Jerez (sherry) is the wine, Jerez de la Frontera the city, and it is a city of horses as well as wine. On the border with Granada (hence the name), it overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and is but a stone's throw from Gibraltar. Drawn by a landmarked historic centre and a rich patrimony of palaces, many arrive by motorcycle. The Jerez circuit each year brings together thousands of fans of sharp curves. Culture, competition, gastronomy and horses: there is much indeed to choose from.

Zoobotánico
Besides endangered animals, you will see exotic species and can enjoy a spectacular stroll through the Botanic Gardens.
A day of leisure.
The first inhabitants of Jerez Zoo Park, which has been open to the public in the Tempul Gardens for more than half a century, were a pair of ostriches, two cheetahs, a golden eagle and a drill monkey. In addition, the zoo had an extraordinary team of gardeners and landscapers, whose prestigious hot and cold greenhouses laid the foundations for the Botanic Gardens which is fully installed today. In the 1950s the zoo opened its doors and its exotic animal population grew, curiously due to the fact that the zoo curator's brother was a snake hunter in Africa and sent many specimens from there, many of which did not survive the climate change. Today, Zoobotánico is a leading national establishment for the conservation and breeding of endangered species, and the perfect place to enjoy a day of leisure.
Craft Souk
All kinds of traditional crafts for everyone.
Unforgetable Arab past.
To keep Jerez's Arab past alive and continue the craft tradition in the region, the Craft Souk, a centre for small manufactured works of art, was opened to the public. If you are looking for something interesting and original to take home this is the best place to go, with its local and Moroccan craftsmen offering many options. It is located in Peones Square, formerly the Carnicerías Viejas, and is framed by the 'Ma'arifa' project, which seeks to recover traditions and promote sustainable tourism in Cadiz and northern Morocco. It not only sells crafts, but also offers an exhibition space, craft workshops and even a restaurant selling typical Maghrebi and local cuisine. The crafts that you will find here include ceramic and pottery, hide and leather goods, handmade jewellery, hand bound books, fans and pressed flowers.
Zahara de los Atunes
A highly recommended getaway 90 km from Jerez: the moment of the 'levantá' is unique and indescribable.
Looking south.
If you head southbound 90 kilometres from Jerez, you will find Zahara de los Atunes, with whitewashed houses decorated with flowers on the balconies, beach bars and rebujito cocktails, making it an ideal getaway where you enjoy the outdoors and the smell of sea. The name Zahara de los Atunes (Zahara of the Tunas) dates back to the 13th century when King Sancho IV granted Guzmán el Bueno permission to fish for tuna, and the invention of the 'ambadrabas' fishing technique (with two ships and a net extended between both), which you can still see today. The best time to try your hand at this fishing phenomenon is in the spring when migrating tuna are caught. Do not miss the moment of the 'levantá', when you can watch expert fishermen raise their seafood-filled nets.
Yeguada de la Cartuja Stables
Do not leave Jerez without exploring what defines this city best: its equestrian passion.
Jerez and its horses.
If anything best defines Jerez it is the city's horses and the culture and tradition they represent. One of the best places to admire these fine specimens in the wild is the Yeguada de la Cartuja Stables. Guided tours inform visitors about the history of thoroughbred horses in Finca del Suero, where the mares run semi-free, nurse their foals and share their space with stunning stallions. Visits include an exhibition of carriages and a tour of the facilities where the horses are cared for and trained. On Saturday mornings there is a display at the Yeguada de la Cartuja Stables, where you can see for yourself why the riding schools are famous in Jerez.
Vejer de la Frontera
Travel through Andalusia's medieval past, little more than an hour away by car. An obligatory visit.
Medieval picturesque town.
A little more than an hour from Jerez by car is the picturesque medieval town of Vejer de la Frontera. It is an old town, declared a Historical and Artistic Heritage Site which still retains the charm of an ancient fortified city, with a wall that remains standing, extending over many hills, several defensive towers and monumental gateways. Your visit to Vejer de la Frontera will involve a journey back in time, with traditional whitewashed Andalusian houses, amongst which is the Marquis de Tamaron Mansion, from the late 17th century, or España Square, where you can imagine bullfights being celebrated, held here at the initiative of the Vejer knights and nobles. A walk through the cobblestoned streets will lead you to one of the last remnants of Islamic construction: the 10th century castle with stunning panoramic views.
Villamarta Theatre
The city's first theatre boasts a long history, now focusing on the performing arts. A recommended visit.
An exceptional schedule of shows.
If you are visiting Jerez and are a fan of the performing arts, do not miss the Villamarta Theatre, which has stood in the heart of the city since 1928. It was commissioned by King Alfonso XIII to the Marquis of Villamarta, who was the Mayor at that time and left the work in the hands of Basque architect Teodoro Anasagasti. The original building, a modernist aesthetic which makes references to Gaudi and even Jerez wine with its wine bottle-shaped windows on its facade, was given the honour of hosting the city's first theatre. For sixty years, its 2,000 seats were regularly full of visitors keen to watch film screenings, concerts and plays. Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, the Villamarta Theatre remains a strong cultural reference in Jerez.
Tarifa
Tarifa is a noted spot on any surfer's map: waves and good weather are guaranteed all year round.
Sun, beaches and lots of surfing.
Perhaps you fancy some sunbathing outside on the beach, a surf lesson or whale and dolphin watching by boat. You can do all this and more in Tarifa, only an hour and a half away from Jerez. Situated right at the bottom of the peninsula, with views of Africa, this is a place where the climatic conditions are favourable all year round. The beaches of Bologna and Valdevaqueros are the perfect place to spend a sunny day, but if you looking for more action you can take part in some of the surfing and windsurfing courses which take advantage of the strong wind in the area. You can even equip yourself with surfing gear and accessories in Tarifa's busiest shopping steet, Batalla del Salado.
Tabanco San Pablo
Their Spanish omelette is exquisite. 'La Nena', the loyal chef, is the reason behind it.
Flamenco left, right and centre!
In Tabanco San Pablo, situated in San Pablo Street in the heart of the flamenco district of San Miguel, you will find that flamenco lives and breathe all around you and has done ever since it opened its doors in 1934. Tío Manuel was responsible for creating the basis for the typical Andalusian tapas and sandwiches which are accompanied by a 'fino' (fine wine) from their old winery. Almost like a supersticion, the cook 'Nena' (Mari Carmen Nieves, the owner's wife) has been using the same fork for more than two decades to mix together the ingredients for her spectacular omelette, which is why the locals keep returning. Other homemade dishes that you can enjoy in the Tabanco San Pablo are seasoned potatoes, with tuna, egg, parsley and a special touch of vinegar. The sandwiches will also surprise you, with fillings such as shredded beef and cheese.
Tabanco El Pasaje Tavern
The oldest tavern in Jerez serves tapas and wine to the beat of improvised flamenco.

