Time for some sun and sea
A key part of Athens' charm comes from its beaches. Around the city, over 60 kilometres of beaches extend across the whole region of Attica. The capital of the so-called Athenian Riviera is the popular beach of Glyfada, covering various kilometres of golden sands. Other popular beaches include Varkiza, Vouliagmeni and Lotsa, which are all just a few kilometres from the city centre. There are frequent buses from Syntagma Square to these beaches that make the short journey in just a couple of minutes. It is important to know that the government owns many of the beaches around cities in Greece and they often have an entry fee. In return, they do offer a range of services including volleyball courts and crèches.
The National Gardens

A small oasis
Not everywhere you visit in Athens has to be connected to its classical past. The National Gardens are right in the middle of the city, next to Syntagma Square. These gardens were built around the mid-19th century for Queen Amalia. This leafy corner in the middle of the busy centre was created for the city's inhabitants as a peaceful refuge. They were designed as a place to relax after a hard day's work. Today, they are still maintained for the same purpose and are an excellent place to disconnect and get away from the hectic pace of city life. They are also home to the Botanical Garden, which is open 7 days a week. When exploring the park, you'll be sure to spot a diverse range of plants and curious animals, such as peacocks and squirrels.

A volcanic lake just outside Athens
As you will know, Athens enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate, making this place a real paradise especially in the summer months. The beautiful weather has made it a regular destination for those looking to relax and disconnect. If this is your plan, there is a place that you simply have to visit: Vouliagmeni Lake. It is found about 50 metres above sea level and its origins as a volcanic crater mean that the naturally heated water is maintained at various temperatures, making it one of the most beautiful and natural spa experiences around. What's more, its breath-taking surroundings make it even more attractive. The surrounding beaches have made this a popular tourist destination, with a large number of restaurants and terrace bars to visit after each visit.
Philopappos Hill
The climb up this historic hill is well worth it, if only for the spectacular views.
The hill next to the Acropolis
A monument to Philopappos, an important Roman consul, was built at the top of this hill in the 1st century AD. This site was chosen so the statue could watch over the entire city and also be seen by all its inhabitants. Today, it is one of the main viewpoints of the city. It offers some stunning views of the Greek capital and of the famous Agora. For history fans, this hill is also home to the Byzantine church of St. Demetrio Loumbardiaris and the prison where Socrates was confined. This place is carved into the rock and has survived intact from the Classical Era to present day, a must for all those interested in Classical Greek culture. Athens is not only one of the most beautiful and amazing places you can visit but it has also been one of the most influential cities in shaping western culture since the death of Christ to present day. To introduce the port of Piraeus, we have to go back to the very beginnings of the city of Athens when the first trade routes across the Aegean Sea were developed. In addition, the Zea area (or Pasalimani), where the most luxurious boats can be found, has become one of the most attractive places in the city. The birthplace of democracy
The Ancient Agora of Classical Athens marks the heart and the origins of the city. It is found between the popular Monastiraki neighbourhood and the Acropolis. When walking around these ruins, bear in mind that you're not only seeing the very beginnings of this historic civilisation but also the birthplace of the first democracy in the world. The citizens of Athens would come to this place to debate and decide the laws and governance of the city. These forms of politics are still used today. The Dialogues of Plato, which history tells us took place at the Agora, are known all over the world and their cultural impact throughout the ages is undeniable and incalculable. During the expansion of the city, the Agora was moved to the outskirts of the city. Today, you can get there by taking metro line 1 to the Thissio station.

An ancient cemetery to complete your sightseeing tour
A visit to the Kerameikos will explain many things about Ancient Greek culture. The Kerameikos is in fact an ancient cemetery. What's more, it was the largest and most important in the whole city. It was so big that it was divided into two sections. One was inside the walls of the citadel and the other was outside these walls. For the Greeks, the rituals surrounding death and burial rites were part of everyday life and were seen on a regular basis. This explains why when visiting this cemetery, you'll also find the ruins of a thermal bath circuit and a primitive gym, dating back to the 5th century BC. The Street of Tombs, where key figures from the Greek Empire are buried, runs through the ruins of this cemetery. A journey to the heart of Greek culture.
The Areopagus
In addition to the stunning views, this hill is also a key landmark in the history of the world as we know it.
A unique piece of history at your feet
The Areopagus hill, the Ancient Agora and the Pnyx were the three courts of justice at the time of the Greek Empire. The council of elders would come here to debate and decide on the state of the city's government. People accused of blood crimes and other serious crimes against the citizens of Athens were also tried here. This hill is also said to be where the apostle Paul appeared and addressed the people of Athens. There is a commemorative plaque with the word of the apostle at the crest of the hill. This place is one of the founding elements of Greek society and makes for a beautiful walk to the outskirts of the city. From the top of the hill, you can look down on the ruins of the most influential empire on the modern world.

