Everything in Nice isn't based on luxury and ostentation, so the city naturally also has a space for flea markets. Les Puces de Nice is a street market located near Vieux Port that offers visitors an enormous variety of antique objects, but that doesn't mean to say that they are any less valuable: ancient furniture; the largest variety of decorative objects; figures; crockery; kitsch paintings and even vintage clothing to give a sophisticated touch to your wardrobe. Wandering around the stalls will be like a reencounter with the past, creating an experience that will take your memories back a few decades. It's possible that you'll find some bargains here, as the prices are very popular and affordable for practically everyone. The market opens from Tuesday to Saturday. As an extra, and once you've finished your tour round the flea market, you can head along to a street named Catherine Ségurane to discover the antique shops.

This market takes place at the same area as the antique book market but with the difference being that you can only find this one on the second Saturday of each month. As its name suggests, paintings are exhibited in the market and these are elaborated by amateur artists from Nice, as well as other French cities and different countries. Literature lovers have a must-visit in this market during their trip round Nice. The marché aux livres anciens is famous in the city for two aspects: on the one hand, there are some bibliographic gems displayed on the stalls where you'll find original works, limited editions and discontinued volumes that are hard to find in other places; and on the other hand, due to the unmistakable atmosphere that you take in here, which is full of nostalgia and with a smell of used paper that good readers will be quick to recognise. This market is held every first and third Saturday of every month in the heart of the city, and on the beautiful square of Place du Palais de Justice which is surrounded by Renaissance buildings. The Marché de la Libération accommodates more than one hundred stalls where local farmers, stockbreeders and fishermen display and sell their best items from Tuesday to Sunday; real gourmet products of which some come from organic agriculture. Despite its city centre location, coming as far as here will let you enjoy a completely different atmosphere that you can experience in Vieille Ville, for example, as there are few tourists who decide to visit this enclave, which will let you see how the locals spend their day-to-day. It's a very-well kept secret. Fruit, vegetables, leafy vegetables, meat, fresh pasta, fish and other products of the region such as honey or a large variety of cheese will fully immerse you into the good gastronomy in the city.

Conjuring up nostalgia, this antique market is an institution in the city which trades every Monday, being the only day of the week that the stalls set up. Located on one of the far ends of Cours Saleya, the market seems like a door that takes you directly into the past, as you'll find all kinds of antiques and objects from other periods that have come back in fashion. This market is a real paradise for treasure hunters and bargain seekers, so practice with your best repertoire, as you'll have to do some bargaining. There are around two hundred stalls that set up on this street to sell old furniture; vinyl records; arts and crafts; decorative objects made of glass and pottery; books, stamps and an endless repertoire that you have to see. You're bound to find something to take back as a souvenir. The Marché à la Brocante is a great plan for before or after going round the main market in the area.

We are talking about the most recent museum that you can find in Nice, as it opened in June, 2014. As you would have expected, it is located in the modern Stade Allianz Riviera, and it accommodates more than 100,000 objects related to all branches of sport ranging from the 16th century to the present day. The permanent exhibitions display such curious objects such as the gloves and the shorts worn by the boxer Marcel Cerdan; the football used to dispute the 1998 World Cup Final; Olympic torches, and many other items that belonged to the French and most honoured sportspeople. What life used to be like during prehistoric Nice.
Everything in Nice isn't about contemporary expressions and avant-garde movements. Terra Amata is a prehistoric enclave discovered in 1966 by the archaeologist Henry de Lumley which stands out for being home to important remains of the paleolithic era dating back to around 400,000 B.C. The most interesting part is its location under Mont Boron, which is very close to the Mediterranean Sea, as the discovered remains suggest that these ancestors used to live in shacks built on the beach, and the remains of ash that were found indicate that they had already began to dominate fire. This is one of the oldest European discoveries in this field. Nowadays, it's possible to see a good representation of what life was like in this area back then, as well as an exhibition of some utensils that were discovered during the excavations. If you're travelling with the youngest members in the family, this will be an ideal option for an educational day out together.