One of the most authentic places to visit in Jerez is the Tabanco El Pasaje in the heart of the city and only a few metres from Villamarta Theatre. A 'tabanco' is a traditional Jerez tavern which, in the late 19th century, served wine in barrel loads, along with tastings and flamenco singing. The Tabanco El Pasaje, which has two entrances on Santa María Street and Mesones Street, is the oldest in Jerez and has remained standing since 1925. Back then it was a grocery store and singing club. Its current decor is reminiscent of this time with old wine barrels that decorate a room filled with wooden tables and chairs. It is also fairly common to hear impromptu outbursts of flamenco! The meal consists of traditional and homemade hot and cold tapas, with the perfect accompaniment from their extensive wine list.

Why not relax in Jerez with some golf? Whether you are an amateur or professional or have never even touched a set of clubs, the green at Sherry Golf Jerez has room for you. It is a technical course but the most level in Spain, designed by Stirling & Martin, where there have been several national and international championships. Since 2006, its high quality has made it the official headquarters for the Second Phase qualifiers of the European PGA (European Golf Championships), so semi-professional tourists can feel like champions on this green! For this reason, do not miss their competition recipes. It is not only a refined restaurant with a romantic room and an intimate garden, which you should book in advance, but it is also loyal to local producers: the Jerez vegetable garden and Cadiz fishermen supply Sabores with seasonal products, so the menu changes throughout the year. You will also find a tapas tasting menu and a wine-pairing menu, with an exquisite blend of traditional recipes with signature touches. If you opt for the tasting menu, you can try almost all of the specialties, such as Iberian meat with apricot chutney or King Silo toast and orange marmalade.
Ruta del Toro

From Jerez de la Frontera to Algeciras.
From Jerez to Algeciras runs the A-381 road, known as the Ruta del Toro. If you are interested in the world of farming, bullfighting and all the rituals associated with this tradition, you can rent a car and take to this road (passing through surroundings such as Medina Sidonia and Alcala de los Gazules). The route runs alongside the Alcornocales Natural Park, a remarkable setting of 170,000 hectares where you can see its scenic flora and fauna or even catch a glimpse of its birds of prey. Views of ranches, such as 'Cebada Gago', 'Torrestrella' or 'Martelilla', where wild Andalusian bulls graze, extend along the Ruta del Toro. The road leads you to another municipality called Los Barrios, where bullfighting festivals are celebrated, such as the controversial 'toro embolao'.