A must-see moment
Syntagma Square is also known as Constitution Square and is home to the Parliament of Athens. Watching over one of the Greek government's most important buildings, you'll see soldiers of the Guard standing to attention in every corner of the Square. A normal changing of the guard happens once an hour. However, the changing of the guard at 11:00 on Sunday morning is the one to see. Once a week, at this time, the Guard is relieved following the historic protocol so that this tradition is not lost to the past. This spectacular ritual is not to be missed. The Evzones, the elite ceremonial unit that make up the Guard, make their grand entrance accompanied by a live band. They're easy to spot in their colourful ceremonial costume.

This neighbourhood is right in the middle of Athens and is a kind of summary of the city. Just next to the ruins of the Kerameikos, this neighbourhood of maze-like streets has one of the best atmospheres in Athens. An abandoned gas factory with a huge red chimney acts as the heart of the neighbourhood. All basically arranged around this central point, countless bars, restaurants, art galleries, theatres and concert halls welcome a mixture of locals and tourists. After dark, the neighbourhood gets even more exciting and a lot busier. Every night the streets are packed with a young crowd, especially at weekends and in the summer. Light and colour on the Greek Islands
There are over two hundred islands divided into various groups that are dotted around Greece, just waiting to be visited. The most popular and accessible is probably the Cyclades island group and its largest island, Mykonos. If you'll be in Athens long enough to enjoy a short getaway, this island could be the perfect destination. Mykonos is a mixture of heavenly beaches, a good handful of hidden away coves and a city bathed in its own unique light. From the Church of Panagia Paraportiani to the Castro neighbourhood that looks down over the main town, this island is full of history. Mykonos city is also famous for its nightlife, which thrives in the maze-like streets down on the beachfront. There are regular flights from Athens, although it is cheaper to travel by ferry with frequent departures from the port of Piraeus.

A wild day out
Athens Zoo could be a great way to mix up a mainly history-based stay in the city. Whether traveling with the family or not, we recommend a trip to the zoo. This enormous reserve, which is home to the largest collection of birds in the world, is no ordinary zoo. What's more, you can also see all kinds of exotic animals in their native habitats. However, the star attraction is probably a journey through Greek history by way of its native animals. A different way to learn about the country through its own nature and wildlife; the kids will love it. The zoo is in Yalou, next to Spata airport, just 12 kilometres from the city centre with a continuous bus service (line 319) from Doukissis Plakentias station.

This less touristy neighbourhood will show you a different side of the city.
City life off the beaten track
Here is a great alternative plan for getting to know the city. This area is not often found on regular maps of the city; in fact, hardly anyone has ever heard of it as it slips by unnoticed in a city so full of history and monuments. However, el barrio de Kypseli has its own story to tell. This neighbourhood in the north of the city, which began life as an affluent residential area in the 1930s, has been slowly transformed by crises and immigration into what its name means today: a hive. The construction of hundreds of buildings mixing numerous architectural styles lends this amalgamation of houses its distinctive appearance. One of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in the world, you are sure to get a real feel of authentic daily life in Athens. You can also try all types of food here and buy fake copies of practically anything. This is also Athens.

A great plan for kids and adults alike
Let's briefly move away from the historical part of the city. Without discrediting its cultural side, let's just think about fun and entertainment. Especially if you're on holiday with small children, there is a plan you won't want to miss: a visit to Allou Fun Park. This attraction park is in the outskirts of the city (Kanapitseri Street). Catering for all ages and tastes, this park is a great place for pure and simple fun. The park has attractions for small children (including a crèche), water rides, land-based rides, a huge 40-metre freefall tower for the bravest of the bunch and loads of play parks and open-air terraces to eat and relax. This is a day out with a difference, mixing fun and adventure. It's not all about walking around the city!

Music to your ears
This venue has been open for over twenty years and is considered one of the best places in the world for concerts and shows. Close to Kolonaki Square, the building is easily recognisable and won't fail to catch your eye. The facade mixes classical elements, such as its enormous Doric columns that support the structure, with the modernity of its impressive glass front and walls. It is named after an ancient aqueduct built here in the times of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Inside, its four gigantic halls welcome artists from all over the world. Opera, concerts from internationally renowned symphonic orchestras, theatre and even contemporary music are all on the programme here. There are a great number of concerts on all year round. A handy tip: in the last few hours leading up to an event, the remaining tickets are massively discounted. This could be your chance to catch a world-class show.