Multiculturalism by country
The Museum of Asian Arts is one of those centres that stands out for its cultural background as well as the spectacular enclave in which the content is exhibited. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange and based on a geometric style which makes it extraordinary, as it is laid out in a circle, a square, and a pyramid, which is why it's no surprise that it seems to be floating over the lake where it stands. Inside the building, you'll have the opportunity to see multiple works of oriental sacred art, combining classic creations and other more contemporary ones from countries such as China, India and Cambodia. The first floor is home to a permanent exhibition on Buddhism in the form of a route that shows the ins and outs of this religion in an educational way. We have arrived at one of the most curious museums of all those you can find in Nice. Naïve art is historically characterised by some very simple shapes that reject traditional academic techniques, and particularly for the use of really bright colours. The collection which this centre accommodates is so complete that we can say, without the fear of being mistaken, that this is a unique museum in the world: its immense heritage is made up of more than six hundred works of paintings, sculptures, etchings, and illustrations that mark a tour round the evolution of this trend from the 18th century to the present day. This museum was inaugurated in 1982 thanks to an important donation by the artists Anatole and Renée Jakovsky but it also exhibits great works by geniuses such as Bauchant, Bombois, Vivin, Séraphine, Rimbert, Lefranc, Rabuzin, and Lacković. You can be sure that it won't leave you feeling indifferent.

More than two hundred works by the Malagan genius in an exceptional enclave.
In one word: obligatory
It's worth coming to visit this museum just for its name, and although it's located in the town of Antibes at less than an hour away from Nice, it would be a sin to leave the Côte d'Azur without visiting such a meaningful centre. This Picasso museum is one of the most important with regard to the figure of the great painter, as it houses more than two hundred of his works among which include paintings, etchings, sculptures, and takes you through the artist's career during his exile on French territory, and through an interesting collection of photographs and personal objects. You can still feel the talent in the atmosphere, and besides the creations by the Malagan genius, it's also possible to admire other works by Nicolas de Staël, Arman, Chillida, Debré, Klein and Modigliani, among others. The castle which is home to this museum and the views of the coast are just as spectacular, which can be enjoyed from the upper area of the stronghold. Amazing!

An extensive walk round the history of art
A Renaissance palace as a luxury headquarters, a central location, and first-class collections of art. What more can you ask for from an art gallery? The Museum of Fine Arts in Nice is also known as "Palais des Arts Jules Chéret" to pay tribute to this great painter of posters who spent the latter years of his life in the city, and the gallery and the hall accommodate an interesting retrospective of his work. Within his permanent exhibitions, it's possible to enjoy creations by important artists such as Rodin, Pierre Bonnard, Boudin, Raoul, Dufy, and Monet, as well as early Netherlandish, Norwegian and Italian painting from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Perhaps the most prominent works are by the local painter Gustav-Adolf Mossa, who is an icon of the French symbolist trend, and a real emblem of Nice, which is the city that marked his life and his vision of art from beginning to end. The best of avant-garde art
The big names in avant-garde art during the 20th century have taken up their space in this sophisticated centre in Nice, which is a symbol of different contemporary trends. Located in the Promenade des Arts, this is a must-visit for lovers of paintings and other art forms, as it's possible to see cherished works by Martyal Raysse, Lichstenstein, Arman and even Andy Warhol himself - the symbol of pop art. In their acclaimed permanent collection, there are even more recent creations by renowned geniuses like Al Weiwei and the ever fascinating Christo, as well as a whole room devoted to the figure of the great neo-dadaist Frenchman Yves Klein. This museum is also a venue for interesting temporary exhibitions within a carefully organised programme. It's quite an experience for your senses. The MAMAC has an auditorium inside the building in which cultural activities are held, as well as seminars and conferences.