The Cadiz convents are known for their delicious recipes and exquisite confectionary which has remained a secret inside its walls for generations. If you have a sweet-tooth and want to take home a sweet souvenir from Jerez, this is the perfect place to get one. You will also find legendary treats from the Madre de Dios Convent's nuns, on Madre de Dios Square, the Santa María de Gracia Convent and the Santa Clara Convent, on Barja Street. As the tradition goes, the confectioners' cannot speak to you, but you may buy their delicacies: such as mantecados (a sweet Christmas treat), pestiños (honey-coated fritters), 'bones of the saint', tea biscuits, butter cupcakes, tarts or almond pastries.
Reino de León Gastrobar
An unconventional mix of flavours and presentation. Their prawn muffins say it all, do they not?

Dishes such as 'prawn muffins', 'mini- tandoori-masala-skewers', 'creamy cheddar and liquorice lollipops' or 'torpedo prawns and sweet chilli' give you an idea of what you'll find in the Reino de León Gastrobar Restaurant. Unique and unconventional, this restaurant, situated on Latorre Street, has become an experimental gastronomic centre for chef José Luis Prieto Rodriguez. The classic recipes combine products from Leon and Jerez in a curious mix of flavours, all presented in an exquisite way and oriented towards gourmets who want to try exclusive dishes. In the Reino de León Gastrobar Restaurant you can find 'Jerez cabbage with green beans and squash' or 'chickpea pedrosillados with chorizo and Leon pancetta'. And make sure you leave room for dessert, amongst which you will find the 'Kabuka': an Andalusian mousse with spices and filled with hazelnuts and chocolate.
Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
Here you can enjoy the best horse shows in the city. A must-see.

Jerez horses are known to dance like true artists, trained and guided by their riders. And the best place to enjoy a show of this nature is the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, a symbol of horseback tradition where you can watch an equestrian ballet called 'How the Andalusian Horses Dance'. When you cross the wrought iron gates into the Recreo de las Cadenas and you walk into its gardens, guarded by a luxurious fountain, you will find a building called 'El Picadero' (The Riding School), which can hold up to 1,600 people. The Royal School not only offers equestrian shows, but every morning members of staff are available to talk to tourists about how they care for the horses, and how they are trained and indulged in this beautiful setting. They also discuss the craftsmen who make the saddles and restore harnesses.

The secret to the success of the La Pulpería con Acento Gallego Restaurant, on Arcos Street, is a combination of nostalgia and high quality products, fine cuisine and exquisite customer service. Forget about Andalusian traditions and flamenco for a moment while you try the flavours of the North. La Pulpería offers a culinary journey to Galicia with its authentic recipes and products such as seafood, which comes directly from the Rias Baixas every weekend. Amongst its specialties you will find delicious cod with raisins and pine nuts, pork with turnip tops, Galician broth or homemade cod or octopus croquettes. Equally don't miss the typical Galician empanada, which varies every day: from scallops or octopus, pork with cheese, loin or mussels. Any of these Galician delicacies can be ordered to go.
Santa María Port
Half an hour from Jerez you can enjoy beautiful promenades and stunning sunrises.
Costa de la Luz.
Just half an hour from Jerez you will find yourself in the heart of Costa de la Luz, and more specifically in Santa María Port, home to promenades and sunrises over the sea. Amongst the many outdoor activities available in this town is a fun evening boat ride which leaves from the Vapor de la Plaza de las Galeras pier. The trip, themed with relaxing music and a free sangria bar, is only available in summer and runs through the Guadalete River to Sherry Port, which offers the best views of the city at night. Another attractive sea in Santa María Port is called 'Vaporcito', which between 1955 and 2011 followed the century-old tradition of communicating with Cadiz by boat. Since the sinking of this motor vessel in 2011, they have been trying to restore and revive it.
Alameda Cristina Square
What began as a modest space in the Middle Ages ended up as the Site of Cultural Interest you can see today.
Red and white squares.
A boulevard of red and white tiles flanked by benches will lead you to the Alameda Cristina Square which dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time it was just a plot on the outskirts of the city, near the Jewish Quarter, where locals organised bullfights and medieval tournaments, consisting of horse riders throwing clay pots filled with ash or flowers to each other. Over time, this space became a noble area, commanded by the now-obsolete Santo Domingo Convent. Here you could also find the San Sebastian Chapel and the hospital until the 19th century when they disappeared and were replaced by the Alameda Cristina Square. It is very near the Marquis of Montana Palace, so is also protected as a Site of Cultural Interest.