A trip out to the Greek Islands
Crete is the largest of the islands surrounding Greece, but it is also the furthest away. Despite this, lots of people make the most of their stay in Athens to spend a few days on the island. If you can, we recommend taking the night ferry from the port of Piraeus. This way, you can sleep through the 8-hour crossing and will have the whole day to explore the island. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by endless beaches and coves of dazzling white sand. This island is home to some very important chapters of history, from the Minoan city of Rethymno to Chania and Heraklion, which were used as a refuge for prisoners and people fleeing from the surrounding countries. These streets tell the most hidden story of Greece.

A neighbourhood with a lovely history
Anafiotika has one of the most interesting histories of all the neighbourhoods in Athens. During the 19th century, King Otto brought to Athens a prestigious group of architects and builders from the Cyclades island group to build him a palace. These workers settled in Anafiotika, on the northwest slope of the Acropolis. However, homesick for their own villages and landscapes, they decided to build a new neighbourhood imitating their native islands. As a result, in the mid-19th century, this maze of white and blue houses emerged, complete with windy little streets with typical coastal paving. Its large number of gardens, viewpoints and small charming squares are all reminiscent of the Cyclades. A small enclave of peace and tranquillity within the city to take a stroll, relax and take in the city. The sunsets are stunning!

The décor is pretty spectacular, but the range of drinks on the menu will leave you speechless. A real must.
A colourful, legendary bar
Brettos Bar is one of the best evening venues in the city. Located in the historical neighbourhood of Plaka, it is over 100 years old and is the oldest distillery in Athens. It is very small, with room for no more than 30 people inside. However, thanks to its fame as a distillery, its century of business and unique decor, it has become one of the most popular evening bars. The walls are lined with gold bottles, the emblem and image of the bar. It also has a lovely terrace area where you can take a seat and try the unusual, unique drinks on the menu. Both the mixers and the cocktails are excellent but brandy is definitely the star drink at Brettos.

A day of shopping and relaxation
This place is completely different from the rest of the shopping areas in the city. It is a huge, modern shopping centre on the outskirts of the city, very close to the Olympic Stadium (which is within walking distance if you fancy working it into your day). This large centre opened in 2005 and is just inside the Maroussi neighbourhood, one of the peripheral districts of the city. The aim of this centre was to create a large modern space for fashion and business in the city, to show that Athens could also have a 21st-century golden mile and to redevelop one of the most neglected and problematic areas of the city. Today, it has managed to become the large modern centre that Athens wanted to create.

If you're passionate about literature, take a break from sightseeing and enjoy some of the best bookshops around.
A literary paradise
As all book lovers will know, this is the birthplace of classical literature. A large number of classical writers, who are still read and admired around the world, were born and lived in this city. Moving away from the more popular commercial areas, you'll find a different side to shopping in Athens. In particular, take a stroll down Panepistimiou Street where you'll find Eleftheroudakis, a bookshop spread over seven floors that is a true temple to literature. It sells a huge range of rare editions and out-of-print copies of all kinds of books. In addition, there are often pop-up stalls selling books in the surrounding streets. If you're also interested in popular music, there are lots of record stores and markets in the same area, selling vinyls and a whole host of related products. This area is known as the cultural area of Athens.

Keep on haggling!
This market might not appear in other guides to the city and it might not be one of the most popular, but it is well worth a visit. It is known as Piraeus Market. To get there, take the metro to the last stop on line 1. The streets in this area are full of stalls and street vendors working 7 days a week. This is the largest market of imitation products in Athens, selling everything you could ever want, from sunglasses to fake antiques and relics at bargain prices. As you move through the stands, you'll see goods also displayed on the floor and the whole street may seem like one big market stall. It is important to remember that, just as in other markets in the city, haggling is all part of the fun.

Take home a copy of what you liked most
It might seem cliché, but miniature copies of the things you like most in Athens are one of the best things you can take home from the city, as a gift or a souvenir. There are countless shops selling all kinds of replicas in all different colours. Thanks to the wide variety of replicas on offer, some really are great pieces of art in their own right. When looking around, you'll see that many of them have a gold label meaning they are authorised copies, made according to official standards and in exact proportion of the original. However, at any market or bazar you'll find similarly detailed, handcrafted replicas that are also very beautiful. These handcrafted treasures are often made from wood.