A new contemporary gem
Although this building isn't very big, it's large enough to house the most important permanent collection by this great artist. Marc Chagall was quite a symbol of the avant-garde trends during the 20th century with works permanently marked by spirituality and dreams; a talent that was ahead of his time. Some of his most important creations organised in five different periods of his life are exhibited in this national museum such as the famous self-portraits, Les Arlequins, Libération, and Résurrection, but what really stands out is the series of paintings titled Message Biblique, which is made up of seventeen paintings on the subject of genesis and the creation. This series of paintings was donated by the artist in 1966, and were the definite works for establishing this centre. Surrounding the building, you'll find some exquisite gardens to walk round, and a nice terrace. Remember: to come to Nice and not discover this museum will make your visit a little less incomplete.

Henri Matisse didn't spend nearly forty years of his life in Nice for no good reason: the light, charm, and enviable atmosphere in this city are noticeably reflected in his creations, and a large part of the meaning of his work is due to these elements. This museum is a cultural paradise dedicated to an impressionist without comparison; a contemporary genius. We are talking about a centre which is priceless and intends to spread the great painter's legacy with many of his works which, incidentally, were chosen by the artist himself to make up the collection. You'll enjoy a compilation here which is made up of more than five hundred creations including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and illustrations among which some of the most famous are Ventana en Tahití and La Piscina. Besides this, the visit is also worth the effort due to the museum's beautiful surrounding gardens.

The natural, Italian-style environment is nothing short of enviable: a green area covered by hundreds of flowers designed to give off an aroma into the atmosphere and give it a mystical feeling. The colours, scent, aura; the melody of birds singing; the bright light; all these things come together to make up an incredibly beautiful enclave; and if this weren't enough, its elevated position will let you see fascinating panoramic views of the city and the sea, without the hustle and bustle of being surrounded by many other people. This place is a well-kept secret of Nice. Once you're here, it's also possible to visit the monastery which faces this garden with its vegetable garden and museum.

What's the best part? Its location in the heart of the centre, which is ideal for taking a break during your day.
A green area with a majestic look
This is one of the oldest public gardens in Nice, as it was opened in 1852. It's located in the heart of the city centre opposite the beach at one of the sides of the Promenade des Anglais. It's an ideal place for taking a short break during your tour round the city, as it's equipped with multiple benches, and plenty of shaded areas to protect you from the sun. Besides this, you'll also have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful views of the coast from either end of the gardens in which you'll find a curious merry-go-round, as well as slender sculptures and fountains, which give the gardens a majestic look. Walking or cycling round here turns into a nice and natural experience. These gardens host the annual book fair which is usually held during the month of June, as well as other cultural events such as concerts.
Parc Floral Phoenix

Straight across from the airport, this beautiful green area will put each one of your senses into action, and not just yours but your children's too because it's considered as the best park for the younger ones as they organise fun activities throughout the year. Above all, Parc Phoenix is tranquillity; to come here and take a stroll round the paths will let you find that peace you needed to disconnect from the routine, and all this while you enjoy the natural environment. The park has an area of seven hectares in which it perfectly combines the botanic garden with the zoo where you can see such different animals up close like iguanas, tarantulas, pelicans, otters, and enjoy seeing more than 2,500 species of plants. This place also accommodates a large greenhouse in which six different tropical and subtropical climates are recreated with unique species. Ideal for some relaxation.
Port Lympia - The Port of Nice

Strolling along beside the sea
A good coastal city that takes pride in itself must have a large port, and Nice wasn't going to have anything less. Port Lympia was built in 1745, and it has been one of the city's economical driving forces: not only for the transportation of goods, but also for its bustling tourist and sports activities, making it one of the most visited in the whole of France. The esplanade lets you walk as far as the large forum and lets you see how the little local boats, of which many are painted with the colours of the French flag, contrast with the luxury yachts that dock here, and needless to say in relation to the cruise ships that arrive from different parts of the Mediterranean. The smell of the sea is unmistakable. At one of the far ends, you'll find the famous Place île de Beauté, where the beautiful, and neoclassic-style church stands named Notre Dame du Port.