Empedrada Street in Jerez's most traditional neighbourhood, San Miguel, is home to the third oldest flamenco club in the city and one of the best places to hear gypsy singing which you cannot miss on your visit: the Peña Bulería. The shows are simply to entertain tourists, but since 1977 it has been struggling to keep the essence of this art. Surely you remember the beautiful pictures and saetas sung to Christ at Easter from the Peña balcony? It made your hair stand on end. In this club, prestigious flamenco festivals such as 'De Peña en Peña' or 'Las Noches de San Telmo' are celebrated with new artists and other acclaimed performers - so if you want to experience an authentic Jerez flamenco night, do not miss this place.
La Breña y Marismas de Barbate Natural Park

Impressive views.
The extraordinary landscapes and views that you will see in the Breña y Marismas de Barbate Natural Park make it well worth the trip from Jerez down the Atlantic coast to Barbate, a distance of only 78 kilometres. In this municipality, where you can visit the Trafalgar Cape, its greatest treasure is the ecosystem itself. Barbate Natural Park spans over 5,000 hectares, of which more than 1,000 are marine. The fearsome Brena cliff rises 100 metres above the sea and is perfect for watching birds nesting in its walls. Be sure to have a look at the curious phenomenon of 'salt spray' which is caused by the crash of the waves onto the rocks, where the salt solidifies and forms a blanket. Here you will find also the 'Torre del Tajo', which was used to guard the coast in the 16th century.
Doñana National Park
Amazing palette of natural ecosystems that leaves visitors amazed, even Unesco thinks so.
Dunes, Vera, Beach, Forest, Marsh and Scrubland.
Although the province of Cadiz has part of the Doñana National Park within its boundaries, the best way to visit this extraordinary spot is through the El Rocío-Matalascanñas road, an hour and three quarters from Jerez, via the Huelva entrance. This trip is guaranteed to be worth your while. The journey to Doñana takes visitors through the Cooperativa Marismas del Rocí, where you will be seated in a multi-purpose vehicle, perfect for its six ecosystems: Dunes, Vera, Beaches, Forests, Marshes and Scrublands. It is one of the most varied and rich protected natural areas in Europe, declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. Its more than 54,000 hectares make up a mosaic of different ecosystems, perfect for nature lovers and outdoor activities with its abundant native flora and fauna.
Marquis of Montana Palace
Thanks to its Baroque façade and its delicate interior, it has been recognised as a Site of Cultural Interest.
Bourgeois palace.
The Marquis of Montana, honoured with this title in the 18th century, was commissioned to build the Marquis of Montana Palace as an example of bourgeois architecture in Jerez (later known as Domecq Palace, when it was purchased by the Montana family). To protect this historic building, which retains its imposing Baroque facade and fragile interior, the Palace was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2003 and for some years held organised tours beyond its facade. After years of foreign exploitation, the Marquis of Montana Palace has become a luxury hotel business project for local companies AltaCazuela and Bar Juanito. The rooms where Marquises once wined and dined still maintain their luxurious standards for their customers who have come to try some of the food.
Riquelme Palace
A legacy from Ponce de Leon nobles, this building shows the old medieval power struggle between families.
Plateresque glitz.
Amongst its attractions, Mercado Square in the old town, has a building which reflects the medieval power struggles between families: the Riquelme Palace. This stylish building, which belonged to the Riquelme family, was a signal of power against the rival Jerez families, such as the Ponce de Leon nobles. The palace has a Renaissance-plateresque style facade, which was unusual during the 16th century, and loomed over Mercado Square, previously reserved for the city's Arab souks, and which still retains its charm today. Riquelme Palace makes reference to ancient mythology, such as the heroism of Hercules, with its front-facing sculptures and ornaments. In the Corinthian columns on its facade, it also reflects the influences of Genoese traders who came to Cadiz by sea.
Atalaya Museums
Not only worth a visit for the Wine Museum and the Clock Museum - the gardens are also impressive.

The exhibition space of Atalaya Museums in Jerez, surrounded by lush romantic French gardens, has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. It contains not one but two museums: the Clock Museum, located in the so-called Time Palace, and the Mystery of Jerez or Wine Museum, located in an ancient wine cellar. This unusual combination of old watches and wine barrels opened in the 1970s in Atalaya and has since hosted social, cultural and artistic activities in its perfect exhibition setting. Here you will find a curious collection of watches from the 17th century as well as a media centre which analyses the Jerez wine and wine system, its evolution through history and the characteristics that set it apart from the rest.
Bullfighting Museum
Bulls, wine and tapas are the words which best sum up this ancient and reconverted winery.

