Despite being the third most populated city in the European Union, Madrid does not overwhelm, and quality of life is of great importance. The capital of Spain has everything that visitors from all over the world love about the country as a whole, including nature, warmth, creativity, culture, and a passion for partying. Take one of our cheap flights to Madrid and discover a beautiful, addictive city, which charms each and every one of its visitors, without being pretentious or complicated.

Visit the Prado Museum and prepare to be amazed by works of the world’s greatest painters, such as Goya, Velázquez, Titian, Rafael and El Bosco. It should not be forgotten that Madrid is home to many more prestigious museums, such as the Thyssen and the Reina Sofía. Lose track of time on a typically Madrilenian terrace in the beautiful La Latina neighbourhood and sample a variety of tapas, washed down with a glass of wine or beer. Shop at the most sophisticated boutiques that line the wide boulevards in the exclusive Salamanca district, and a fifteen-minute walk will lead you to the cosy Letras district, dotted with inviting little cafes and antique shops. The bohemian, picturesque neighbourhood of Lavapiés is a web of steep alleyways and home to a large population of Indian and African immigrants, giving it an almost Cuban feel.

The 18th century Royal Palace is an architectural masterpiece, where you can enjoy a walk through its gardens, which stretch all the way to the Manzanares river. Take a stroll along Madrid Río, a spectacular walkway through nature that runs parallel to the river for over 10 kilometres and ends at the Matadero, an impressive early 20th century Neo-Mudejar cultural centre, consisting of several warehouses, which once served as industrial slaughterhouses and the city’s livestock market. Madrid has even more to offer, as it was once known as Madrid of the Austrians, bearing witness to the Spanish Empire during the Austrian reign in the 16th and 17th century. Some of the city’s most beautiful squares include the sloped Plaza de la Cebada in La Latina, Plaza Mayor (the heart of the city, along with Puerta del Sol) and Plaza de las Comendadoras.

The city comes even more alive at night in areas such as the alternative Malasaña neighbourhood and Chueca, one of the largest LGTB-friendly districts in Europe. Relax and unwind in the beautiful Retiro Park, the largest green space in the city and meeting point for both locals and visitors, who come to embrace the warmth and free spirit that Madrid symbolises.

But Madrid doesn't end there. Several other towns in the region are home to fascinating attractions, like the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, both steeped in history and well worth a visit. In Alcalá de Henares you can follow in the footsteps of Cervantes and take a stroll around the magnificent university. And of course you can accompany every visit with a typical dish of the region and the local fine wines, all sure to delight you.

As well as the region's rich cultural heritage, you will also find a full range of sports and recreational activities to complete your trip. A stroll through the Guadarrama National Park, a cycling route along the CICLA Madrid bike lanes, a tour of wineries and vineyards, country cottages with tasting menus, reservoirs and other water areas to practise canoeing or simply cool off.