Some call it Dimotiky, others Kentriki Agora but it is commonly known as the Central Market. It is the oldest market in Athens. Originally held in the streets around the Acropolis, in 1875 a building was constructed especially for the traders. Today, this neoclassical building is home to the Central Market and together they are not to be missed. The market welcomes hundreds of locals every day, attracted by the best local produce in Athens. In fact, many restaurants in the city buy their ingredients here. Don’t forget to visit the restaurant before you leave, which is found on the lower level of the building. Try some genuine Greek cuisine of unbeatable quality and at a very reasonable price. You'll love it!

One of the city's main streets
Like most of the neighbourhoods in Athens, the shops and businesses here are on streets that are full of history and in buildings that form part of the city's greatest legends. Syntagma Square, also known as Constitution Square, is the epicentre of the city. A whole host of streets run off this square in all directions, including Ermou Street. This historic avenue is the most famous shopping street in Athens. Ermou Street connects Syntagma Square with the Monastiraki neighbourhood and is home to a large range of all types of shops. It is the perfect place, on the one hand, for clothes and accessories and, on the other, for presents and souvenirs from the city. If visiting Athens over Christmas, you'll see this street lined with festive lights and market stalls.

A neighbourhood just next to the Acropolis
If Athens is the classical history capital of the world, the historic neighbourhood of Plaka is the fashion and shopping capital of Athens. This ancient part of town is also known as the neighbourhood of the gods as it is so close to the Acropolis. Just a few metres from the Greek Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus, it is nestled between the neighbourhoods of Monastiraki and Anafiotika. Plaka is the oldest neighbourhood of Athens and its paved streets are home to many beautiful neoclassical buildings dating from the 19th century. We recommend losing yourself in these streets and discovering the large number of shops to be found in this historic neighbourhood. This area is home to both highly exclusive and more accessible clothes shops, in addition to a range of excellent bars and restaurants.

The historic neighbourhood of Monastiraki extends westward from the popular area of Plaka. In this charming maze of streets, classical history meets the contemporary side of the city. Despite sometimes being labelled as an extension of the Plaka district, Monastiraki has its own unique identity and has become one of the most popular market areas in Athens. The monastery of Monastiraki, after which the area is named, stands at the heart of the neighbourhood and a multitude of paved streets lined with all kinds of shops run from this central square. You'll find a mixture of clothes, shoes, antiques, books and CDs on sale in this area. One recommendation: on Sunday mornings the pazari market is held in Avissynias Square and it is always full of locals looking for all kinds of bargains.

The Kolonaki neighbourhood covers the area between Syntagma Square and Mount Lycabettus. Its name comes from a column in the middle of the area that divides it into two sections. Kolonaki has remained the most exclusive neighbourhood in Athens for decades. Many famous people, from sports stars to politicians, have houses here. The neighbourhood also has its own golden mile for those with the desire, and the means, to hit the shops. All the most famous names in clothing, accessories and fine dining can be found here. To explore this area, we recommend starting at Syntagma Square and finishing at Mount Lycabettus. This way, you'll finish with a great view of the whole city, giving you a good idea of the general layout.

From flea markets to luxury designer stores
Here are some top tips to remember when shopping in Athens. The first thing you should know is that the Greeks are a nation of traders and they are famous for their customer service. You may be offered a drink in some shops as you take a look around; however, you are then generally expected to buy something. On the other hand, a lot of the city's trade takes place at street stalls and markets. This is where you will find a huge range of traditional Greek goods. Remember that everything is negotiable here; the prices are never fixed and a deal can always be made. The shopping is divided between the Lambropoulos neighbourhood, for luxury and designer shops, and various more central areas if you want to stick to the heart of the city. For this second option, we recommend the areas of Kolonaki and Monastiraki.

A genuine Greek delicacy
Souvlaki is another famous Greek dish. At first glance, it seems rather straightforward: chunks of spiced meat served in pita (traditional Greek bread). Yet this dish has loads of hidden subtleties that make it extremely popular and delicious! You'll find it on the menu in bars and restaurants all over the city. In the Plaka district, next to the Acropolis, waiters advertising this dish are found by the dozen. For the chance to choose your own fillings, its wide availability as a takeaway option or simply for the delightful combination of succulent roasted meat with traditional Greek tzatziki, we definitely recommend trying this dish when visiting Athens.