From Monday to Saturday and only in the mornings, fans of bullfighting and the tradition which surrounds it can visit the Bullfighting Museum, situated on Pozo del Olivar Street and offering good wine and great tapas made with traditional products. As you would expect, it is situated in an ancient Jerez winery which has been reconverted into a museum, where there is an ever-changing collection of paintings, sculptures, posters and other objects related to bullfighting. The Bullfighting Museum also exhibits the emblems of the main herds of bulls, which for years have been marked onto the bulls. The country's best bullfighters even have their own corner exhibition in this museum, with posters and costumes.

curious characteristic of the Jerez winemakers is their passion for art and their patronage, which becomes a unique opportunity for tourists. In the Bodegas Tradición, located in Plaza Cordobeses, one of the largest collections of Spanish painting between the 15th and 19th centuries, belonging to the Joaquín Rivero Collection, can be found. There are 300 works by authors such as Goya, Velázquez, Zurbarán or Madrazo, among others, which can be seen while tasting the wines and brandies from the winery. On the other hand, the Estévez-Bodegas Real Tesoro Group offers to the public the Vollard Suite Museum, which contains some of Picasso's key works in etching, known as the 'Vollard Suite': a collection of 100 engravings that the artist made over the years. thirty. Liquid gold.
Williams & Humbert Wineries, one of the most important wineries in the world and the largest in Europe, with 100% Jerez capital, has become an essential spot to visit in the city, where you can get to know the essence of this liquid gold in the Jerez Museum. The huge facility with over 180,000 square metres and awarded the National Architecture Award, was founded in 1877 and since then has become a national and international vintage and tradition benchmark. The tour through these wineries, which were visited by European kings, writers such as Alberti and even the Beatles, includes information about the entire cultivation process, selection of the best grapes, their conversion into wine and the best selection of vintage wines. As well as a Jerez and Iberian wine tasting, horse show timetables are also offered on the premises.
Carriage Museum
7,000 square metres of museum in a former winery which will transport you back to the past.
Impressive carriages and coaches.
Amongst its many tourist activities, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art has an impressive collection of carriages and coaches in the Carriage Museum, located in the former Permartín Winery, spanning more than 7,000 square metres. It is a journey into the past, recreated in multimedia format with large screens that are intertwined with the real carriages exhibited in the collection. You will find them arranged according to their use and origin: they include Andalusian carriages, accompanied by bells and fitted covers, and English and Hungarian carriages, with frills and quirky clasps. Amongst the crown jewels of the Carriage Museum you will find an 18th century coach; a four-seater carriage with a foldable cover, perfectly preserved and fully operational in a video from the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Lugo in Seville.

Another Jerez company which displays its craft and activity centre is the Rancho Cortesano which houses the Bee and Honey Museum on Carretera Cuartillos. This company shows the beekeeping process and its therapeutic properties, and the tour includes seeing the so-called 'Honey Field', with more than 2,000 beehives at full capacity. The Bee and Honey Museum showcases various products such as royal jelly, propolis, pollen, wax, soap and cosmetics derived from this product, all available for tasting and sale in the museum shop. On your visit do not miss out on tasting their light and dark honey, winner of several awards in honey competitions and distinguished by quality labels such as 'Organic Honey' and 'Natural Park Brand '.
Wine Label Museum
An unusual museum with a picturesque collection - do not forget to book by phone.
15,000 labels!
Las Bodegas Garvey offers tourists, upon reservation by phone, a visit to the unusual and colourful collection that forms the Wine Label Museum. No less than 15,000 bottle labels from the Jerez-Xerez-Sherry from 1854-1954, and a collection of hand-painted bottles from the 19th century. The unusual collection is categorised by winery and theme: some have adverts as original as 'The best tonic for the blood: tonic wine for the sick' appearing alongside two drawings: a sickly child before and after taking a drink of wine . The Wine Label Museum also offers an interesting history of bottle print advertising, with bullfighters, kings, historical or mythical characters, including alleged recommendations from Pope Leo XIII, who appeared on the label of a 'miraculous wine'.

