top of the form, you must state whether or not the dog has been in a country or region at high risk of rabies infection in the last six months. If that is the case, you will have to fill in some additional information on the form.

Once you have filled in the form, you will receive a receipt that you must show in printed or digital format at the Iberia check-in desk on the day of your flight to the United States, along with any other required documents for your dog.

If your dog has been in a high-risk area and you don't have a valid vaccination certificate issued in the United States, or an export health certificate approved by the USDA, your dog can only be admitted through one of the six airports that have CDC animal care facilities: Atlanta, Los Angeles, Washington, New York, Miami and Philadelphia. You must also pre-book your dog's stay at these facilities.

Connecting flights in the US with different airlines: If your pet is travelling in the hold, you will have to collect it at the transit airport and check it in again, paying a fee to the new airline. For pets in the cabin, you will also have to pay each airline separately.
Check the provisions of each airline that you are going to travel with and make sure that all of them confirm the acceptance of your pet.

Travelling to and from countries outside the European Union

Each country may have its own regulations regarding travelling with pets, and some of these rules can be very restrictive (vaccinations, veterinary certificates, etc.). We therefore recommend that you check the local requirements and restrictions of the country of origin, transit and destination well in advance.
You can find out more at:

  • The Embassy or Consulate.

  • The website of the country's competent ministry.

You can only enter the European Union with your pet through the authorised entry points authorised by the EU countries, where your pet will be subject to documentary and identity checks by the competent authorities (available in English only).
If you are flying to Spain, make sure that the destination airport appears on the list of airports authorised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (available in Spanish only).

Countries with restrictions on the entry of animals

Argentina: You will need to show an animal health certificate to the authorities, issued by a licensed vet, stating that your pet is disease-free and has a rabies vaccination valid for a maximum of 1 year.

Brazil: This country only allows the entry of birds that meet a series of requirements. More information.

Ireland: Animals are not allowed in the hold (AVIH) on flights from Dublin. However, they are allowed to travel as cargo.

Panama: Check all the requirements of the Panamanian authorities for the entry of dogs and cats in the country.

Qatar: Animals are not allowed in the cabin (PETC) on flights to/from Doha, only in the hold (AVIH). Only assistance dogsare authorised to travel in the cabin.

South Africa: Animals travelling in the cabin or in the hold as luggage are not allowed to enter or leave the country. They must be transported as cargo in compliance with current regulations. More information at www.gov.za (available in English only).

If you need to send your pet to or from a country with entry restrictions for animals or that only accepts pets as cargo, contact Woof Airlines.
