More information from Costa Rica
Pure, free from artificial ingredients and full of ecotourism. It would be difficult to speak of Costa Rica without mentioning these, as it has been transformed into a nature lover’s destination par excellence, when you can make your visit a sustainable one, by enjoying its biodiversity whilst respecting the environment.
This Central American country is synonymous with adventure, happiness and friendliness, and is one of the 22 oldest democracies in the world. Possibly named after the indigenous Coquerrica tribe, or perhaps in reference to Columbus’ discovery of a ‘rich coast’ brimming with vegetation and jewel-adorned indigenous people, it is safe to say that it still lives up to its name, as it is home to 5% of the world’s biodiversity. 27 national parks and various biological and forest reserves in a particularly mountainous area have made this country worthy of its three UNESCO World Heritage sites, namely Guanacaste Volcanic Mountain Range, that of Talamanca and Cocos Island.
Now is the time to fly with Iberia to Costa Rica. You'll discover a great country seven hours behind Spain. Because of its geographical location, Costa Rica has a very pleasant climate. The tropical conditions of the mountain ranges give rise to a relatively stable climate in which the main changes are a wet season and a dry one.
If you fly with Iberia to Costa Rica you'll land at Juan Santamaría International Airport. This is the country's main airport and is located in Alajuela, 18 km west of the city of San José.
The taxi is the fastest way of getting from the airport to the city centre, although it is more expensive than using public transport. Inside Juan Santamaría International Airport there is only one taxi company, Taxis Unidos. You'll recognise it immediately because the cars are orange.
The typical dishes that you'll find in Costa Rica are beef stew, chopped vegetables seasoned with meat, tripe, aguadulce and chinchiví (both variations of sugar cane juice), chocolate and gallo pinto (Costa Rican beans and rice).
The country's official currency is the colón.
