Emission reduction

Goal:
net-zero
emissions by 2050

Change starts with us

Iberia, together with the IAG Group, is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, as defined in the Flightpath Net Zero plan.

As a sector, we currently depend on fossil fuels, and low-carbon solutions for aviation are more complex than for many other industries. However, we believe our ambitious goals are achievable.

We are making progress through concrete and measurable actions. At Iberia, one of the key pillars is the progressive renewal of the fleet, incorporating next-generation aircraft and improving operational efficiency, which helps reduce emissions per passenger compared to previous technologies.

Even so, we know that the transition requires additional levers. That is why the IAG Group is promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as one of the main ways to reduce emissions across the fuel life cycle. In 2024, the Group’s airlines used 162,000 tonnes of SAF, an increase of more than 200% compared to 2023.

What are net-zero emissions?

According to science and as established in the Paris Agreement, in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the increase in global average temperature should not exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. However, the global average temperature continues to rise, so it is urgent to act decisively and achieve everyone's commitment to the 2050 goal.

It is therefore urgent to contain this warming, and, in order to achieve this, emissions must reduced to as close to zero as possible. As in 2050 there will still be some residual emissions, these must be extracted from the atmosphere through natural mechanisms, such as oceans and forests, but also with the help of new technologies, which allow us to achieve the goal of net-zero emissions.

OUR
GOALS

WE STRIVE TO OFFER
MORE EFFICIENT
FLIGHTS

To meet our emission reduction targets, we have to make our flights more sustainable. In order to achieve this, we need to take certain measures such as the renewal of our aircraft, with more modern and efficient models; in-flight and ground operations that use less fuel; and strong support for the development and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Travel in more efficient planes

When you fly with us, we want to take you on planes that have the lowest possible environmental impact

WE PROMOTE THE USE
OF RENEWABLE ENERGY

Since 2019, all the electricity used in our buildings comes from renewable sources. And in 2021 we launched our self-consumption plant, which takes up the entire roof of our engine workshop in La Muñoza, which is next to the Madrid airport.

Our self-consumption plant in La Muñoza, in figures

WE HAVE
22.000 m2
of solar panels

WE GENERATE
5.4 million KW/h,
equivalent to the consumption of 1,500 households

We work to eliminate single-use plastics from our products and are committed to reusable and recyclable packaging.