A central green area
This area started off as a central avenue but was completely renovated during 2013 into a very famous green area in the city. Promenade du Paillon is characterised by accommodating two kinds of landscapes with one being arboreal, and the other aquatic: the former is home to no less than 60,000 plants and bushes making this place a real urban park. This place has numerous endemic species and many others from the other five continents, which give it a note of distinction; as for the aquatic landscape, it's made up of a reflecting pool of more than three thousand square metres that you can walk round, equipped with dozens of fountains and running water that will delight the younger ones because yes, you can go into the water as it's not prohibited! Promenade du Paillon is an excellent option for relaxing after a long day of visits, as well as for peacefully strolling along while being surrounded by nature.

As if you go back in time
To arrive at the historic centre means to enter into an enclave which is marked by fantasy; a place where you'll experience real magic that makes you take part on a journey which takes you back in time. The Vieille Ville in Nice is a charming area that seems to have been moved here from another period of time: narrow streets, old large houses characterised by their red roofs, and an endless number of attractive spots that work as a perfect counterpoint with the modern part of the city. It is a medieval centre in all aspects, which is perfectly preserved. What a contrast! To walk round the historic centre will take you at least a morning, and it's prohibited not to get lost among the alleys, so you can admire their beauty. You'll also find an array of shops and restaurants, as well as some of the most traditional markets. Vieille Ville is perfectly linked to public transport and other areas of Nice, so you don't have an excuse for not letting yourself get carried away by its charm. It will be really special!

Along the coast
If we had to choose a famous avenue in Nice, we would definitely choose Promenade des Anglais, which is a symbol of the city, but not just for what it represents, as it is also the busiest avenue during the day. This maritime walk goes round a large part of the Nice coast, offering beautiful views of the sea and the beach, as well as turning visitors into the protagonist of a film setting. To walk along its eight-kilometre stretch (which ends at the airport) turns into an awesome experience, as you feel the warm sea breeze and enjoy very pleasant temperatures throughout the whole year. Some years ago, a bicycle lane was added that also allows you to pedal round here on two wheels. The north side is packed with important historical buildings, making some real balconies facing the sea, including very beautifully built luxury hotels, palaces and casinos. Are you going to miss this?
La Colline du Château

It is a place that you must visit during your visit to Nice, as it will turn into one of those images that you will always remember. To go up to the castle hill will allow you to enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the city, as well as the immense splendour of the Côte d'Azur with beautiful views that will take your breath away. The viewpoints become unbeatable places to stop at where you won't have any other concern but to watch the beautiful horizon in silence. There are two ways to arrive to this point: you can take the free lift, or you can walk up here, but you must know that there are many steps to climb, which is why the lift is always the most recommended option. Don't worry if you see many people waiting to take the lift, as the queue usually moves fairly quickly. Besides the views, you'll also find a manmade waterfall and archaeological ruins.

The Chez Acciardo menu is made up of traditional French cuisine in which taste takes precedence over any other factor where you can choose such typical dishes like foie, excellent meat stews, and beef carpaccios or escalopes. Ratatouille is undoubtedly the dish par excellence and the most well known culinary creation in Nice, so it's not surprising that its full name ratatouille niçoise obviously denotes its origin. We are talking about a recipe that perfectly combines a variety of stewed vegetables: the original composition includes courgettes, aubergine, tomato, garlic, onion, and pepper but it's also true that there are other variations in which pumpkin, potatoes, and even meat is added. It's usually served as an accompaniment with other main products such as meat or fish, and it may be served hot or cold, although the latter is the most common way, since it used to be traditionally consumed during the hot summer months. Besides its characteristic flavour, what most attracts attention about ratatouille is the contrast of colours on the dish, and the textures of the vegetables when you try them. Needless to say each restaurant offers their own touch, which is why you'll always find new varieties.
Nice Observatory
A special building designed by Garnier and Eiffel with an 18-metre long telescope.
A piece of history
Located at the top of Mont Gros at nearly four hundred metres high, this observatory is one of the largest symbols in the city. We are talking about a place that stands out due to two different aspects: on the one hand, for its distinctive construction designed by the great architect, Charles Garnier, as well as the slender dome that crowns the building was the work of Gustave Eiffel, who created the grand Parisian tower. On the other hand, this building stands out due to its scientific significance, as you'll find the 18-metre long telescope inside, which is equipped with a lens that has a diameter of 76 centimetres, and has been in use since 1887. This telescope was one of the best in the world in its day. Nowadays, it's possible to take a guided tour round Nice Observatory so that you can find out interesting curiosities in the world of astronomy for yourself, and also to admire the beautiful green areas surrounding the building.