One of the city's most authentic and traditional neighbourhoods, San Mateo, and specifically its old Mercado Square, houses a collection which you cannot miss: the Archaeological Museum. It was launched in the sixties with funds from the Municipal Archaeological Collection, which have since been supplemented by other objects made in the later excavations of the city's sites. The Archaeological Museum is in a 18th century palace, today spanning 3,200 square metres, which takes visitors on a journey into the past. The collection showcases the long history of Jerez, from the early Palaeolithic settlements (with seniority from 600,000 to 18,000 years), to the issuance of coins and numismatic funds from the 3rd century A.D to the 19th century, through the remains of the Corinthian and Roman influence on Jerez territory.
Abastos Central Market

"Come and get your fresh fish, fruit and vegetables!" The lively stallholders of the Abastos Central Market in Jerez are happy to chat to customers at their stalls and promise fresh produce from the garden and the sea. Locals and restaurant owners also flock to this market for its fresh straight-from-the-oven bread, olives and Andalusian spices. It is located on Abastos Square, set in a 19th century Neoclassical building, constructed on the ruins of the former San Francisco Convent, and is considered to be the oldest market in Jerez. Wrought iron gates and an impressive facade with stone and stained glass windows which look over the 115 stalls have been preserved from its original architecture.

A trip not to be missed on your visit to Cadiz is the town of Medina Sidonia, just 46 kilometers from Jerez. Its charm not only lies in the pastures and forests that surround it, but in its architectural and archaeological richness which you can see on foot. In Medina Sidonia, you will find a curious Roman site from the 1st century AD with 20 meters of underground galleries that form part of the hydraulic constructions. But your archaeological adventure does not end here: the so-called 'Castle Hill', declared a Historic-Archaeological Heritage Site, will take you on another exciting journey through centuries of history, from the remains of the Bronze Age to the earliest fortifications. Here you will find three superimposed fortresses: the first a Roman castle, on which stood an Arabic fortress from the Almoravid period and later a medieval castle.

La Carbona on San Francisco de Paula Street, is recommended in the 'Bib Gourmand' category: good food suitable for all budgets. In this restaurant, located in a former Jerez winery, you will find a Menú Maridaje with Jerez wine for 32 Euros and à la carte dishes from 30 Euros. Specialities include hot and cold entrées (like salmon tartare with avocado and smoked cheese or the fragrant Navarran chistorras). This can be followed by its delicious barbequed meat, which will melt in you mouth, and washed down with a fine wine from their extensive wine cellar . The seafood menu completes the offer from a restaurant which will certainly leave you feeling pleasantly full.
La Bodeguita de Baco
This hidden gastronomic treasure serves an endless list of delicious homemade dishes at prices that will make you smile.
Jerez at its most profound.
Take a journey deep into Jerez's history, with its dishes presented in earthenware pots and bota wine bags made from authentic skin, at the end of Escuelas Street near the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art: La Bodeguita de Baco. A door which interrupts the street's old whitewashed wall is the only indicator that you have found this hidden gastronomic treasure, with homemade dishes cooked lovingly by the local family who owns the bar. To them there is no need to cover the food in sauces if the flavours are strong. Why not try their scrambled eggs with ham, 'encebollao' tuna, oxtail, Jerez cabbage, gazpacho or fried cuttlefish, all ranging in price from 6-9 Euros. The owner will even present your bill in a little notebook!
San Miguel Church
A Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance hybrid construction.
Three centuries of construction.
San Miguel Church took nearly three centuries to finish, with the first stone of its foundation dating back to around 1484. The locals were visited by the Catholic Monarchs at this time and took advantage of their visit to ask if their small 13th century chapel on the outskirts of the city could be extended. This construction resulted in what you can see today - a hybrid church in a mixture of common architectural styles through the centuries: Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and styles from 18th century reforms. Considered a National Monument in 1931, the San Miguel Church has survived several disasters: such as the destruction of its original tower in 1721 when it was hit by lightning and an earthquake in 1755. Today there are tours inside which detail its eventful existence.
San Juan de los Caballeros Church
A historical and legendary church with a cracked Gothic dome and Renaissance façade.
A mix of styles.
Legend has it that in the 13th century Alfonso X of Castile, at just 10 years old, participated in the Christian-Islamic battles of Jerez during the Reconquista. During the fighting in the city, the Christian army besieged, occupied and reconverted old mosques into churches. Whether fiction or reality, one of the six churches in the city that the King founded is the San Juan de los Caballeros Church, apparently taking its name from a letter written to the King asking for reinforcements against the Arab siege in 1285 - signed in blood by the caballeros (knights) from Jerez. Its construction took nearly three centuries, making it the oldest in the area. For this reason you will find a variety of architectural styles in this church: from its cracked Gothic dome on the facade to its Renaissance Tower.
Horno de Oro
If the fried fish already has you a little fried, try this exquisite Italian alternative. It's worth it.
Italian flavour.
If you are bored of the fried fish and want to change flavours during your visit to Jerez, the Horno de Oro, on Avenida Lola Flores, is a delicious alternative for dinner with its Italian dishes. This restaurant's specialty is its pizza which is cooked the old fashioned way in a traditional Neapolitan wood burning oven, just as the Neapolitan mammas used to do it. The managers and chefs come directly from Naples, bringing with them the best recipes: melanzane alla parmigiana (aubergine with parmesan), vitello (veal with tuna sauce and cream) and bruschettas, amongst other delicacies. You should also try their pasta dishes, rice dishes and pizza. It is worth saving your appetite to try their delicious desserts such as tiramisu, pannacotta, strawberry or cheese cake or the indescribable Nutella cake.