The ritual of Greek coffee
Coffee is a delicacy in Athens. However, the coffee here is very different to the more “traditional” versions in countries like Italy or Spain. In Greece, coffee is boiled and served with the grounds; that's why in Athens they talk about sipping your coffee. There are three different types depending on how much sugar you take: skéto, metrio and gliko (from least to most sugar). Traditionally, it is drunk very slowly and the grounds are then read for a glimpse at what the future might hold. There are all sorts of hearsay about this tradition and no doubt your waiter will be quick to provide a more or less imaginative interpretation of your dregs. The rise of tourism has led to a growing number of more standard cafes but if you are keen to try an elliniko café (as it is known in Greek) there are still many traditional cafes, especially in the Kolonaki area, where this type of coffee is served.

A visit to the Acropolis often turns out to be one of the most tiring days. There is so much to see and a lot of walking to see it, and if you visit in summer the heat can also take its toll. Don't panic, help is at hand! After a tour of these famous Greek ruins, we recommend moving on to the Acropolis Museum, which is in the same area, and finishing at the bar on its top floor. This large terrace opened not long ago and offers beautiful views over the old town. The Plaka neighbourhood of flower-lined streets spreads out from under the Acropolis and is flanked by the Ancient and the Roman Agora. This historic quarter of the city extends from Syntagma Square at one end to Monastiraki Square at the other. Nestled between these two Squares, you'll find a whole host of colourful houses, narrow paved streets and a whole lot of flowers. It is also known as the taverna neighbourhood and is said to be the birthplace of these traditional Greek bars. There are dozens of tavernas to visit but we recommend Taverna Platanos, at 4 Diogenous Street, which is one of the oldest and most popular in the area. All the best traditional Greek dishes are served here. It is the perfect place for a mid-morning snack of Greek mezze (typical aperitif) washed down by a glass of ouzo (traditional liquor).

A mid-morning aperitif is a popular tradition across many European cultures, and Athens has its own unique version. From mid-morning onwards, the cafes and bars begin to fill up with customers ordering mezze and ouzo. Mezze is a selection of all kinds of small dishes. It is usually a combination of vegetables with meat, pasta, rice and fish. These little snacks are often based on traditional Greek recipes and are usually served with watered-down ouzo, a traditional Greek liquor similar to Anis. Some people say this sweet drink tastes a bit like liquorice. These delicacies are a key example of the "melting pot" nature of Greek cuisine, with its rich mix of Turkish, Italian and Greek dishes. Join the crowds in Monastiraki Square and the neighbouring streets for an authentic Athenian experience.

Put aside your idea of kebab.
The Gyro is one of the most common ways to eat meat in Greece. Surely you have seen them a lot of times. It is a roast meat arranged vertically and served in the form of strips. From here, the dishes are infinite and the type of meat too. In the restaurant, they usually serve mixed dishes with vegetables, potatoes, rice and everything you can imagine. This type of meat has a takeaway version that you surely know. They are called kebabs. Although it is thought that the origin is Turkish, in Greece they are part of the most common diet. Served in pita bread you can season it with all the ingredients you can imagine: tomato, onion, lettuce, local spices and various sauces. It is common to take it in restaurants and, even more, to ask for it in any of the street stalls scattered throughout the city. We recommend those in the Plaka neighborhood.
And for dessert… the baklavas

Grab a sweet treat from the street
Despite the ongoing debate about its actual origins, baklava has become the star dessert in Greek cuisine. It is thought to originated in ancient Mesopotamia and then been adapted by the Greeks. The basic recipe includes a mixture of all kinds of nuts held together with honey and sesame seeds. These delicious little cakes are usually eaten as a dessert or with a mid-afternoon coffee. They can be found all over the city: in restaurants, cafes and at any number of street stalls. A trip to Monastiraki Square to sample these treats sitting at one of its benches and watching the world go by is practically a rite of passage when visiting the city. A spot of baklava and people-gazing can also be enjoyed at any of the pavement cafes and restaurants in the nearby streets.

Treat yourself to a Greek aperitif
Here are a few tips for drinking in Athens. As you will know, the city can get rather hot, especially in the summer. However, its gastronomy plays in your favour. We recommend trying a glass of retsina which, dating back over 3,000 years, is one of Greece's most traditional drinks and is similar to white wine. It is traditionally enjoyed before eating, as an aperitif, and at lunches and dinners. Its name comes from the way the bottles are sealed with resin from Aleppo pine trees, which are native to the Greek mountains. Popular throughout the whole country, the region of Attica is best known for producing this drink and it is the number-one region for wine in general. There are countless places to sample the local wines but we recommend starting with the bars in the Gazi neighbourhood, which are famous for their retsina.