The oldest forum in Nice built in 1773 is blessed with a great atmosphere.
Crossroads
You'll breathe in the Italian atmosphere from the four sides of this square, and not just because of the square's name that pays tribute to the head of Italian unification; it's also due to the architectural style of the close surrounding buildings. Built in 1773 according to the designs by Antoine Spinelli, we are talking about the oldest forum in Nice. This place is so historic that even the surrounding bars and terraces have had to respect certain directives regarding colours and furniture styles. The square is made up with various fountains and a huge statue of Garabaldi in the centre. As the square is situated in the very centre of various important arteries in the city, this has turned it into an intriguing crossroads. Some recent renovation work enabled the square to turn into an area which is almost exclusively for pedestrians, and an ideal place for walking. The atmosphere here is particularly attractive when night falls.

Surrounded by beautiful coloured buildings, and the nocturnal lighting is spectacular.
The heart of the city
This gigantic square is characterized by separating the historical and modern parts of Nice, which has turned into the point that divides the city where thousands of people go by every day. Built halfway through the 19th century, it's one of the main places in the city. The black and white tiled floor of the Place Masséna contrast with the bright colours of the surrounding buildings and their blinds which are finished off in warm tones. Incidentally, some of the windows of these buildings are not real, as they are painted on the wall, and this place is particularly impressive at night thanks to extraordinary lighting. To the south of the square, you can see the famous Fountain of the Sun that was inaugurated in 1956 and a statue of Apollo that measures 7 metres tall, which is guarded by another five bronze effigies of other mythological characters, such as Venus and Mercury. Spectacular!

Magnificence facing the sea
An iconic hotel in the history of Nice during the last century, this building has been an eyewitness of the city's best periods, as well as certain phases of decline which have now fortunately been overcome. Inaugurated in 1929, the Palais de la Méditerranée stands as an emblem of the art déco style in Nice, thanks to a monumental white facade, which is made out of marble: its sober and impressive lines are the entrance to a dreamlike interior. The decoration and the stained-glass windows are a real statement in good taste. Nowadays, it's a luxury hotel run by the company called Hyatt, but with the peculiarity that the terrace located on the third floor is open to the general public. To have a snack on this terrace facing the sea and enjoying the views is an unbeatable experience.
Palais Lascaris
Rooms with an extravagant and over-elaborate decoration with period furniture.
A gem of baroque art
Nice isn't an enclave that stands out due to an abundance of majestic buildings but this the exception that confirms the rule. And what an exception! The Palais Lascaris is an impressive baroque palace located in the heart of the historic centre, and it's the best representation of this style in the city: spacious and rooms with over-elaborate decoration; a stairway decorated with frescos painted in pastel colours; painted ceilings with mythological motifs, and beautiful, priceless tapestries. The interior even accommodates a chapel, and the rooms are characterized by immeasurable luxury with paintings, sculptures, and furniture that furnish them in a pompous fashion. This building was built during the 17th century, and it also accommodates a profuse collection of historical musical instruments, which came from the funds that the collector Antoine Gautier was saving throughout his life. Violas, harps, violins, clarinets, saxophones, and an endless amount of pieces that will delight anyone who appreciates good music.