Lovers of literature, print books, the smell of paper and poetic sensibility are in luck. A small antique-feel bookshop recently opened in Jerez. It has also been an important move for broadening the city's cultural interest thanks to the conferences, writing workshops, literary presentations, storytelling and poetry recitals that are organised on its refreshing patio. It's name is Hojas de Bohemia Bookshop, located on Vargas Square, and well worth visiting to immerse yourself in its books where you will no doubt find some hidden treasures. Autumn festivals.
The Harvest Festivals in Jerez (also called Autumn Festivals) are held in September (well when else would you have it?!), and pay tribute to the ritual of picking grapes given that the end result is the essence of the city. This is another rare chance to see traditional costumes and decorated horses and hear gypsies singing in every corner. If anything characterises this fair - with its medieval market in the city, singing competitions and equestrian shows - it has to be the 'grape stomping', organised every year in front of the City Hall. Here the harvest masters remove their shoes, step into barrels and support each other whilst stomping relentlessly on the fruit. It is believed that this ritual comes from the Phoenician influence 3000 years ago.
Jerez Flamenco Festival

Can you imagine being part of a flamenco flashmob? This flashmob is an open invitation, through social networking sites, to an event which is celebrated in the Jerez Flamenco Festival between February and March. Here you can discover your artistic side and practice four dance steps while you mingle with local artists. The huge 'duende' festival brings the best representatives of this genre to the city, with shows which always achieve great critical and commercial success. If watching flamenco on stage is not your thing, you can also participate in workshops and intensive courses offered to flamenco lovers. Do you know the difference between the fandango, siguiriyas or farrucas? The Flamenco Festival is even a good opportunity to even learn about wine, or try your hand at flamenco singing or clapping courses.

The Horse Fair, also known as the Jerez Fair, is held in April every year when the city is adorned with flowers, frills, carriages, horsemen, flamenco dancers and horses. After Easter, it is one of the most important holidays, so if your trip coincides with these dates you can guarantee a good time! The first Jerez fairs date back to the 14th century and even earlier, when you needed royal permission to organise them, but the importance of horses dates back to medieval times and has an Arab heritage. Today the jousts and competitions are replaced by a parades-and-rebujitos party (a typical Jerez cocktail), and do not forget the fried fish! During the Horse Fair the streets are filled with Andalusian costumes and tents where you can find true flamenco dancers.

You probably associate the name Jerez with the famous Circuito de Velocidad which has been bringing in motorsports fans every year since the 1980s. If you are passionate about bikes or cars, do not miss a visit to this circuit which, since 2010, has offered guided tours to previously restricted areas like the Podium, the Press Room and Race Management Room, amongst other places. If having your picture taken at the top of the podium or taking a look around one of the pits is your dream, make it come true at the Circuito de Velocidad in Jerez. In addition, you can take a tour around the track by bus and learn more about its more than 25 years of history through a documentary and an exhibition of articles about some of the biggest names in both Formula One and motorcycling.
Historic-Artistic Centre

Surrounded by orange trees, fountains and lavish horse-drawn carriages, the buildings belonging to the Historic-Artistic Centre in Jerez are worth taking some time to marvel at. The town planning ensures you will find a wide variety of architectural structures in the centre. The Asunción Square, where city scribes formerly worked in travelling shops, is filled with Renaissance and Mudejar neoclassical buildings. Walk on top of the Great Mosque.
When you step onto the floor of the Cathedral of Jerez bear in mind that this sacred building stands on the remains of the original Great Mosque, which was where Emir Ibn Hud lost to the Christian troops during the Reconquista. The first church which replaced this mosque was el Salvador, built in the 12th century, and of which there are no remains left today. Today the Cathedral's Basilica, dating back to the 17th century, welcomes its guests with an impressive architectural mix of Gothic, Baroque and neoclassical styles showing the construction timeline. After passing through the imposing Baroque façade, you will find something interesting inside: a 1781 French organ, which was originally operated by hand but, after its restoration, can now be operated with a mechanical engine.