It is, without question, one of greatest cuisines in the world. The most famous Greek dish is moussaka, made from a mixture of vegetables, meat, cinnamon and red wine. It looks a bit like lasagne but has a completely different, delicious taste… Don't just take our word for it though! There are countless places to try amazing Greek food around the city, we recommend starting with Mitropoleos and Kidathineon Street and, if you want a more specific recommendation, try Aleka's for its traditional and highly popular moussaka (2 Thrasivoulou). It boasts a collection of over 600,000 coins, some of which date back to the 7th century BC. As you will probably already know, the Hellenistic civilisation was one of the most advanced of its time in terms of politics, economy and social organisation. In the centuries before the death of Christ, it had already developed social models that are still relevant in today's world. Think of the first democracy in the world when you visit this museum, its collection is part of the material heritage of these early governments. A visit to this museum will take you on a journey through the history of this society based around its coins.

A unique journey through time
The mansion in which the museum is found is as beautiful as the pieces on display. This enormous house, dating back to 1840, is home to a curious collection of musical instruments and the county’s history is told through the musical instruments from each period. Divided over three floors, the instruments are displayed according to their type: percussion, string and wind. A real must for all music lovers, this museum has a large range of strange and unique instruments made in ways you won't ever have seen before. You will be treated to creations such as baglamas (a Greek folk instrument made from turtle shells) or flutes made from the hide and bones of various animals. There is a strong tradition of folk music in Greece and here you can find out more about its origins and evolution. The Monastiraki metro station is right outside and, what's more, entry is free!

We already know that archaeological remains and great monuments from the classical and the golden age are a key part of any trip to Athens, but how about a trip to the Museum of Greek Folk Art for some more popular treasures from the city? This museum is divided over four different buildings: the Main Building (in Kidathineon Street, near the Plaka neighbourhood), the Tzisdaraki Mosque, the Bath House of the Winds and The House on Panos. Each site shows a different side of Greek culture from the 17th century onwards, with a special focus on the country's folk art. The Main Building is home to the largest collection: regional costumes, sets of coins and stamps, textiles, painting and banners that all form part of Greek identity. The museum paints a picture of Greek society, culture and history.

It's not all ancient ruins in Athens
Be prepared to experience the complete opposite of everything you've seen in the city. Athens is a museum in its own right, especially in terms of the country's classical past. A simple walk around the city is already a journey through time. However, the National Gallery in the heart of Athens proves that the country is definitely not stuck in the past. This is the most important place in the city for 19th- and 20th-century art, especially in terms of painting and sculpture. It is home to work by Caravaggio, Delacroix and Picasso but it perhaps saves the best till last: a collection of El Greco paintings. Enthusiasts and expert come from all over the world to see these masterpieces. It is located in the centre of the city on Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue.

Small treasures from the Cyclades
Have you heard of the Cyclades islands? They are a group of over two hundred islands belonging to Greece. Some are so small that they barely have a name, but together they offer a whole host of secrets about Greek civilisation. Most significantly, during the Neolithic era they were home to various settlements that developed a very characteristic way of making marble sculptures. The most common are a range of small figurines in female form in various flat, archaic shapes. Over 3,000 of these sculptures and works are on display at this museum, which also has Cycladic art from the Bronze Age to present day. Some of these islands served as a destination for people sent into exile and for slaves and prisoners and this is also documented. A paradise for lovers of ancient and prehistoric history, it can be found at Neophytou Douka Street, just off Syntagma Square.
The Byzantine and Christian Museum

A hidden gem
This museum might not be one of the most popular and it may not appear in all the guides to the city, yet it is home to some of Athens' most stunning secrets. Well worth a visit for the building alone, the museum is located in a spectacular Byzantine-style villa built in 1848. Within this beautiful estate, visitors will find a collection covering all types of art, from textiles to paintings and sculptures, which is divided into three different eras: before, during and after the Byzantium period. It is definitely the city's most important museum in terms of religious art. The collection also includes reconstructions of a 5th-century Christian basilica and an 11th-century Byzantium church. This large house, found at 22 Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, is not in the city centre but is easily reached by taking metro line 3 to the Evangelismos station.