Authentic cultural epicenter
An emblematic Nice building whose origins date back to the end of the 18th century; Since then it suffered a tumultuous history of fires and reforms that ended up leading to the building we know today, built in 1885 under a project by the architect Charles Garnier. For its part, the current name of Opera de Nice was received in 1902. If its amazing façade catches your eye from the outside, wait until you see the opera inside: its decoration sublimely combines the Italian essence with the best brushstrokes of the flirtatious French style, resulting in a cosmopolitan ornamentation that will leave you speechless. Don't forget to bring your camera to immortalize its painted ceiling and the famous sculptures representing muses. Eglise De Sainte Jeanne D'arc
Futuristic and art nouveau: a rare mix of styles for a church.
Original architecture
We don't know yet if you'll end up being in favour or against the building, but we can guarantee that it's really unusual, so it won't leave you feeling indifferent. The Eglise De Sainte Jeanne D'arc is a futuristic style building complemented with certain touches that recall art nouveau; an image which is very distant from what we understand as a place of worship. The eleven domes comprise three large ones and another eight smaller domes accompanied by a 64-metre tall bell tower that chimes in the shape of an Easter candle, which denotes a clear contrast between the different geometric shapes. This building was inaugurated in 1933. It was designed by the architect Jacques Droz who came up with the idea as an avant-garde creation during that time that even used rare materials like reinforced concrete which was scarce back then, and this is where its originality lies. Incidentally, people in Nice refer to it as "the Meringue" due to its characteristic white colour.
The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral
The largest Russian orthodox church outside Russia, which is quite a symbol of the city.
Contrasting with the surroundings
It turns out to be at least curious to see a church of similar characteristics in a country with such catholic tradition as France, and this isn't any kind of cathedral: we're talking about the largest Russian orthodox church outside Russia. Why was it built here? Some say that it was due to the continuous journeys that the imperial family used to do, and that it was built to pay homage to Prince Nikolai who died in this city. The construction of the church was finalised in 1912. It's not only the picturesque contrast with its surroundings that makes this church stand out, it's also due to the huge quantity of art that it stores, including works made of wood, icons and frescos brought here by Russian emigrants. The building has a noticeable Byzantine style architecture, and a large part is inspired by Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, particularly the five domes and the crosses that crown them.
Basilique Notre Dame de l’Assomption
A beautiful neo-Gothic church famous for its large rose window, and colourful stained-glass windows.
Are you ready to be surprised?
Yes, alright; the similarity between this building and the Cathedral of Notre- Dame in Paris is more than obvious, but that doesn't stop it from standing as a real symbol of Nice. In fact, this basilica is the largest in the city, and it's even bigger than the city's cathedral. Built in a neo-Gothic style, it was erected during 1868, according to the design by Louis Lenormand. The two square towers that support the facade measure 31 metres tall, and between these is a beautiful rose window that shows scenes of the Assumption of Mary (of whom it's named after). The absence of a large number of sculptures at the main entrance is curious, but the lack of funds during its construction forced it to be decorated in a much more modest fashion. The interior of the basilica stands out for its slender main nave and its eight lateral chapels, as well as its beautiful stain-glass windows which give it a majestic pose.
Cathédrale Sainte Réparate
With a baroque style, its interior beauty is what stands out the most.
The city's grand cathedral.
Located in the heart of the historic centre, the Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate (Cathedral of Saint Reparata) was completed during 1699, and is consecrated to the patron saint of Nice. This is the most important catholic cathedral in the city. As a baroque style building, the facade has three sections which accompany a slender bell tower that was added in the middle of the 18th century. It has a Latin cross ground plan, so it's not surprising that the architect, Jean André Guiberto was inspired by a Roman church for his design. The exterior could be considered as sober but don't let this fool you, as the best part is found inside the cathedral: ten beautiful baroque chapels of which marble plays the leading role; an impressive high altar, various paintings and stained-glass windows that give it a really characteristic touch of colour. You're bound to go by this cathedral many times, given its location, so go in and take a look around!