If you are travelling with children and are looking for something to keep them entertained, Bodegas Valdivia offers a great experience for the kids as well as some history about its famous wine. The program is called 'The Elves of Jerez ', and is especially geared to surprise the little ones with its multimedia explanation of wine cultivation, horse taming and even traditions like bullfighting. You will find it in the Jerez hamlet of Villa del Duque, located on the outskirts of the city. During the visit to Valdivia Bodegas you will also find a detailed explanation of the winemaking process in their ancient barrels. Their characteristic smell will help to take you through a journey of the senses. For adults, the price of admission includes a tasting of Jerez wines, accompanied by some Iberian products. It is recommended to contact the winery in advance to confirm availability of their guided tours.
Tío Pepe Wineries
Who doesn't know the famous Tío Pepe? Visit their wineries and enter into this strange world.

If you do not know the symbol of the Tío Pepe Wineries (bottles dressed in Andalusian costumes, hats and guitars included) it is time to pay a visit to the Jerez wineries which give it its name around the world. Their history dates back to 1835, when Manuel María González started wine production, aging techniques and exporting, with advice from his famous 'Tío Pepe' (Uncle Pepe). The first export was the sending of 10 bottles to London, thus founding the González-Byass company. Even the Queen of England at the time, Queen Elizabeth II, was interested in these wines and wanted to see their local origin in 1862. Today you can imagine royalty buying this delicious elixir from the company after a guided tour of their vineyards, the founder's original laboratory, and a wine cellar with 300 year old barrels and even 'stills' where the wines were distilled.

Can you imagine visiting unique little corners in Jerez that you didn't even know existed? How about a guided tour by bike mixed with some fine wine? This is possible with the tours organised by Bike & Wine, from which you can also hire bikes without guides to make your own way around the safe streets of the city. The guided tour lasts for two hours, with stops at every corner and museum, monuments and historic churches. Try and choose a warm day for the tour, although it does includes stops at the best tapas restaurants and wineries where you can taste the city's typical products. A gastronomy temple in Jerez is the Bar Juanito (and its subsidiary, Altacazuela), located on Pescadería Vieja Street. Here you can sample no less than 52 different tapas. Its specialty is made with artichokes, the star of the kitchen, and was awarded the National Tapas Award. Having said this, it is worth trying all of their appetizers, such as the tuna with onions, the 'papas aliñás' or shredded tongue. After the starters, you should try some of the signature Andalusian dishes, prepared following homemade recipes that have attracted loyal customers for years. Scrambled eggs, beef cheeks, noodles with prawns or Jerez cabbage, amongst other dishes. The choice will be a difficult one, so let your waiter advise you and remember to check the seasonal speciality.

Crossing Plateros Square, on Tornería Street, you will find the concept of 'souvenir' being taken to a new level in the Artesanía Viva Shop, with as many gifts as you can imagine relating to Jerez and Andalusia with their exclusive designs. Its selection changes depending on the time of year: from 'flamenco scenes' to tributes to the Jerez fair, through objects dedicated to the art of equestrian-bullfighting and, of course, the local wine culture. This is probably one of the best places to find ancient-looking tiles, a stunning collection of fans or shawls, ceramic and leather crafts, flamenco-style jewellery and decorative castanet heels. You will also find archaeological reproductions, fossils, minerals and geodes. Impressive sunsets.
If you love spectacular scenery and can spend hours watching the sun set, do not miss an excursion along the Pueblos Blancos Route which will lead you to Arcos de la Frontera, 34 km from Jerez. It was here that the locals discovered a prehistoric settlement on a hill which provided a perfect strategic position to defend the city, and has remained inhabited since. The white houses wind to the top of a rock, where you will find Cabildo Square and the Arcos Castle, of Arab origin and with a preserved courtyard where you can imagine medieval knights preparing to defend the walled city. The best panoramic views over the Jerez countryside can be found on the terraces and bars in Cabildo Square, where you can admire a stunning sunset.
Alcazar
A symbol of the city's defences from the 12th century.
Almohad architecture.
The historic walled area of Jerez still has one of its defensive systems remaining: the Alcazar, built in the 12th century and one of the few remaining examples of Almohad architecture. This fort still retains its original horseshoe gateway arch flanked by the wall, its defence towers, the old 12th century mosque which Alfonso X of Castile later converted into a church, an oil mill, the courtyard where Christian troops were trained and even a hammam (Arab baths). The journey through the lush Alcazar gardens will also lead you to the Villavicencio Palace, which was built on the ruins of an ancient Islamic palace, where you will find the curious Camera Obscura: a high tower with an optical illusion of mirrors which reflect Jerez as a moving photograph from a bird's eye view.