A visual journey through history
This museum was opened in 1931 by Antonio Benakis in memory of his father, Emmanuel Benakis. This family began in Egypt to amass what would become an extensive collection and which led to the opening of its first museum in Alexandria. It then opened this museum in Athens, adding a range of Greek pieces to its large collection of Islamic and Byzantium art. Today, this has become one of the city's leading museums. Spread over four floors of a neoclassical mansion, which merits a visit in itself, the Benaki Museum takes visitors on a journey through a large part of global art history. Finally, and as perhaps the highlight of any visit, its collection includes two pieces by El Greco.
The Archaeological Museum of Athens
It is impossible to see everything in just one visit so here are a few recommendations.
History isn't just in the streets
Pieces of the puzzle of Athens' past are dotted like clues all over the city, both on the streets and in the museums. In this respect, the National Archaeological Museum of Athens is one of the most important in the city. Located at 44 Patission Street, next to Omonoia Square, the museum opened in the 19th century and with over 30 rooms it provides an excellent reconstruction of the city’s past, from the Neolithic Era to the Golden Age. You probably won't have time to take everything in, but we recommend seeing the bronze sculptures of Poseidon/Zeus and the Jockey of Artemision, the Akrotiri Frescoes and the gold from the Tomb of Agamemnon. The history of Greek civilisation is waiting to be explored within these four walls.
The Acropolis Museum
There are very few, if any, places with such an important collection of pieces all under one roof.
The history of the world
This is not a museum; it is a tangible reflection of the grandeur of Classical Athens. Although the Acropolis has been sacked numerous times in the past and by multiple countries, this museum is still one of the most important in the world. Until a few years ago, it was located among the spectacular ruins of the Acropolis, yet it has since been moved just a short distance away. This glass building is home to the famous bust of Alexander the Great, the original Caryatids from the Erechtheion, the Hydra Pediment and the Twelve Labours of Hercules in bas-relief. And this is just for starters. Moving through the various rooms, you will travel to, observe and learn about each stage of the city's classical past, from its heyday as a political power to the Roman invasion before and after Christ. This is truly so much more than a museum; it is a huge part of world history displayed under one roof.

Built as a symbol of Roman power, this is a monument you will not want to miss.
Pillars of power
Hadrian's Library is yet another example of the Roman Empire's unmistakeable penchant for demonstrating its hegemony and power. Forming part of Hadrian’s living legacy on the city, the library has an impressive number of columns that give an idea of its original grandeur. It was built to serve a dual purpose: on the one hand, to show the power of the emperor and, on the other, to provide a public service. As such, it was used to house the emperor's collection of books and also served as a public centre for reading and learning. Despite being one of the least preserved sites, we can still get an idea of the sheer size of this building from the enormous, nearly 10-metre-tall Corinthian columns that surround the site.
Panathenaic Stadium
An impressive structure where the first Olympic Games were held.
The birthplace of the Olympic Games
Believe it or not, this gigantic white building is made entirely from marble. It is also one of the most important places in the world in terms of sporting history. The Olympic Games was a tradition that began in Athens and this stadium was one of the first venues used for these games. Also known as Kallimármaro, it was initially built in 330 AD in wood. Positioned on the side of the hill that surrounds the site so the entire city could get a good view of the events being held, it became one of the most popular places in Athens. In 1894, it was restored and became the main site of the Olympic Games held that year. With a capacity of 70,000 people, this stadium continues to host a large number of sporting and cultural events. A visit to this site is both a visit to the birthplace of sport and of Classical Athens.
Syntagma Square
A good place to start when visiting the city, this unique changing of the guard is not to be missed.
The heart of the city
Syntagma Square is the epicentre of the city with everything stemming out from this central hub. It is also known as Constitution Square as it was home to the mass popular uprising in the 19th century that forced King Otto to approve a national constitution. The square is home to the Greek Parliament and its memorable changing of the guard. We recommend visiting the square any Sunday at 11:00 to catch this remarkable event. Next to this building is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier through which Greece joins other countries in paying homage to all fallen soldiers in any conflict. This site is guarded by Evzones soldiers wearing the traditional military uniform of this ceremonial unit of the Greek Army. The main shopping streets in Athens also run from this square, including the city’s version of the Golden Mile: Ermou Street.

Remains of the Roman invasion
The city of Athens actually has two Agorae: The Ancient Agora and the Roman Agora. Despite being relatively close to each other, these two Agorae represent two very different cities. The first is a symbol of the classical, democratic city and the second is a reminder of the Roman invasion of Athens. The Roman Agora was built by Augustus in the 2nd century AD, just a short distance away from the classical one. The Ionic columns that divided its different sections are still standing today, marking out the market area, the debating area and the public baths. At the heart of these ruins, oblivious to the passing centuries, stands the Tower of the Winds. This huge circular structure was made from marble and served as a public sun dial and then later as a chapel. The entire complex is yet another key to understanding the history of Greece.

