Agenda 2030

We share the
UN's universal
sustainability principles

Achieving more sustainable aviation is a universal, collective commitment, and that is why we have joined the United Nations Global Compact 2015. Within the framework of this pact, we work to help achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the Agenda 2030, focusing especially on the following:

We collaborate with NGO Mano a Mano to transport children who require urgent medical treatment.

We transport humanitarian aid in emergency situations.

We get our clients involved with a system of donations to Unicef through Iberia.com. Thanks to these contributions we have helped vaccinate a million children in Angola, Chad and Cuba, among other projects.

We collaborate with the Spanish National Transplant Organisation to keep the chain of life going as part of the National Donation and Transplant Programme. Since 2013 we have transported over 762 organs.

Sustainable Development Goal 9 icon: Industry, innovation and infrastructure

We support various research and innovation projects both in the public and private sectors, which enable us to continue to reduce our environmental impact. Some examples are Cátedra Iberia, Hangar 51 and the AVIATOR Project.

Sustainable Development Goal 10 icon: Reduced inequalities

In 1977, a group of Iberia employees with children with special needs created Envera. Its mission is to promote social and professional inclusion of people with physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities. For more than 40 years, Envera centres have carried out work for Iberia, such as document management, washing aircraft linen and managing the inventory of aircraft part storage areas, amongst other things.

Sustainable Development Goal 12 Icon: Responsible Consumption and Production

We are moving forward in our digitalisation process to minimise the use of paper.

With the Press Reader digital service alone we save up to 640 tonnes of paper a year.

We have reduced plastic packaging in our products and we are committed to using reusable and recyclable packaging.

We have reduced 30 tonnes of plastic in VIP lounges and more than 2,000 kg on board.

We offer our customers services to pre-order menus and other products to encourage responsible consumption and load only what is essential on the plane.

We have managed to reduce food waste on board by 30%.

We lead the LIFE Zero Cabin Waste project to create a sustainable waste management model based on recycling.

We have reduced waste per passenger by 12%, which is the same as about 5,000 tonnes per year.

We seek to extend the useful life of products and donate those we do not need in order to be reused.

At the height of the pandemic, we donated more than 86,000 items to hospitals, such as cutlery sets, duvets, pillows and toiletry bags.

Sustainable Development Goal 13 Icon: Climate Action

We support the sector's ecological transition by promoting research, production and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

We have pledged that, by 2030, 10% of our flights will use sustainable fuel.

We renew our fleet to include more efficient and sustainable next-generation aircraft.

These new aircraft models reduce CO2 emissions by between 15 and 30%, are quieter and emit half the NOx than conventional models.

We are committed to renewable energies and self-consumption.

Since 2019, all the electricity used in our buildings comes from renewable sources, and in 2021 we launched our self-consumption plant in La Muñoza, with 10,000 m2 of solar panels that now generate 80 million kWh.

We have renovated 80% of our ground equipment and 17% is fully electric.

We use catalysts and other tools to reduce fuel consumption.

Ensuring the sustainability of the aviation and tourism sector requires joint strategies. All the initiatives that we carry out to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs are possible thanks to the collaboration of several stakeholders.