Life on the street and in the theatre
One of the first things you'll learn about Athens when visiting the remains of its splendid past is that life was a very public affair: it was a society that worked and played on the city streets. This is why there were just as many public places dedicated to politics as there were to culture and entertainment. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a prime example of this. Built by the Roman consul Herodes Atticus around the year 174 AD, it was one of the city's most popular theatres. Located at the feet of the Acropolis, it was designed to seat 5,000 spectators and was a meeting place for residents and governors of the city. This monumental building has been beautifully restored and is currently still used for large cultural events, playing host each summer to the prestigious Athens Festival. Meeting place for ancient civilisation
Greece is famous the world over as the birthplace of democracy. All politics in the city revolved around its citizens and, in turn, all society revolved around the government. This might explain why the Theatre of Dionysus was built to seat 17,000 people! It was named quite fittingly after the god of wine and theatre. Built on the southern slope of the Acropolis, it was intended to accommodate the entire population of the city. Many popular plays and mimes were performed here, but it also saw the first performances of many world-famous Greek tragedies, including works by Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Aristophanes. It is amazing to think that plays which remain unrivalled masterpieces today were first performed at a theatre built in the 6th century.
Temple of Olympian Zeus
You'll be amazed by its enormous unfinished columns, some of which are no longer standing.
A city divided
Located in a vast green meadow, the Temple of Olympian Zeus seems even bigger in these surroundings. This staggeringly large complex took over seven centuries to build. Construction began in the 6th century BC and the work was finally finished in 132 AD under the rule of Hadrian. This emperor commissioned a statue of Zeus and another of himself, of the same size, to be positioned at each end of the temple. These statues were never finished but the Arch of Hadrian at one end of the complex was completed. This monumental gateway is nearly 20 metres high and is made from marble from Mount Pentelikon (famous for this type of stone). The arch marks the boundary between the old city, or city of Theseus, and the new city, or city of Hadrian. Today, it is a must for all visitors to the city.

Not just a symbol of the city, this is one of the most famous monuments in the world.
Monument to Athena
The Greek Parthenon is the most well-known image of Athens, it is a true symbol of the city and of the great Empire once control by this country. Built by Phidias at the time of Pericles in the 5th century BC, it is the main temple at the Acropolis. This white marble building and its columns, which are the very definition of the Doric order, pay homage to the goddess Athena and the frieze details the procession of the Panathenea festival. Raised on the ruins of an ancient Persian temple, this building has survived many trials and tribulations over time. It has been despoiled on numerous occasions; in fact, the British Empire removed many pieces from the Parthenon which, even today, have not been returned. War and natural disasters have also taken their toll on the Parthenon, however, it is still the proud icon of the city.

A trip to this monument is like traveling back in time and seeing how modern democracy began to emerge.
Breathe in the past
Part architectural masterpiece, part religious complex. Part stronghold of Classical Athens, part origins of modern society. Depending on how you look at it, the Ancient Agora is the most important monument in the whole city. Found to the west of the Monastiraki district and accessed via Adrianou Street, these ruins are the birthplace of modern democracy. This sacred place hosted countless discussions between citizens to decide the future of the city. Laws, court judgements and forms of government were all debated at the Agora. Since this was a sacred place, no criminals, women or children were allowed at these events. However, it does mark the beginnings of public spaces for public affairs. Divided into three main sections –the Seat of Government, the Sacred Complex and the Market–, it was the nerve centre of the Greek Government.
Acropolis of Athens
Famous for its architecture and history, visit the Acropolis by day and see it by night from any of the city's terrace bars and restaurants.
Visible from anywhere in the city
When you look at the Acropolis of Athens, it is amazing to think it was built during the time of Pericles, in the 5th century BC. Today it sits at the heart of Athens but back when the main construction took place under Phidias, it was intended to protect the city and so was raised at its highest point. The Acropolis is nearly 160 metres above sea level, meaning it can be seen from practically anywhere in the city. The complex is entered through a monumental gateway known as the Propylaea. Once inside, you'll find the monuments around which the history of Athens is built. The Parthenon, as the main temple at this site, is flanked by the Erechtheum and the Temple of Athena Nike, which also remind us of Greece's victory at the Battle of Salamis. These architectural remains form the very foundations of Western society.
